Affliction is the second book in the Forever After series, following the antics of grim reaper Michael and his tooth fairy friend Chip, as they track down a brutal and sadistic serial killer. A book not for the faint of heart.
David Jester is a novelist and short story writer living in the North East of England. His books include the comedy, An Idiot in Love, and the gruesome horror, This Is How You Die.
He is published by Skyhorse Publishing and represented by Peter Beren.
I think I just found myself a new favorite series. As much as I enjoyed the first book, “Forever After”, this is even better and I didn’t know that it would be possible. I found interesting the way he was relating the story and oh yeah, I still liked the book from the point of view of a reaper. It was that kind of dark story, in which death is something usual, where Michael and his friend Chip are entitled to make sometimes morbid, but always funny jokes.
But something happens in the city and Michael finds himself on the tracks of a brutal serial killer which turns out to be something more than human. And the killer targets, for some reason, Michael. The way the dead bodies were described sent chills down my spine, that actually being one of the reasons why I liked it. I found interesting how the story shifted from the third person to the first, but in the middle of it was still Michael.
The killer was unexpected, I had my theories, I kind of suspected him but I thought that I might be mistaken just like it happened to Chip with the first suspect. Still, the killer was just like a snake, all charming and friendly and even fooled everyone.
The ending was tragic with another two lost lives and this time Michael was blaming himself and I have the odd feeling that this won’t be something that will fade away to soon.
This was a better book than the first. It told only one story and it went right to it's conclusion. The writing was good and I couldn't put the book down.
A serial killer is on the loose in Michael's down and out little town. He's not just killing women, he's mutilating them. Michael is so appalled that he feels it's his personal mission to find the killer. The killer takes notice and sends Michael a letter. With this, Michael and his friends deduce that he is actually a demon who takes over people and begins his murders. He's been doing this for at least centuries. It ends both well and badly for Michael - you'll understand what I mean by this when you read it. I don't want to spoil it for you.
Suffice to say it was a good book. If you've read the first and even if you only kind of liked it, I would recommend this one.
Good author in terms of making an amusing turn of phrase - he has a real talent for the written word. I'm not buying into what he considers a proper narrative though (story setup, situation, climax, etc) - I think he could benefit from a strong editor to create this, but that could just be personal preference.
Have read several David Jester books, including both Forever After books, and was captivated by both of them from beginning to end!! Can't wait for another (3rd) one to be released. Also read An Idiot In Love, The Clinic, Affliction, Little Terrors and plan to read Evil Green!
