Rainbow Panda and the Firecracker Fiasco

Rate this book
It’s the eve of the Asian New Year and all the animals are getting ready for the big occasion. They are sweeping, cleaning, planting flowers, writing on ribbons, and preparing food. Rainbow Panda looks forward to the fireworks display but wants to create his own fireworks show. He sets a plan in motion and tries to get Green and Pink Hamster to join him.

The animals know that they are not to play with matches or firecrackers, but nonetheless, continue with their plan. When Rainbow Panda starts to light matches in the woods, he sets the forest on fire and many animals must come to help put out the fire. The Dynasty Dragon’s mom comes and turns into a cloud that rains and puts out the fire. Rainbow Panda, Dynasty Dragon, and both Green and Pink Hamster are given activities to clean up after the fire. They also volunteer to do a beach clean up to show everyone that they are sorry for the fiasco they set in motion.

What a delightful way to teach young children about different cultures! Rainbow Panda and his friends are excited about the preparations for the Asian New Year. There is cleaning and decorating going on and an air of excitement all about. When the younger animals decide to have their own special fireworks show, disaster happens, but working together, all ends well and lessons are learned.

Rainbow Panda and the Firecracker Fiasco by Eileen Wacker not only teaches children about different cultures, but gives them something to think about regarding safety, consequences and working together! This is a well-written book for younger children, giving them enough information to fully understand and engage in the story and its characters! I also asked my 8 year old granddaughter to read this, wanting to know what she thought of it. She said, “I think younger kids would like this! I wish we had a panda.” Sounds like a good endorsement to me!

RAINBOW PANDA AND THE FIRECRACKER FIASCO by Eileen Wacker and illustrated by Alan M. Low is a delightful Children's books, ages 4-8 years. #6 in the Fujimini Adventure Series. Rainbow Panda loves firecrackers and has just meet Dynasty Dragon on the Island of Fujimini. He is very excited. What an adventure. A New Year celebration,a bit of disappointment for some of the characters and a fiasco. A wonderful story of Asian culture, family, friends, and adventure. A delightful adventure for both young readers and old. Beautiful illustrations and a glossary of "Chic" Asian Associations at the back. Received for an honest review from the author.

Book 6 of a series that is utilizing Chinese and Korean cultures. Great for all kids to learn more about the world and for parents of adopted children of Asian heritage to help their children understand where they come from. Moral and glossary make these books ones to hold onto.

My Review:

This is a delightful children's story revolving around the sweetest rainbow colored panda you have ever seen. He is so excited about the upcoming Asian New Year that he seems to get himself in a little bit of trouble when it comes to the tradition of lighting the firecrackers. As a homeschool mom I felt like this would be an excellent resource to teach my children all about the Asian culture and the Chinese New Year.

"Rainbow Panda and the Firecracker Fiasco" is a morals story and while it doesn't hit the reader over the head to make a point, neither is it subtle. It is more subtle imparting information about the Asian New Year and the mythology surrounding Asian dragons, which are different from European dragons (dragons play a part in the story). The writing wasn't great, it was a little pedantic, and the story was overly long for what it was trying to say. It was predictable for adults, moderately interesting for children.

Actually, only half the book is the story; the latter half is an excellent glossary of terms used in the story, and placing them where they belong in different Asian cultures. I learned some things from the glossary and found it more interesting than the story itself. The island where this story and series are set, Fujimini Island, is fictional and is a blend of Korean, Chinese and Japanese customs. The writing was more relaxed and I found it more enjoyable. If I were to use this book in my classroom, I would greatly edit and condense the story and focus on the glossary. The kids would appreciate the artwork and the cheerful, completely unrealistic colors of the animals.

So, I know kids books aren't my usual forte but I was invited to read this book on Netgalley and I have to admit that it really appealed to me. I have a soft spot for Pandas and so I decided to give it a go. It's a short read, obviously as it's aimed at the 4-8 age group and it only took about five minutes to read. If I had been reading it to a child. it would probably have taken longer as we would have lingered to admire the cute pictures and discuss the story.

It's a clever little story about Chinese New Year and the mythology surrounding Chinese Dragons and how their actions can bring luck for the following year. There's also a moral story embedded in the plot - Fire is Dangerous. Do Not Play With Matches.

The writing wasn't great. I think it could have been edited down a great deal without losing any of the plot but the accompanying pictures made up for it, as did the handy little glossary at the back of the book which explains some Chinese customs and foods - this is a great idea in a kids book.

I would definitely like to check out the rest of the series (there are 6 books in total, all based around the same community of animals) and would love to read this to my little nephews who I think would really love it.

Rainbow Panda is the 6th book in a cross-cultural series called the Fujimini Adventure Series. This is the only book I have read in the series so I can’t comment on the others, but this book is a great resource for classroom and home to learn about Chinese New Year and Asian culture in general.

The traditions and customs of Chinese New Year are introduced through the character Rainbow Panda. The young panda wants so badly to be a hero. To this end he devises a plan, knowingly ignoring the advice of Black Panda as well as his hamster sidekicks, with predictably disastrous results. The basic lesson is taught in a straight forward manner with a touch of humour and without being preachy. We learn that isn’t always easy to choose between right and wrong and that we have to take responsibility for our actions.

The book is divided into two parts; first the story and then a glossary describing some aspects of Asian culture, tradition and values. This book is a great tool for parents or educators, and more importantly, a relatable fun read for kids.

Despite the great illustrations, interesting cultural trivia, and helpful message (don't play with fire), the book as a whole was unreadable. It felt like Eileen had thrown something together on her computer the morning before printing. If the pictures had been enlarged and the words cut down by 75% she could've told the same story without boring the reader to pieces. Not to mention it was a little heavy handed in the moral department. Kids are smart enough to get the idea without you hitting them over the head with it.
My first incounter with Rainbow Panda will most certainly be my last. If my kids ask to get another from the library, I'll tell them it's against our religion.

(Thanks Netgalley for the copy.)

This is a cute book that is full of colorful pictures and great information. I LOVE all the pages of information about different items at the end! That is such a cute idea! This is a great multi-cultural book and has a great lesson as well! A great way to show kids why they should be careful with fireworks and should not play with them without an adult!

Review from my five year old son- "This book was cute! I like the panda alot!"

Absolutely loved this book. It is a very cute and quick read for children with a good moral to the story. Loved the pictures and how bright and colorful they were. The author did a great job keeping the story simple and fun, but also very entertaining.

I initially received an e-arc of this book from NetGalley. However I never got around to reading it there. But I was able to read the first few pages on amazon.com. I was not impressed.
