Max Baker: Guardian of the Ninth Sector

Rate this book
Superheroes are born in the ashes of tragedy...

Max Baker was just a typical, angst-ridden teenager trying to survive the woes of being in high school, figuring out the complexities of teenage girls, and coexisting with his dysfunctional mother. That was until the day he met a mysterious man named Donovan Reese and was told that he was the Guardian of the Ninth Sector of the universe. Now Max, along with his two best friends and an arsenal of newly acquired superpowers, must travel across the galaxy and back to prevent the dreaded Emperor Ausiris and his demon army from destroying Earth and taking over the universe.

My 11 year old son thoroughly enjoyed this book! He said it was AWESOME. My son's words "Max Baker is a Sci-fi book, and I enjoy Sci-Fi and suspense, but mostly Sci-Fi. I found it cool how he managed to get telepathy. I am excited to see what happens in the next book!"

Received a free copy through Goodreads First Reads.

I always love a good superhero story. And this one has an interesting premise, but while it seems to be written for a YA audience, the writing style and the story seem to be more for a middle school level. It reads like a Disney movie a younger audience might enjoy - but the details in Max's life would lend to more to a more mature audience. This made it a fairly quick but slightly unsatisfying read. I might give it to a younger reader if it had less references that were applicable to teenage life - which, of course, is what the hero is. It wants to be an I Am Number 4 type of book, but unfortunately didn't have the writing style to keep me wanting to come back for the next book (which there will be, if the end of the book is any indication). Maybe the author just needs to find his audience.
