The hum of a motorbike. The uproar of the crowd in the stadium. The cheering and clapping. All fell silent Just the thumping of their hearts remained and a questionwere they going to lose him?
Thanks to the makeover by her sisters friends, the nerdy Niharika entered college more confident, more attractive. She meets the sweet, shy Tanmay, and the spoilt but lovely Pia and they become best friends. And when Akshat and she began dating, life finally seemed to be falling in place.
Except that it wasn't
Tanmays success in football had begun to change him. Akshats perfection seemed like a front for something dark and sinister. And their college senior Karthik? His aggressiveness was a cover for his mysterious past. Someone Like You is a powerful and touching story of friendship, love and betrayal.

It has been a long time since I have read a book. A week or two. Even when I have my Unit Test exams tomorrow, I read Durjoy Datta/Nikita Singh's "Someone Like You". There's something interesting about these writers. The way Akshay Kumar lines up his movies at the period of 3-4 months consistently, Durjoy Datta and Nikita Singh do not fail to publish a new book every 4-5 months. Their fans would be the most satisfying fans in this country as they get to read their favorite author every time they just start missing them. :-) There's something interesting about this book too. It is not the way all the books of Durjoy Datta has published. First of all, this book is not by his own venture- Grapevine Publication but by Penguin India. He has just made his brand name more bigger. This book does not have a very shiny cover page like every book of his. This book is also missing a tag line that every title of his book carries. And the way both the authors have promoted this book is different than the way they do. And as I am done reading this book, they have also changed their writing style by leaps and bounds.
Someone Like You is the story of Niharika Singh. A girl who never thought that she is beautiful until she was in school. She didn't exist for boys and other entities whom every girls want to get an attention from. Then her sister- Simran does a whole make-over which helps Niharika to realize that she is as beautiful as every another girl whom she feels is beautiful than her. She goes to a totally new city for her college. There she meets 3 different boys- Tanmay, Karthik and Akshat. Tanmay ends up being her best friend. Karthik ends up being a mysterious guy in her life about whom she always remain confused. Akshat turns out to be her sister- Simran's ex because of which she finds weird to date him. Pia turns out to be her room-mate and lately, she also becomes her only friend in this new campus. Tanmay starts falling for Pia. Pia also starts liking him in spite of being in a long-distance relationship with Vishal. But, does the book ends with love sagas of all these characters? No!!! It has much more in it. At least 10 times more than what I have described above. I can not talk about them as I don't want any spoilers in this review. Do read the book to enjoy one of the best works in this genre of fiction.
Coming to both the authors first, I must say that Durjoy Datta is finally changing his writing style with every book and delivering something which I always wanted from him rather than the same sex saga that he used to write. His last book "Till the Last Breath" turned out to be one of my favorites and with this one, he has just matured enough. I am just excited for his next book now. As I, myself, blamed him for over-excessive use of sex in his books, his last book didn't have much of it and this one does not have the word itself, as per my memory. I am too happy to witness this change. And as usual the selection and choice of words that the writer implements in his writing is magical. Just for that, he remains to be my favorite. Coming to Nikita Singh, I didn't like her previous works much but with this one, I can easily say that she has learned quite sooner. I hope she keeps this magic alive and write such character-based stories than sex-related ones. Both of you have already given that kind of book in bulk to us (:-)), now its time to give us such soulful books like "Someone Like You".
I, generally, write the best scenes that I fall in love with while reading a book. But with this book, it's hard for me to categorize some events than others and term only them as my favorites. Right from the first word till the last, I was intrigued in the story like anything. It's good that people trusted this book and just on the pre-ordering basis, it entered the Bestseller's chart at No. 3 below Amish's Shiva Trilogy. Initially, the way Niharika gives her introduction is lovely. Even Simran is described lovingly. I fell in love with both the sisters initially itself. :-) Then the entrance of boys in Niharika's life is shown neatly without any illogical quotients as it normally happens with love stories. But this book is not just a love story. It is a purely character-based story where each person has a totally new personality, background, thoughts and approach towards life. How they end up being in a single plot is what makes a reader like me excited to turn pages.
Later, the hospital scene gave me thousands of goosebumps. The climax is as beautiful and balanced as the whole book is. The entrance of Pia in the book gives a push to the story in the first half. I.. I... I.... actually can't point such incidents anymore. The whole book is perfect. The second half is something I never guessed that the intense level would be such. Someone has said it right- Don't judge a book by its cover page. I would ask all of you to purchase it and keep it with yourself. Whenever you feel low, just pick this book up and you would lose all your tension and frustration. But this book also sends a message across that not everyone can be trusted without much experience and reason nor we should blame someone without knowing all the facts-hidden and obvious. We may never know the gray shades of some, blacks of some and whites of some. I don't know if I should even rate this book but undoubtedly, this is better than most of the book that I have read. I give it 4.75/5. Yes. Believe me. Purchase it right now. And yes, the only drawback that I can point is, no humor-filled one liners. :-( Thanks.
Its Good to read what was written though I feel like an incomplete ending or say it be a sudden ending without proper end. However the rest story was good but felt nowhere close to what was expected. And, there was one typographical mistake on some page in the second half where it was meant to be the "wasn't" but there was "was', when Niharika was plotted to be thinking of Pia after Tanmay's death.
The only thing that get me going for its end is FOOTBALL and initially the name of Bryan Adams. My love for football let me in this story for long. Friendship had also been depicted very well. But somewhere there is some incompleteness about the plot that was created. Clarity shown for protagonist in regard of her life was almost based on her own intentions rather than perspective of situation that needs to be there. However, the choice of character to web the story was so good to get them fit for it.
Moral: Learn from mistakes (as Simran did), and, let others warn of it too (which Simran did as well, but with no certainty to get the things get going for her own sister).
Mirrors remind me of things I am not, things I see other people are and things I would like to be. And also-sadly-things that I can never be.
Someone Like You – It seems I have a thing for that phrase. It is one of my favorite songs, and it is also, undoubtedly one of my favorite books. Look, I am not saying that this book is a great piece of literature – it isn’t. But sometimes, you just need to sit back, relax, and read a book, just to seek pleasure. Because if you read this book with a critic’s mind, you’ll do just that – criticize. And you’ll find many points to back you up. But for once, if you decide to read just for the sheer pleasure of it, to enjoy yourself, to marvel at life, to take yourself on a nostalgic trip, to make you want to cuddle in bed, then – Read this book. It was absolutely adorable yet heartbreaking, and I enjoyed every moment.
A week before starting college as a freshman, Niharika Singh visits her sister in Delhi. She has never been much beauty-conscious, but now that she is going to college, her sister Simran insists on a makeover. With newfound confidence in herself and her looks, Niharika also attracts Akshat Verma, a filthy rich guy, who is ever the gentleman. His perfect looks and demeanor instantly gets her and they go on a few dates. But this relationship is short-lived as she soon discovers Akshat had dated Simran.
Once in college, Niharika meets Tanmay, a cute, nerdy guy and they hit it off instantly. Her roommate Pia also enters the team, and they become an inseparable trio. There is also this mysterious guy Karthik, who is the college’s heartthrob. Niharika finds herself intrigued by him, but she knows better than to go by looks, thanks to Akshat. A stalker who insists he’s changed for good, a guy who seems to be more than his looks, a roommate struggling to maintain a long-distance relationship, a guy friend who’s changing by the day – Niharika does have a story to tell.
The book is written in a simple, lucid prose, which suits the story surprisingly well. Durjoy and Nikita have a great coordination, and you simply cannot NOT notice the way they have blended both their voices as one. There wasn’t a moment to be bored. The plot is fast-paced, but it did take some time to gear up in the beginning.
There is love of all kinds – sibling-love, family-love, friendship, insta-love and a splash of romance. There is joy and elation. There is heartbreak and grief. And the best part is that the authors make sure you feel them all along with the characters.
Also – the characters. I really loved Niharika, the protagonist. She is innocent, sweet and naïve. I could relate to her on many levels. Some might find her to be flat and blunt, but for me her character was perfectly well-defined. Akshat, Tanmay, Karthik, Simran, Pia – each and every one of them were developed in such a realistic way that I wondered if it was a true story. But no, it is all fiction – all the more reason to compliment the authors for the great job they did.
The climax, even if I was forewarned, even if this was a reread, made me cry – again. It isn’t suspenseful or anything, but the whole book is like a feel-good Bollywood movie – of the best kind. The romance is there – but it isn’t cheesy. The guy is villainy – but not tough. The girl is innocent – but not stupid. Everything is just in the exact place.
Overall, if you are looking for a good contemporary read, pick this one next time. I’m sure it wouldn’t disappoint. The characters were remarkable and will stay with me for life. The plot wasn’t all that extraordinary, but good enough to be cherished. For smiles, cuddles, tears and all things warm 5/5 stars for sure.
Ok this one...is at rock bottom...a story which doesn't make sense....has been written for the sake of writing...is inconsistent and self obsessed...I picked up because the very same author have penned some heart touching stuff (which is a feat if you are an Indian author)...but this one is just toooooooo shallow...give is a PASS
This is probably the worst book I have ever read in my entire 18 year old life. Where to start Girl gets a makeover Meets a guy Guy gets obsessed with her. Girl breaks up with him Moves to her college Meets another guy Immediately hates him Guy2 falls in love with her, just like that. Guy1 follows her through state to state. Girl Doesn't not think of guy 1 as a stalker. And goes on a date with him
That's it . I can't even write more without wanting to burn that book. Seriously?! What's wrong with you, niharika? And guy2 why did you fall in love with a girl like her. I really really don't recommend this book. And this is my opinion and i hate this book and hoped that it didn't exist.
Most inconclusive and predictable book I have read in a long time. Bits and parts of college life and Niharika's stay in Delhi make u feel interested in the book but the story gets monotonous and boring. You wait for things to happen but they don't. I expected something or other would happen in the end but the people potrayed as "villians" are left to karma to decide their fate. Worst conclusion that could've been given to the somewhat interesting story spoils it.
Note: Since i used the template which i generally use in my blog, the review could make you feel as if i am talking with my blog (Dont mis judge me as a dolt :D)
May 18th 2013,
Blog, it's one of those days at office when i had nothing to do, literally nothing, yet had to look busy to avoid the long stare which i would get from my manager when he sees me idle. But thanks to Amazon developers who created Kindle for desktop application, having it on my PC helped me kill time. Blog, you see i created this new theory at office that "Its better to kill your time in productive way by reading a book rather than stare at the cieling or keep a timer for loo breaks each day and try to better my own record or the weirdest, listen to hindi songs and try to translate the lyrics into english". So Blog, to sum up i was looking for a book which could help me overcome my boredom and thats when i saw "Someone Like you" on Amazon for mere 1$. I looked at the cieling again after looking at the price, thought for a second about how i would waste 1$ if i had no Kindle on my machine. The answers i got from my already bored brain were
a) Would have bought a burger at Burger King.
b) Would have send it to my Savings and feel proud of it for the whole day for doing something worthwhile for my future and end up spending 100$ by throwing a party.
c) Would start a business like the one which Rajnikanth did in Shivaji using 1Rupee and turning it in billions and billions (Imagine me with $ in eyes. Thats a scenic narrative epitome used by "Bollywood Directors" to symbolize villain/hero day dreaming about earning money)
All the above were trashed by me once i saw my manager giving me a "This guy is so idle..Gotto hook him up with some work" look.
Coming to the book blog, its an interesting tale about a girl, Niharika, who is crushed between her being in Love or Finding love dramas in both her phases, first being her not so good looking(read ugly*) Jessy from Jessy jaisi koi nahi phase where she is crushed by trying to find love while avoiding society and social life (Tell me Blog, isn't it weird that social life and finding love go so well together but social life and being in love doesn't. Almost all my friends who have just fell in love are trying to find a place away from society and social life just to romance..All they need is a secluded place with no one around and they can start..If you get what i am saying? Kinky..yeah?) and second being her Being Beautiful(Read Hot*) phase where she is crushed between two guys and their love for her.
Apparently blog, according to recent stats(I just created this Stat to sound more authoritative and informative. Shrewd genius i am you see) girls are the most confused souls on this planet earth and Durjoy and Nikita indirectly second my stats by this book( See diary how i intelligently included both the authors in my con. Cunning. Hehahaha.. Is Con se kaun bachega?). Niharika, the Jessy turned Jessica Simpson(Read fugly turned freaking hot) is also from the same batch on whom the above mentioned stats were conducted. Someone like you is Niharika's life summed up based on her relationships. Diary, if you consider Niharika as hot, you gotto read the author narrate Pia, Niharika's roomate at ICE, the narration could even turn on a blind man as well ( I am exaggerating). Niharika, Pia and Tanmay are three besties at ICE(Like those Har Ek Friend Zaroori hotha hai types of fraaandhips). Niharika and Pia have a pleasant life at ICE with their randon girly talks at night, every one hitting on them at morning and they hitting on every other hot male at afternoon. Tanmay has his horny moments(Read happy. Wanted to create interest for "those readers" as well who look for such stuff in books) playing football at evening and hanging out with his be-sties at college stairs doing random college stuff now and then.
On a serious note blog, the characterization of these three people have been well established by the author, yet it lacked the flow one would expect from Durjoy. The hospital portion of the book was well established and also Karthik's character( Niharikas crush at college) was also very well cleverly put through. The intial portion of the book about Niharikas makeover and she visiting her sister would give a wrong opinion about the book to the readers and would be taken away if i were the editor of it.
Over all the confused yet cute protagonist, the sporty football freak friend, the hot yet sensitive roommate, the pre climax hospital drama which could give a tamil director run for his money and the emotional romantic climax which would give karan johar a bon**, this book is a ready to be bollywoodifed book and would be loved by those readers who like Kuch Kuch hotha hai kinda movies with 3 idiots kinda background. Since i like both those movies, i kinda liked the book. I would rate it 3.75/5
So yes this was another book from the Durjoy Dutta club and it was bought just due to that reason as I was collecting all 10 Durjoy work. But this doesn't seem like his work yes it's enjoyable and light but it's looking more and more that Durjoy is being used like James Patterson who co-author's most of his books now a days and it's always difficult to know who contributed where.
Well coming to the book it's story of Niharika who was an ugly duckling but due a makeover by her sister turns into a beautiful swan and with that the story begins as boys and relationships enter the picture. The story moves ahead with ease at some places and jerked at others. Like my friend wrote in his review this looks filmy that that is no bad thing. After all a young other would get inspiration from one place or other and it's not conscious as pop culture has influenced our life in a big way.
Niharika gets admission in an Engineering college in Nagpur and along with her friends Pia and Tanmay get through life and she has to chose between a seemingly perfect Akshat and rough but magnetic Karthik. Well the blurb promises Friendship, Love and Betrayal and you get all but most of all you get tragedy. That is what makes it kinda different as not everyone gets a happy ending and last few pages are very emotional :(
Worth a read as its a small book and can be finished very quickly.
People who don't read generally ask me my reasons for reading. Simply put I just love reading and so to that end I have made it my motto to just Keep on Reading. I love to read everything except for Self Help books but even those once in a while. I read almost all the genre but YA, Fantasy, Biographies are the most. My favorite series is, of course, Harry Potter but then there are many more books that I just adore. I have bookcases filled with books which are waiting to be read so can't stay and spend more time in this review, so remember I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading.
This book was something different I can say. But i was just a bit of disappointed just by one thing is there is no existence where it seems Durjoy is writing something.
Otherwise the book was damn awesome to read. But I find that the first few pages till the makeover of Niharika and her sister and all that stuff was completely useless and boring.
Love you Durjoy always for such awesome writing. N yes Nikita too she is the best co-author of Durjoy as If its not forever its not love is one of my favourite.
The story is good time pass if you have nothing else to do. i just completed it in one night and two hours in the morning. the story reveals the love life of a girl named Niharika who is hanging between two boys and unable to decide which one she loves. the friendship of three friends has been shown so well that i had tears in my eyes. i would definitely advise you to read it once if you are real Durjoy and Nikita fan.
A Book which has always been my favourite and which I would read for a Zillion more times with no regrets.
Someone like you apt for the title reminded me, parts of myself in certain places. Which made me more comfortable to accept all my flaws and still be happy.
It's all about a girl - Niharika ,who plays the lead character. She from being a low-self esteemed girl to building her confidence through the days. From figuring out what is right and wrong. And in search of a Perfect boyfriend whom she puts under the Three minute love check. I will not be a spoiler, So stopping here to let you figure out urself whether she got her merely perfect boyfriend or Maybe ended worse.
It's not just that it also deals with Love, Family ,Friendship ,Pain and Regrets.
It's a must read book from my opinion, Which I adored for every sentence that it holds. So give it a go without a second thought.
Okay so do u ever have those moments when someone asks you how u find this and u r like... How DO i Actually find it?!. That's what I'm feelinn rn. I was like.. okay what is even going on in this book. Meh. I mean as soon as i really get into a scene, start feelin it. The author decides to put some twist and ruin it. There is so much happenin that it isn't slow. It's way too fast and not descriptive.
I like the book and the superb writing style of the author. The story flows smoothly and it grips you as you advance further. All characters Niharika, Tanmay, Akshat, Karthik, Simran & Pia are nicely depicted and the story line is good. A nice read.
this is the recent release by durjoy datta and the 6th book i have read which is written by him. the tile of the book is very simple and nice. nothing like the funny oxymoron titles he gives to his book. well, i would prefer "of course i love you...till i find someone better" or "oh yes i am single... and so is my girlfriend". but someone like you also worked fine with me. the cover-page is oh-so-boring!!
the book is about three friends and there life together in hostel of an engineering college. Niharika is a typical nerd whose motto in life has been to excel in her studies and enter IIT, making her parents proud. she misses IIT but joins ICE in nagpur. she is forced to go through a makeover by her sister before she joins her college so that she is the best looking girls on the campus. she meets Tanmay while on the station looking for a taxi and they become best friends since then. Niharika is belongs to a typical middle class family for which having a 15 year old esteem car is a luxury. therefore when she meets her roommate Pia, its like she has entered a fairy tale. Pia is a spoilt rich girl. but very sweet and down to earth all the same. the three become best friends. life changes when Akshat decides to come back in Niharika's life and makes her life difficult. Niharika is stuck between Akshat, who her sister has warned her to stay away from and Karthik, who's cockiness drives Niharika mad.
the story revolves around these two guys who hate to see each other. there is lot of emotions in the book. it covers the usual college stuff like the crush, the first time drinking and proposing to a girl, the college football team, the ragging, the college brawl etc etc.
the book seemed extremely boring in the first half. it hardly holds you attention. the story starts getting interesting when Karthik enters the scenario. he is the strong character in the book. the narration is in first person which did not appeal to me in the beginning but i got used to it later.
the book overall is a enjoyable read. but not durjoy datta'a best. after reading so many of his book i am now waiting to be surprised. i would therefore give it a three stars. and probably take a break from his writings!! go ahead and read it. but be patient. story picks up grip only from halfway through. cheers!!
This book is my favorite. I fell in love with the second I started reading it. The characters were creatively shaped with each other's life. Yes, it was just an another college story, but this story has a lot to say. It's different how I kept on thinking about those characters whole day since I have finished reading it or rather I should say that I still think about it. It's different how I felt when I was heading towards the end of the book. It was an awesome feeling.
Friendship, Love, hatred, lust and what not. One should definitely pick this read for the best weekend experience.
This novel mostly revolves around the lives of five people, involving love, friendship, misunderstandings, and betrayal. The main character, Niharika Singh, is the girl next door. Most female readers may find a lot in common with her. She considers herself ugly and feels lost in a crowd. Soon Simran, her sister, gives Niharika a makeover, which changes everything. Someone Like You beautifully portrays the transformation seen in Niharika when she realizes that even she has the right to feel beautiful. She sets off on a new journey when she enrolls herself in a college. Niharika makes new friends, Tanmay, Akshat, and Karthik, in the new city. Tanmay goes on to become her best friend. Her interaction with Akshat is a little complex considering he was her sister's ex-boyfriend. Niharika has feelings for Karthik, whose nature remains a mystery to her, which is resolved later when she finds out that he fakes his actions to cover up his past. Someone Like You further describes Niharika's roommate, Pia, who's also a good friend and is in a long-term relationship with Vishal. But Tanmay begins to like her and Pia reciprocates. The friendship between Niharika and Akshat also gradually develop feelings for each other, which they are not sure of. Afterward something happens in their life which left them dumbstruck and totally shattered. I must suggest this book to every everyone. The story is really sweet, interesting and elegant. The writing style is intriguing and effective which can leave a deep impression on writer's heart. A must read.
It’s a light read. That’s the thing I liked the most. You can read it quickly, like if you are having some time traveling back in the office cab or college bus perhaps. The plot and narration is simple, as is the English. It’s romantic but not to the point of being mushy or sickly sweet. The events seem understandable in the order, though sudden at times. And the cover design is quite simple as well. But that being said, it seems filmy. Literally. I know we as authors are influenced by other authors and movies, but I could see some scenes right out of movies, and a line or two that’s quite similar to the dialogue in them. I didn’t like that part. There is nothing very “new” in the plot, we know or probably expect what will happen at the end. Neither here nor there, 2.5 to 3 at most for me.
In times when I am running out of money to fetch a Sparks' or a thick read..which I usually prefer, I choose the young writers like these two (reluctantly). But, unlike every other book by Durjoy and Nikita, this one was simple and loving. The novel holds your interest till the end as you struggle to predict what's next. Yeah it had it's part of flaws too but I ignore it for the company it gave me.
P.S. Durjoy Dutta, you look damn cute in the pic at the back cover! :D
I had very great expectations from durjoy and nikita after reading their last venture "If it's not forever...it's not love".But i got very disappointed.Story is slow and nothing new in it.About half of the book i don't even realize that even durjoy has write anything.I can't see touch of durjoy in last i show some action from him and his writing style.end is not easy to digest.over all the book is far below from durjoy datta's standard.
I totally liked this book and this is the first book I have read authored by nikita singh. the book was moving and the language is simple as well.i thoroughly enjoyed the themes of friendship and love...can't skip the positiveness in niharika, the confusion between frienship and love and the feeling of sisterhood...I know I have I missed alot more.but these are major feelings that pops up into my mind.
Clearly, Durjoy has not done the writing part because the standard of English is much better compared to his other books. The story is smooth and chirpy until the death of one of the characters is brought in. It is a pity that the writers have to kill a character every time they want the readers' attention and sympathy. Apart from that, it is clichéd and is tailor made for Indian audience...
it is like these 'new gen movies' ... u watch them, njoy them n forget them... this books has it all...love, fun, comedy, tragedy, excitement , enthusiasm, thrill... i loved this because those 3 days passed really fast when i held this in my hands.
It was a try to move towards a not so cliched story but still it did not have much power. At times i felt like things were rushing in the books and there was no end to the confusion of the lead character about her feelings for the guys.
It's been really long since I chose a love story to read as I find the general plot to be more or less recurring in most of the books. So I was quite skeptical when I sat with this, But with few pages into reading it I knew I would love this.It is one of those fast paced feel good kind of books.
