About the author

Khagendranath Mitra (Bengali: খগেন্দ্রনাথ মিত্র) (1896–1978) was a writer for children of Bengal.[1] Even today his writings continue to be popular among children and preteens.

He was the first Indian children's writer whose books were translated into foreign languages. The Russian translation of Bhombol Sardar was of immense popularity. Bhombol Sardar was one of the Rapid Text in Russian junior classes.

Mitra, besides writing more than 100 books, was an editor as well. Kishor [কিশোর] (The Preteens), the first child periodical in Asia[citation needed] was the brain child of his, though it was not published for a year. Notun Manush [নতুন মানুষ] (New Man), Chhotoder Mohol [ছোটদের মহল] (The Gallery for Children), Banshory [বাঁশরী] (The Flute), Sonar Kathi [সোনার কাঠি] (The Golden Stick), Shishusathi [শিশুসাথী] (The Children's Friend; Annual) were among the periodicals he edited.

ফস্কে গেলো টাটানগর!🥺

ছোটবেলায় আমার হাতে গোনা কয়েকটা বই ছিলো। সেগুলোই স্কুল থেকে ফিরে বারবার পড়তাম ঘুরে ফিরে। এই যেমন সুকুমার সমগ্র, উপেন্দ্রকিশোর রচনাবলি, জাফর ইকবাল এর কিছু কিশোর উপন্যাস... এই তো! এগুলোর মধ্যে একটা ছিলো ভোম্বল সর্দার.... বাড়িতে কবে কে কিনেছে বলতে পারি না। ঝুরঝুরে হলুদ পাতার বয়ঃভারে ন্যূব্জ একটা বই, ধরতে হতো কি যে যত্ন করে!!! ভিতরে কী সুন্দর সব সবুজ কালির ছবি। এতো সাবলীল বর্ণনা গ্রামবাংলা আর ভোম্বলের, খুব চেনা কারো কথা শুনছি বলে মনে হয় পড়লে।

ভোম্বল ডানপিটে এক কিশোর। বাড়ি ছেড়ে পথে বেরিয়ে পড়ে কোলকাতা গিয়ে কারখানার বিরাট কারিগর হবে, দমাদম হাতুড়ি পিটে বড় রেলগাড়ি গড়বে বলে। তারপর পাতায় পাতায় সে কী অ্যাডভেঞ্চার!
- কামার বাড়ির গাছ থেকে লেবু চুরি, মানিকপুরের ছেলেদের সাথে যুদ্ধ, পাঠশালার গল্প, পদ্মদিদির শ্বশুরবাড়ি, সারদকালে গ্রামবাংলায় না‌ইওর যাবার গল্প, পথে পাওয়া এক স্নেহময়ী দিদিমা...!
আমার ভীষণ আপন এই বইটা!

আহ! হারিয়ে যাওয়া শৈশব! আরাধ্য শৈশব! চিরকালের গ্রাম বাংলার সোনায় মুড়ানো শৈশব-কৈশোর! যেমনটি কাটিয়েছি তার অর্ধেক, আর যেমনটি আরধ্য, কল্পিত ছিল বাকি অর্ধেক খগেন্দ্রনাথ মিত্র এ বইয়ে কলমের তুলিতে এঁকেছেন। প্রকৃতির অপার মমতাময় রূপ, মানুষের সম্পর্কের মাধুর্য সবটুকু আবেদন নিয়ে হাজির এ বইয়ে।
