The author of this book is amazing. Her book is about something I have never heard about. Jennifer Blaney made her book unique and special. The book started off with a young lady named Brianna. She was a special. She would help the dead move on to Heaven. It was really hard on Brianna when it was a little child that needed her help. Seeing them die so young. In her journey of finding more about her gift that was given to her. Brianna found her powers getting stronger. She found friends, love, and family. A Special's Love held many emotions in me. I cried then the next thing I was smiling and then crying again. A very touching story. I was disappointed when the GD word was used in such a kind hearted story.
Thank you, Jennifer Blaney, for allowing me to join you on this Special's journey.
I received a copy from the author for an honest review. When Brianna is approached by her spirit guide Michael to go to a home to help his mother heal, she meets her soul mate Kyle from the moment their eyes meet. Brianna is a Special. She’s someone that allows those that have passed on to pass on a message to their family before they go to the other side. When Kyle and Brianna get together, she finds she has more gifts than before. But when his ex-girlfriend doesn’t want to let him go, she creates problems for them. This story is left open at the end for a sequel. This is the first novel by Ms. Blaney and she is sure to be seen around more.
Wow this book really touches you in a way that most books can't even begin! It has everything laughter, tears, anger, love, happiness, crazy chicks, and GHOSTS!! This is going to be a great series and I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next! So hurry go get it! See what is means to be SPECIAL
I received this free book from a read to review group and was not compensated in any way for my honest opinion.
Let me preface my review by stating that I really, really dislike leaving negative reviews. Really. I wanted to like this one more. As an author, I appreciate difficulties of the creative process vs. the editing process, how much time it takes to became I strong writer. I also know how much authors want others to love their work, but need honest opinions. It's a fine line to walk. Every positive review sends me over the moon, while every negative one still bruises me a bit. Though I do my best to learn from each one. Often a well-written negative review is worth ten positive ones.
This is my attempt to be worth gold to this author who was kind enough to allow me to read her work for free.
PROS:
1) She has a good grasp of basic plot points and building of story tension.
2) A unique name for her psychic powers
3) A good attempt to create likable, mildly flawed characters within the real world.
4) An enticing cover- strong human elements with a nice ethereal glow to hint at the subject matter.
5) An interesting twist on the title "A Special's Love" vs. "A Special Love". Don't think I didn't notice. :o)
CONS:
1) First Chapter starts off in first person past tense, remaining chapters 2-30 are third person present tense-- though this doesn't technically break any rules (because there are very few rules in creative writing) it's incredibly jarring to the reader. I was all WTH? and had to stop and get back into the flow again. Completely unnecessary switch.
2) Initially, she refers to Brianna and her female family members as 'specials' then in later chapters they are 'SPECIALS' then back again to 'specials'. Hmm... continuation problem. Which is it? Unless 'SPECIALS' is an acronym for something, or you just have to make the word especially special, then you should use 'Special' and stick with that.
3) Numerous grammar errors throughout every chapter. Following examples are not intended to embarrass, but to assist the author in locating and correcting said errors.
--He sighed and said “thank you, black is fine.” Should be -"He sighed and said, "Thank you, black is fine." (the comma before black technically should either be a period or a semi-colon, but normal people speak faster than that, so in this case a comma works great.
--Here goes nothing Brianna thought to herself. Should be either, 'Here goes nothing,' Brianna thought to herself. Or Here goes nothing, Brianna thought to herself. (italics would be in book) or if you really want to be high speed, low drag--Here goes nothing, Brianna thought. (the herself is implied... where else would she be thinking it?)
--Slater was shocked. “I have been working on this case trying to bring peace to this family and bring their son home dead or alive. Should be-- Slater was shocked. "I have been working on this case, trying to bring peace to this family and bring their son home, dead or alive." (Or ...bring their son home-dead or alive.")
--Wiping tears from her eyes “Maxwell says that he wants Should be--Wiping tears from her eyes, she said, "Maxwell says that he wants[...]" Or if you want to get less wordy... "Wiping tears away, she said, "Maxwell says he wants [...] --Because where else would tears be coming from (and that first part is a fragment) and you can eliminate 80% of that/just/had/was/were/has... etc. These are words of passive writing not active.
5)Numerous cliches- 'hot and bothered', 'pale as a ghost', 'men in white jackets' (which was used several times), these are just the few I wrote down.
6) Redundancy, wordiness, grammar error and telling not showing - "Brianna noticed Kyle was back in the room. She was trying to see if everything was okay she got a feeling that it wasn’t. "Everything okay?” Should be either a semi-colon or a period between 'okay' and 'she'
Above example shows all four- redundancy- We're told Brianna notices Kyle and is trying to see if everything is okay. Then we're told this again when Brianna asks if everything is okay.
Wordiness- Brianna notices Kyle is back in the room. So many words when author could've just said Kyle was back in the room.
Telling not showing- Again, we're told what's happening, but not shown any of the character's reactions or emotions. This makes it almost impossible for readers to connect to the characters. It also makes the scene set up boring.
Rewrite example-- Wringing his hands, Kyle walked into the room. Brianna set aside her book and sat up straight. "Is everything okay?" she asked.
This is an example of showing not telling in active voice without redundancy. Showing Kyle's tension and Brianna's immediate sense that something was not okay, prompting her to ask her question. It eliminates all of the above problems and sets up a tense scene while also engaging the reader with a hook of 'what's wrong?"
second scene rewrite--Wringing his hands, Kyle walked into the room. Brianna glanced up from her book, then continued reading. "What's wrong now?" she asked.
See and feel the difference of the second showing set up? And all without extra dialogue tags of 'she said halfheartedly' 'she said anxiously'.
7) Head hopping- Several scenes jump back and forth between relating one character's emotions/thoughts, then the next paragraph relates a different character's emotions/thoughts. Yet this is third person limited, not third person omniscient. In third person limited, you have to stick with one character's emotions/thoughts, their POV, at a time unless you make specific scene or chapter switches. It can get very confusing for the reader to flip back and forth without warning.
I can go on, but the upshot is this author has a talent for storytelling and I hope she continues writing. I also hope she takes some more creative writing classes, or reads several serious books on the subject, gains better editors and... oh yeah... keeps writing. It's known that an author's first million words aren't good. Their second million are so-so to decent. Their third million are getting good to really good to maybe even great.
So you've got to keep writing and learning and writing and learning. :o)
Thank you for allowing me to read your book, and I hope my intensive (and probably painful to read) review helps you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I am always willing to discuss writing with authors and readers.
Do you want a book with ghosts? Do you want a book with a "special" powered Heroin? Do you want true love and Kismet? Do you want a twisted ex-girlfriend antagonist? If this is the book your wanting to read then I have the perfect book for you. This story is amazing. The visuals are vivid, the story is fluid and flows directly to your imagination. Jennifer Blaney is a new author who hops onto the scene with a fantastic new book. You will want to read it. You will fall in love with the story of: love, loss, soul mates, and special powers. Would I recommend it? YES! go get this book !
A Special’s Love by Jennifer Blaney is an awesome book! It has an amazing story that I couldn't get enough of and made me want to read more.
Brianna is a beautiful young woman who has a gift of sensing spirits that has already passed but hasn't crossed over yet. She is a SPECIAL. The spirits come to her when they need her to send a message to a loved one or help them with something that they were not able to do when they were alive. She helps the families heal so the spirits can cross over.
Michael was a cute boy around the age of ten to thirteen years old when he passed away. He went to Brianna for help and asked her to give a message to his parents. This is when she realizes that Michael is her spirit guide.
Kyle is a handsome young man and is also Michael’s uncle. He met Brianna for the first time when she shows up at his sister Jane’s house. When Kyle and Brianna first looked at each other, they both had a feeling that there is some kind of a connection but they don’t know what it is yet.
Brianna, Kyle and Michael’s journey together has just begun. Brianna finds the connection that she and Kyle have. Throughout the book, Brianna and Kyle’s love for each other grows more and more. Their love is amazing and they are great together. For Michael, he will always be a part of their lives and will be there to help Brianna heal the families of the spirits.
I had a lot of different emotions while I was reading this book. I felt sadness for the families with the loss of a loved one and lots of happiness for the love that Brianna and Kyle have for each other.
Jennifer Blaney has done an amazing job. I am looking forward to reading the second book to A Special’s Love and her future books.
Brianna O'Connor is very Special yes she is. At first i wasn't so sure if i would like this book but I did. It was very on going and from mid chapter one it pulled me in and kept my attention. I love being surprised by books like that. Ok now let me start with my review of the book.
With Brianna's Special abilites she accomplished all when she found her soul mate through her spirit guide while on a Special Call. So know there is Brianna, Michael, Jenna, Kyle, and Brianna's mother who was also Special and her Grandmother who was Special. I Love the idea of that generations starting with them kinds abilities and then they just grew stronger as generations passed by and none of them realized what was going on. Well when Brianna found Kyle and started having new abilities pop up and emotions was alot stronger than the other Special. So later on Brianna and Kyle learned she is even more Special than anyone realize she could be. And thats when she realize people was out to stop her and kyle from being together. but aslong as they are together nothing can come in between them.
I think this is a really good book. I give Jennifer Blaney 5 stars. And i think everyone that is into this type of Special book should read it. Great Job Jennifer Blaney.
I really enjoyed the concept of this story. It was very original and I loved the characters. They were realistic without being stereotypical, and were characters I cared about. I think this author has a lot of potential as a writer and I look forward to reading more of her work.
One thing that did bother me about this book, was the style of writing. It's more like a person telling another person what happened, than a narrator telling a story. It's almost as though someone were listing a series of events which can be hard to get invested in. I also thought it would be more realistic if, in the conversations, the characters talked in a smoother manner. There were quite a few times when words were written out instead of shortened, as a real person would talk. Such as, "they are" instead of "they're", "are not" instead of "aren't", etc.
Definitely worth the read. Original with unique plot and interesting, realistic characters.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This review is from: A Special's Love (The Special's Series) (Kindle Edition) I received this book from the Author, Jennifer. It is well written and flows smoothly. The story line is like a combination of Ghost Whisperer and Charmed, both shows I loved. I am only giving this 4 stars because of this. Bri helps people who have died finish their earthly business so they can cross over. The twist is the love between Bri and Kyle. They meet through the interference of Bri's spirit guide, Michael. The only obstacle to their union is Kyle's former girlfriend. Turns out she was sent to keep Bri and Kyle apart and will do anything to end their love. Bri quickly becomes pregnant and all sorts of things change. New powers, Kyle and Bri's connection let them feel each other's pain. Kyle must leave for a meeting and Bri goes into labor. In his rush to get back to her, Kyle is in an accident. Will he survive? Cute little story, wondering what will happen next.
This was an amazing book. Probably one of the best I've read so far this year. The storyline is fantastic! A family of women with different special powers, an evil ex, and spirits always make for a good read!
I read this book in 1 night because I just couldn't let it go. Rarely do I burn the midnight oil anymore.
The only thing I can say is I hope book 2 is already written because I don't know how long I can wait! The cliffhanger at the end was just too much! I need to know what happens now!! LOL!!
This book was received from the author in exchange for honest literary review.
Brianna has been special all of her life. Poseessing her ability to communicate with the dead kinda leads you far away from normal. Add to that a mother that can heal and a grandmother that can see the future and that is the everyday existence of her life. Once her spirit guide Michael shows up her life goes from strange to wonderfully complicated. She meets Kyle who quickly becomes everything her heart seeks in a man. Kyle seems to be definitely her betterhalf, but with him come baggage that could costs them both their lives and more..... Wow! What a great story. I was totally drawn in from the beginning in this one. Brianna is humble yet strong. A great leading character, with a supporting cast of great well developed personalities. I do have to say I have some serious animosity for Nicki as well. What a HATER!!! The plot is very fast paced and takes you for several twists and turns. It wraps up well, with the exception of the way it ends...I will say you get very upset when it end. Thank goodness book 2 will be out soon!!!! Editing was superb as well. I list this as a definite recommended read for ages 16+ and a series that has definite promise for an exciting future.
I liked this one. At first I thought this story would be mostly about falling in love and how to end up with that loved one person together. But it was different. And now I think I liked that.
The story about soul mates is allways appealing. It was something new to me to read about spirits and how special works with them. It was interesting and even touching sometimes. The characters were nice. I loved Michael, he was so fun and amazing. Actually I think I liked all the family of Brianna and Kyle.
But at the same time I must admit while reading I got a feeling what story was told in a little bit too straightforward way sometimes. It seemed as if simply telling who did what, said what, thought what and felt what in few words or sentences. There were parts where it was told how a character felt and after that he/she says how he/she felt allmost in the same words. I was left wishing it was told in a more subtle way, not just simply telling what happens but giving an opportunity to taste a sentence and understand what meaning it carries. I guess what I'm saying is to say more by saying less.
Anyway, I have a feeling this story has a potential to grow. And I would love to see what happens next in the story.
I was given this book in exchange for honest review (Lovers of Paranormal).
Firstly I did enjoy the read an easy an short story. A lot like Ghost Whisperer the TV series. I had two minds to this story, it was like their were two authors. One part of the story I liked very much it flowed well however when came to eating it seemed to lack depth like it was hurried along till it got back on track with the exciting part of the book. I will however be looking out for the second book.
Loved this book! It was such a sweet story with so much emotion. And I just love Brianna and Kyle! There were goosebumps and tears (good one's!)It grabbed my attention immediately and did not let go! Good job Jennifer! Can't wait for book 2!
After reading the synopsis I thought….why not… let me give this one a try, even though the cover did not appeal to me at all. That’s very unusual for me, I am, yes, I hate to say it, am a cover lover, if I don’t like/love the cover I probably won’t read the book. I know …that it’s bad and I have to change, I will work on it. However if the stories are going to be like this one, I just might not change. My initial interest in this book was because of the idea of the spirits that needed help to cross over and the soul mate tid-bit that was thrown in the synopsis. I’m a sucker for soul mate stories.
The over all idea of the story was great. Brianna comes from a family of….special females. One is a seer of the future the other gives off/puts of good vibes and the thirds is just coming into her powers. She helps spirits finish their unfinished business so they can cross over, and once she finds her true soul mate she will have more powers. With other things happening throughout the story, such as dealing with a crazy ex girlfriend makes the story unique. However, the surge of pleasure I had of reading this story stopped as soon as I finished reading a few pages. I found several areas that just frustrated me because of the way the sentence were structured, and the way the POV would switch back and forth in the same page several times. I found several errors and when I downloaded it, it somehow downloaded with the wrong alignment. It looked choppy, but I would never consider that any part of my rating system although a little frustrating to read, I got through it like a champion. To me the story did not flow very well, it did not have enough material, although it was at times emotional when she met the spirits and their sad tale.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
Title: Special’s Love Author: Jennifer Blaney Format: ebook 170 Genre: Paranormal Romance Mature YA Novel Cover: 1 star Main Characters: Brianna, Kyle & Michael Rating: 3 stars Series: Yes
I received this book from the Lovers of Paranormal Group as a R2R
Stars: 2
Overall: So let me start out by saying that i really enjoyed the idea behind this story and kind of reminded me of the show The Ghost Whisper. ( BIG FAN ) My biggest problem with this book is that everything felt WAY to rushed. I also felt that the characters repeated themselves. Nicki character i thought was a very good twist to the story, but i honestly would've made her relationship with Kyle something longer, so her actions would make more sense. So like i said before, i really liked the ideas with the story, I would just personally slow it down a bit and give the readers a chance to fall in love with the characters.
Characters: Kyle & Brianna
Page Turner: Yes & No
Series Cont: Yes
Recommend: Maybe ; but i think the book still needs a few changes.
I bought this book on amazon~ A Special's Love by Jennifer Blaney
This is the first book that this author has written and it was a wonderful first book in its entirety. This is a unique read that parts of it reminds me of the tv show the ghost whisperer. I loved the unique story and character's. The only thing I wish there was more of is the descriptions or the meat of the story. Other than than it was a nice fast read that I can't wait to read the next installment of the series!! I give this a 4 star review.
