A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

Before the Civil War the New Avengers left Echo taking care of business in Japan. During the Civil War Elektra and The Hand turned up. After the Civil War the New Avengers are sole rebels as the conspiracy they are investigating means they cannot sign the SHRA and work for Stark and SHIELD! When Maya sends out a call for help, the team respond.

Not as masterly as the previous volumes but a must-read for the continuity which is one of the key pieces of the Bendis run that can sometime be forgotten it's the ongoing plot that makes this run so great and this book is a prime example, with Civil Wat aftermath and Tokyo battles just the cover for the real story going on! Alsy features Hawkeye's formal return to the Avengers' universe. 7 out of 12.

The Avengers are on the run... from the Avengers? Iron Man continues his dickish ways and spends his time trying to arrest the outlaw Avengers instead of going after actual criminals. Then the team heads to Japan to help Echo escape the Hand after she was stranded by Cap's death. Ronin is a fantastic character design. I wish Marvel would bring back the character. The revelation at the end of this blew my mind. Bendis has had this all planned out for so long and it shows.

Wow.
That was awesome. We just went from Civil War to The Initiative, to the start of Secret Invasion all in One volume.

Oh, and Hawkeye came back from the dead and found Scarlet Witch, left her be, and took on a new identity.

Bendis is tip top for, here, and Lenil Yu Art is GORGEOUS.

We also get a showdown with Iron Man's Mighty Avengers, and a Roster Change.

Pre Civil War: Cap, Iron Man, Spidey, Luke Cage, Spider-Woman, the Sentry (on a part time basis), and Wolverine after the Savage Land. Oh and Ronin was on contract in Japan, and Daredevil was too busy. Ms. Marvel was way too into wanting to be in...

During, they were Secret ie. underground, led by Cap against Tony.

Tony and Sentry and Marvel are now the Mighty (gov't stooge) Avengers, with Wasp, Widow, Ares and Wonder Man.

Our New Secret Newer? Luke, Logan, Spidey, Spideyette, Dr. Strange, Iron Fist (not DD), and Ronin, who dies, but is only a contract worker, who then sends word to DD, who wants her saved from the Hand....and another dead person becomes Ronin #2, when they go to avenge Echo, Dead Ronin #1 Maya Lopez aka Echo.

Oh and Cap is still dead. Even after a dirty trick by Tony.

Follow all that? Still no Daredevil. But Maya aka Ronin 1 is alive, as is Ronin 2, who was dead, but has now been offered 2 new identities in various books, having abandoned the last one...

Oh and Elektra, dead and revived, runs the Hand....or does she? Or is she even Alive? Or who? What? Huh? At least Logan and the Silver Samurai are still not buddies.

Great book, great teamwork, looking forward to where this leads us!!!

This was a pretty good volume and like is divided into two parts. One takes place in the past with the New Avengers on the run and well teaming up with Dr Strange and then engaging the Mighty Avengers in a fight and its a fun face off and magics and all that but the big story is set in Japan with them going to rescue Maya and well Hawkeye is back as Ronin and we see where he has been and all and the big battle with Elektra and the Hand and its so cool to see them fight Ninjas and the quips between Spidey and Hawkeye is awesome!

The big ending changes things so much and like leads to the next big Marvel event and its super exciting. Though some dialogue was clunky I felt its still a solid read and also the art could use some work, it really kills the excitement to read forward but regardless overall good volume and sets up the Avengers with a new status quo again.

The New Avengers aren't kind of the broken avengers now after civil war.

Cap is dead. Ronin is dead (or dying). Hawkeye is back because...comics. Between Iron-man hunting down people who won't register with the rest of the new laws, and then add in the fact Electra has killed Ronin, and then twist and turns non-stop things start crumbling around our heroes. Then...the biggest twist of them all. Is a new war upon our heroes?

Good: The brawl between the new avengers and the mighty avengers was great. The feel of being chased is scary and gives a new outlook for our heroes. Hawkeyes return isn't bad either, despite it being less than two years since he's been dead. I also thought the ending is a great build up to big events coming.

Bad: The stuff with electra is just a huge fucking fight that last far too long. Even the banter was getting annoyed. Also the hawkeye with scarlet witch stuff was okay though it lasted far too long and could have been wrapped up better.

Overall a solid volume. Not amazing but a better show than the last volume. Bendis gives our heroes fun adventures but it's starting to be the run of the mil. A 3 out of 5.

Hawkeye (#26). A nice bit of continuity here, revealing the current status of the missing Clint Barton and Wanda Maximoff. There's not a lot of plot here, but this was a great signal that Bendis wasn't letting these plotlines go, and it had beautiful artwork by Alex Maleev, my favorite of Bendis' artistic partners [4/5].

Revolution (#27-31). The first time I read this arc, I found it confusing, but on later reads I can better appreciate its unorthodox plot structure. This story does a great job of laying out the status of all the Avengers post-Civil War, of having an exciting return to Japan and Echo, and of setting up the Secret Invasion with a stunning revelation. (Sadly, Secret Invasion drops the ball, but that's literally another story.) By juggling all these plot points, "Revolution" creates a story that always interesting [4/5].

Hot damn that was an exhilarating read. Bendis is writing his ass off here, he’s in top form.

It switches between events throughout the arc and it’s done to maximum effect.

New Avengers continues to be a great read especially if you like the Bendis way of operating. I loved every page of this and highly recommend this.

In the wake of Civil War, Captain America was apparently dead, while Iron Man and Sentry decamped for a sanctioned Avengers team. The other New Avengers were joined by Doctor Strange, Iron Fist and a new Ronin, a/k/a old friend Hawkeye, back from the dead and a controversial encounter with an amnesiac and depowered Scarlet Witch. The plot picked up Echo’s story as she cut a swath through the Japanese underworld. The New Avengers responded to Echo’s S.O.S. after dodging several attempts by Iron Man’s Mighty Avengers to bring them in for non-compliance with the Registration Act. After a bloody battle with the Hand, Echo killed Elektra. Except that in death, her corpse turned into that of an alien Skrull.

The “rebel” Avengers concept took root in this arc. It was a big departure from the roots of the classic team and not always a good fit. Brian Michael Bendis continued to trowel on the “sell out” rhetoric and accrued hate for Tony Stark at a rate that made none of the supposed “rebel heroes” look remotely good. That disparity in the “morality” level assigned by Bendis to the two factions sapped what could have been potent drama from the set-up, so clearly were the writer’s sympathies telegraphed. The Japan-set sequences were far more engaging. It was a relief for the series to finally pick up Echo’s story after so long a lay-off, the fight with The Hand was well designed and the revelation that a Skrull had replaced Elektra hit with real impact. However, the unnecessarily complex time structure, switching back and forth from the Japan scenes to the New Avengers’ earlier clashes with the Mighty Avengers, was tricksy and distracting. It was nice to have Hawkeye back, even if he was calling himself Ronin and had apparently abandoned most of his hard-won maturity from the prior couple of decades. Leinil Francis Yu came aboard as the regular artist and his gritty, shadowy style was an apt mood match for Bendis’s darker story. Yu generally had a strong sense for storytelling and page design that served the story, even if his physical depictions, especially faces, could be somewhat distended and at times even grotesque. This was a transitional arc in many ways, but still had enough interesting moments to be worth a read.

The story was a bit confusing with the time jumps and flashbacks, but it wasn't bad. The art was something else, but it grew on me, I kinda like the sketchy style and love all the detail!
Besides, I'm still sad (and mad) about Civil War and everyone should just suck it up.

Brian Michael Bendis's The New Avengers series iust keep getting better and better, and this one maybe was the most important and cleverly written yet! In one single volume the story builds and develops from the post-Civil War Marvel U to the risen conflict between the government sanctioned The Mighty Avengers (AKA Iron Man's team) and the unregistered rebels of The New Avengers (AKA recently dead Cap's team) to the continuation of previous plot threads in Japan to finally the first revelations of the upcoming Secret Invasion. Wow. Wildly enjoyable superlative storytelling.

P.S. LOVED that Doctor Strange and Hawkeye finally joined the rebel Avengers instead of the "official" Avengers team, and their headquarter is now Strange's camouflaged Sanctum Santorum!

When the Superhuman Registration Act was passed, many heroes refused to register and went underground. Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Spider-Woman, Iron Fist, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Hawkeye and Jessica Drew are some of those who refuse to work under the US government's control. Instead, they split their time between opposing government forces and with their usual superheroing. In this case, that means saving Maya Lopez, who took up the mantle of Ronin but was eventually overwhelmed by Elektra's Hand ninjas.

The writing is clever, easy to follow, and gives a good feel for the characters and their histories with each other. The art is much better than I'm used to getting in modern comics, which generally seem to compete to hire the least talented artists possible. Alex Maleev's work in the first few issues is a beautiful marriage between comics and Klimt:
Leinill Yu's work is good, although there's too much heavy shading for my tastes. And he does occasionally gift us with something ridiculous like this:
Spider-Woman's amazing anatomy!
I don't care how many superpowers Spider-Woman has--her boobs shouldn't be as big as her head and twice the size of her waist. Stop drawing shit like that!

So the New Avengers continues with a story arc that picks up several dangling plot threads from the stories that have come before. First of all we have the return of twice dead Hawkeye, followed by the return of Maya Lopez as Ronin followed by the aftermath of the Civil War. It's an interesting volume that can get slightly confusing at times as it darts between the past and present. At it's heart it is a rescue and recovery mission from those that are now viewed as criminals in light of the superhero registration act. It's good fun and does a good job at continuing the themes that have been alluded to previously whilst paying of breadcrumbs laid before and ending on a cliffhanger that fully hints at what's to come.

In all a solid if not entirely stand out arc in this thoroughly enjoyable series.

The return of Clint Barton, and lots of ninjas. The New Avengers go on a mission to Japan to rescue Echo from the Hand. The Skrull plot thickens, as it turns out that Elektra has been replaced by a Skrull. What the New Avengers think is Spider-Woman takes that Skrull's body to Tony Stark. Those of Tony Stark's Avengers and the New Avengers who are familiar with the Skrulls are alarmed by this development.

Also in these issues, before the trip to Japan, Tony Stark is looking hard for the New Avengers who didn't sign his Registration Act. The New Avengers and some of Tony's Avengers are mourning the death of Captain America. Those superheroes who have heard about the Skrull posing as Elektra think that perhaps Tony has been replaced by a Skrull, since that might explain his behavior. Apparently a large part of the job of the self-appointed Illuminati, of which Tony is one, is to prevent a Skrull invasion of Earth. Oops.

The reader finds out what the reference in the Children's Crusade is to Clint Barton having "tea" with Wanda Maximoff, who he finds living near Wundagore Mountain -- I think? -- anyway, somewhere in Eastern Europe. Wanda now thinks she's a peasant girl who's never left the mountain but somehow she's fluent in English. Dr. Strange had warned Clint that he wouldn't find closure. This interaction with Wanda does not help Clint's mental state.

In the pages of the West Coast Avengers, before Wanda's breakdown, Janet van Dyne, separated from the abusive Hank Pym at the time, had confided in Wanda that she had had a bit of a pregnancy scare, and was relieved to find out that there wasn't going to be a Hawkeye Junior, because that's all she'd need. "I don't know how you thought you could manage two!" she tells Wanda. Oops. Agatha Harkness had made Wanda forget all about how Master Pandemonium had taken Billy and Tommy and made them his hands. Agatha had told Wanda right before that that the twins were just magical constructs who disappeared when Wanda wasn't thinking about them.
However, with slipups like Jan's, Wanda got the sense that something wasn't right.

Hawkeye and Spider-Man have good reasons to be upset when they get their memories back from the rewrite Wanda did in House of M. Although at least Spider-Man didn't have "tea" with Wanda. Catching up with older storylines helps explain some of the reactions to events that the characters have in newer issues.

More like a 3.5/5.

While the whole battle with Elektra/The Hand in Tokyo plus the one in NYC against the Mighty Avengers were cool, I felt like they dragged too long, also the Hawkeye/SW issue was weird, and also how they jump from the last volume that was in the middle of Civil War and now here they are like if nothing happened, when did Dr. Strange joined, and Wolverine out of nowhere is back and Spidey is all smiles while May is in a coma?

Also there’s only room for one clown in the team and here we have Spidey, Luke and Clint/Ronin chatting non-stop while fighting ninjas, it was fun on the first two volumes but the characters should have evolved by now and they still interact like if they just met.

I’m halfway through the Bendis run (#1-#64) and I’m honestly thinking of this as a 3.5/5.

The new penciller here is also interesting... not bad but also kinda different from what we were getting, they should have put him on the new Mighty Avengers book and keep the original on New Avengers.

The superhero Civil War is over and the Avengers are shattered. Captain America is dead and Iron Man and Sentry have joined the government sponsored Mighty Avengers team. The remaining New Avengers are considered to be fugitives and terrorists, constantly on the run from the law while still trying to do good where they can. They consist of Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Ronin, and Wolverine.

This is really really good. Bendis was clearly planning this new status quo from the beginning and it's just a pleasure to read. The difference between pre-Civil War New Avengers and post-Civil War Avengers reminds me of the difference between Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. before and after Winter Soldier.

It’s really impressive how much Bendis’s singular vision shaped the entire marvel lineup for basically a decade. This volume handles the fallout of civil war up through the beginning of secret invasion. It’s impressive that a book with a casts this size is able to roll with the changes that come out of those events so handily, even as characters are killed or leave the team in other books, the main avengers title never loses steam. Just good shared-universe comics storytelling. Yu also delivers some of his most interesting work here with rougher pencils and more abstract and emotive character design.

Avengers Endgame).

bendis just does not miss with new avengers. i mean, you can’t put together a team of sexy funny people and expect me to not become absolutely obsessed with it. leinil yu’s art is gorgeous as always. LOVED the twist at the end so much. the “another neighborhood starbucks coming soon” sign on the sanctum sanctorum is hilarious. dr strange is SO COOL in this. i love peter’s exchanges with cage and i loved the bit where clint and peter were exchanging quips while they were fighting the ninjas. i could go on and on listing all the parts i loved in this but i think i will just leave it there

Continuing my reading of the New Avengers (Bendis - 2004), the Civil War is still raging even after Captain America's death, but the new twist is that Elektra was a skrull -- so is Secret Invasion storyline right behind this? I get confused as to what happens when in Marvel, but obviously no one knows why their worlds have become so topsy-turvy and now the New Avengers have a good idea that this may be a clandestine war and only they know about it, but who can they trust?

The title is kinda boring for this run.

Mostly, we’re just getting a mix of Civil War aftermath and Secret Invasion foreshadowing. Some witty banter (as well as some very nonwitty banter). The art is pretty cool.

My emotional investment in what’s happening is kind of low. It doesn’t have that oomf that gets me excited. We’ll see how the next volumes do.

At first I was WTF? more Bendis/Maleev obscurantist nonsense, but it all made sense at the end, Yu is a terrific artist. Maleev to me is not one of my favorites. Bendis as many probably already know can be like a house on fire or a dark, dank basement of boring despair. For most of this book he was a house on fire.

This is right after Civil War so the Avengers are on the outs with Iron Man and co and Cap is dead. I felt like the whole Luke Cage getting busted for stopping a robbery while he's just out trying to buy some milk is....still unfortunately very resonant. I loved the bits with everyone hiding out in Dr. Strange's place. Again, just not a big fan of the ninjas.
