Dalton Wolf

Dalton Wolf was born in the most famous, least known suburb in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from high school in 1986 without honors, and without distinction, and has managed to turn both of those descriptives into a perpetual state of being. He went on to graduate a few years later from ITT with a certificate in Automative Technology and followed with 2.5 years of the college thing before life slapped him in the head a few times and forced him to get a real job working steel. Dalton has lived in the Kansas City area for most of his life. Dalton likes to spend his time writing, playing computer games, bowling, and relaxing on the deck of his trailer on one of Missouri's wonderful, Corp of Engineers-made lakes.

From the time he read Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain at age eleven, Dalton's desire was to be a Fantasy writer. This desire grew even stronger after thoroughly enjoying The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and The Belgariad and Mallorean by David Eddings. Dalton is sorry to admit that he failed miserably at the fantasy writing, but accidentally stumbled into writing a sci-fi space opera through a totally incomprehensible collection of unfortunate accidents. Storm on the Frontier is Dalton's first book and the culmination of an 8 year struggle between his hopes and dreams, and the reality of life in a cold uncaring universe. His second Book, On the Eye of the Universe will follow in late Oct or Nov of 2012.

This is a book that was not really on my to-read list. I stumbled onto it when I browsed Amazon’s “People who bought this book also bought…” recommendations for one of my previous books. I have to say that I am very happy that I decided to read it. It is definitely one of the better books that I have read in quite some time.

This is a comparatively large book. According to Amazon’s estimate it is 407 pages but I think they have used a rather small font size when doing that estimate since it is much larger than most other books claiming 300+ pages. It is all worth reading though. The world building is quite detailed and very good. Some readers seem to have problems with the amount of detail that went into the world building and it is true that sometimes the author drones on about details a bit too much but it is well written and I did not really find it a major problem and I am normally quite negative towards authors filling out their books with bla bla.

The characters are interesting and there is a lovely dry humor in the book. The mysterious hero, Baran Igashu, is a man with many secrets. At times he remembered me of the main characters in some of Alistair McLean’s books. Capable, always a step ahead of everyone else, quick tongue and not really what he seemed to be from the start.

A lot of the book is spent on setting the stage for the main story, introducing the universe and the characters, and this is written in a way that, to me at least, made for a very enjoyable read even though these parts are normally the, I would not say boring but at least, less interesting parts of a book. That does not mean that there are no action in the book. There are action as well as mystery and suspense and it is all very well written.

The book was really sucking me in and I always wanted to continue “just a few more pages” when reading it. I will most definitely read the next one in the series.

Readers that enjoy detailed descriptions and a character driven narratives will like this story that mixes a blend of space navy, rogue traders and mysterious alien adversaries into a nice solid plot. Reminicent of Battlestar Galactica, with a dash of Firefly and umpteen military based novels, Storm on the Frontier - part one, introduces readers to a vibrant culture with masses of backstory. There's action, mystery and political intrigue; space drives, ships and aliens all thrown together with an obvious love of the genre from the author.

I'll be honest and say that it's not always an easy read, as the writer's fondness for detail, character driven internal dialogues and a telling style tend to slow the pace, but it's worth the effort to see where it takes you.

If the author were to try a more active style on his next outing, I'd be sure to take a look. He knows his military SF.

I had to quit reading this one at the 7% mark on my Kindle– page after page of intricate details, background, and very slow with very little dialogue and nothing to get you interested in continuing. I would give this one a pass. Luckily, I picked this up for free during a promotion vs. its normal price of $2.99 which adds a star to my review.
