I have the highest regard for Steve Trotter as an author. His book “Resurrected: An Adam Wolf Thriller” was recommended to me last year and I found it to be extremely well-written, fast moving, witty and full of black humour. I definitely rate it as one of my two favourite books of 2012. I recommended it to all of my friends, family and work colleagues; something that I, as a reader, have never done before. I cannot put my finger really on why I loved, and still do, that book so much. John, my husband, also thought that it was great.

So when I heard that Mr Trotter was going to publish a second book in 2013, I just couldn’t wait to read it. I realized at the time that I had very high expectations for this book and wondered if the author could possibly maintain the same standard as “Resurrected”. Well when the e-book came out, I purchased “Heaven’s on Hold: An Adam Wolf Thriller” from Amazon.fr and it was residing on my Kindle last weekend. Although very eager to read it (I loved the cover), I was reading a beautiful poetry book and I had to finish that first.

Well I duly began the book and I soon realized that I didn’t like the first chapter. The writing style was nothing like the previous much-loved book. I realize that the first chapter has to set the scene but there were also expletives in there which I’m not wild about. When I read the word “showtime” I had a feeling of dread. The last sentence in the chapter was “One zap from Sparky was all it took to get the party started.”

If I hadn’t read “Resurrected” and had faith in the author, I would have abandoned the book there and then. So I continued but with a certain amount of hesitation.

The book indeed has a strong story and revolves around the central character Robbi Viper, “a guitar-slinging rocker” to quote the author, and she has a tour that is starting on Halloween in Montreal. Robbi is also a great champion of protecting women who suffer violence from men (the main theme of the book). I always think that there is somethng exotic about Montreal even though I’ve never been there. Anyway, threats start being made against Robbi, encouraging her to cancel her tour. Her lookalike, under the stage name of Ronnie Diamondback is “crucified” and left on the billboard that is advertising the tour. It was a very gruesome murder and I won’t spoil it all by saying what happened to her.

There was one excellent chapter with a rather "amusing" murder involving a thug and chef Romano in a kitchen. As for the sauce! I laughed out loud at this!

The rocker’s husband Billy Starr is also her manager and as he’s getting worried about the threats that Robbi is receiving, decides to ask Night Owl (a security expert), to protect her, and thus make the problem go away. However, he cannot make it as he’s broken his leg and so his brother Adam goes in his place. It then all starts to happen, with mobsters included, Sal Asiago being one of the villains, and ending with an incredible denouement that I had not thought at all possible.

The characters such as Adam, Night Owl, Beck, Elvis (lovely section with his broken nose), Robbi, were excellent but I found Jazz, the girlfriend, to be somewhat lacklustre. Zappa was the individual though that fascinated me and Adam’s mother was beautifully portrayed. I was also quite touched to see that “Solstice” was mentioned in the book. A rather moving memoir that I also read last year and still browse through from time to time.

I have no doubt that many people will love this book and I know that it would make an excellent film. I’m also looking forward to reading the author’s next book in the series. Nevertheless, my final thoughts about this book are that, even though the story is excellent, I didn’t like some of the language, and that’s why I have rated it as a four. With a different first chapter and a few other tweaks I would have rated it as a five.

I will never know what makes a great book but the previous book “Resurrected” was one of those and that’s for sure.

One of the few new-to-me series that are 5-star reads (reserved for ones I re-read) for me. At this point my biggest complaint is that the author doesn't write fast enough.

Great characters and fast, well written action sequences with enough 'down time' scenes for the reader to catch their breath.

My only criticisms are pretty much the same issues I had with the first book. There's more emphasis on the main female character in this book, but I'd still like to see more depth and a bit more 'kick-ass' attitude being developed. I'd also like to see some of the supporting characters (lead character's friends) with more exposure.

This series has just gone to my 'must buy' list.

HEAVEN’S ON HOLD: An Adam Wolf Thriller
by Steve Trotter

Hang onto your hat! Steve Trotter has done it again with HEAVEN’S ON HOLD. Wolf, Jazz, Night Owl and Casper are back and they’re in deep trouble.

This one will keep you guessing. It’s about rock ‘n’ roll, and it’s a killer, too. Don’t turn out the light until the music’s over. I wouldn’t kid ya.

REVIEW

Adam Wolf is back, and is funnier and slicker than ever. I just adore this character, an older guy who writes children's books and kicks ass? Seriously, move over Alex Cross. Trotter's writing is so funny I laughed out loud for a lot of the book, and the plot zips along at a nice pace with an intriguing journey. Steve really has a way with words, and the writing is gruff and manly, just how a male character should be, with a gooey heart underneath. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the editing and cover are spot on too. A brilliant sequel.
