Colton Davis has always dreamed of living a life of adventure like the treasure hunters he’s read about, but he never imagined he’d find even more than that. Then one geocaching excursion thrust him into a magical world filled with deadly jungles, valuable artifacts, and ancient temples. But raiding these mysterious temples isn’t for the faint of heart. Once he enters, every moment could be his last, and the promise of reward has led thousands to their deaths within these ever-changing halls. So it’s no wonder why so many here are willing to go to murderous lengths just to gain the most valuable asset an adventurer could An eidolon. The rarest female beings in all of Fablewild.
The MC is annoying. Maybe it's worse as an audiobook but it made it hard to get through. Want a summary... "Omg, I can't believe this you're amazing", "Omg no, you're amazing", "Omg I can't believe how amazing you are!" "Have I told you you're amazing?"... wth needs that much reaffirmation !?!?
Okay, so firstly the title and cover are incredible and awesome.
But the book and story are truly what's fascinating about this new series from Eric Vall. From an awesome fantasy world with deadly temple dungeons and challenges, to gorgeous and deadly warrior spirit women, I didn't want to stop reading once I started.
Eric goes in another amazing direction and hammers another one over the wall.bad news is you get to the end , and have toward for the next installment. Hurry..read, review so we get the next one!!!
This review is actually for the first 2 parts of this series. As with more of its series, Vall's premise is pretty nice (guy finds portal to another world, there has to raid temples and finds rings that summon beasts that fight along him and are also pretty girls) but the execution is a bit too repetitive and shallow to be perfect. It's aimed at young adults based on its simplicity, glosses over many of the complexities of real life (for example you can't just drop of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry at a pawn shop and expect the money to be wired to your bank account no questions asked). At the same time some of the setup is quite clever (On earth the ring summons girls, through the portal they are beasts instead, so there is variety there. Also the beings aren't humans so many of their peculiarities, including uncritical devotion, can be waved away as the result of magic). Admittely the premise here is very similar to some of Vall's other series (e.g. Pocket Dungeon), also does have somewhat annoying levels of angst and naivety, is oftentimes quite slow and boring in its blow by blow slice of life depiction of everyday living, with a particularly high frequency of repetitive introspective paragraphs focused on exasperatingly few themes (I'm happy to be with my girls, Let's have sex, I'm scared of some rando guy who seems to follow me around, but despite my high level of combat expertise I won't confront him and stay angsty instead), but on the other hand the dialogues and plot development are generally executed well here with enough variety, e.g. visiting different areas of the virtual world with different temples and with puzzle / combat encounters that are very nicely done, and some cute / funny scenes, also mostly avoiding the douchy male chauvinist stuff that other authors in this genre feature. C tier but ok C tier. This could be great with a bit more ciritical editing, now it's at least ok for light reading / listening. (And see Logan Jacobs and Bruce Sentar for some higher quality material in the same genre).
DNF. It spent so much time in the puzzle section, in which the puzzles are so easy as to be redundant and the personality of the MC can be summed as "I cannot die, this is my adventure", which removes all sense of excitement or wonder for this section.
Maybe it gets good after the wolf transform into the lady in the cover, but unless it becomes into the exploring version "Sherlock is garbage and here is why", its not worth the time. The MC is uninteresting, lacks all common sense, his sense of wonder comes as artificial and, well the fights were just boring.
An unusual twist on a proven storyline. So, our hero gets transported to a different world, where he raids temples for treasures. Plus, he get a helper (eidolon) in the form of a wolf, but is also a human female back on good ole Earth. The story moves along nicely and the action is described very well. There’s a couple of adult situations, which I’m not a fan of, so I just skip over them. Overall, a quick, fun read.
The story needs a bit more attention to details. Throws the gun away then later checks it for damage, takes a sword and doesn't use it, takes a shower then has to undress to get in bed, just to point out a few. Other than that, I like the story. It has vibes of the13th floor and backyard dungeon stores, with a bit more danger thrown into the mix. Looking forward to the next one.
Nice amount of action and puzzles. Really liked the temple raids and how he found out different entrances and time off day can change the difficulty of the raids. Liked learning about the Eidolons and can't wait to learn more about them. Looking forward to the next book.
Not what I expected but in a very good way with a great mix between earth and a new vivid world of magic, monsters and dungeons. I look forward to reading the next book.
Wonderful tale of a regular Joe finding a new life. Making money and finding a new friend,as well as a new enemy. Playful storyline with wit, humor, and action all rolled perfectly together. This should be another fun read from Eric.
I'm excited to see where this series goes.was a bit slow in the beginning, and there were some areas of the book that didn't flow reading wise, but all in all, a good solid start to a new series.
I enjoyed it. The blurb doesn't do the plot justice, and I almost passed on reading it. I gave it a chance because I was bored, and well Eric's books rarely let me down . I'm so glad I read it and look forward to book 2 hopefully soon.
This was a super fun and entertaining adventure, the protagonist is super relatable and the supporting characters really add great flavor to the text! I eagerly await the next one!
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are different and develop at slower speed. I like to get to know the characters. Great adventures in mystic deadly temples. Waiting for book 2 will be hard
If you have read Eric Vall series before then you know how great they are. If you have not read any , start here and enjoy the innovation and adventures he generates. On to the next book!
What can I say. This book has it all great storyline. An interesting fantasy world and excellent characters. An MC that's not overpowered with support characters that are interesting and fun and funny. I'll be there for the next installment.
I have good memories of the Summoner series from this author (that was nearly 4 years ago!) But this one was harder to read, the MC is in la la land, and the romance is just as puerile as the story.
Eidolon Master was an excellent and fun read. It’s full of action and the world building for this series is great. Very excited to see how this series develops!
This by far the best one yet. I really can't express how much I enjoyed this fantasy. The adventure, respect and outright love exemplifies what is a true bond is.
