This was an ok read. Nothing special, yet entertaining and it captured my attention.

It was not perfect. Some elements used were renowned and some predictability was certainly present.

This was one of those books I never wanted to end. That's how comfortable I felt with the characters and their world. Yes, this is a story about a witch and a shifter falling in love. These two characters are at the chore of the story, but this is about so much more than just two people falling in love. What makes it a magical story, is how the characters are built and fleshed out and 'real' in all their unreality.

But what really wrapped me up and made me feel so comfortable with this book, is the world-building. I love that I wasn't just thrown into the middle of a story and left confused for the first half of the book. Yes, it does happen a lot with paranormal books. The world-building is gradual, you have the time to get comfortable with the information you've been given before you learn something new. It's all gradual and well paced.

The vamps and shifters and witches in this book are nothing new, but at the same time it's a fresh take on the paranormal aspect. Shifters are the good guys, vamps are the bad guys, while the witches are a mix of those two. These days vamps are pretty much the hottest thing on the block, so it's nice to see them reverted to a bad guy role. Being an old fan of Buffy, vamps were always bad with the exception of Angel and a few others.

What I love the most about two people falling in love, is the UST (unresolved sexual tension). Nothing kills the story faster than two characters falling in bed before you reach the end of chapter one. Unless you're reading erotica. But that's a different genre.

BloodSworn is an intense book. There really is no downtime for the reader to relax. Stacey Brutger even manages to surprise me a few times, which is a rare thing. When you've read a number of books, few things are a surprise. It's the same if you watch a lot of TV or a lot of movies - after a while, things just stop surprising you. So when that happens, it's a real treat.

That being said, the book suffers from a few typos and grammar mistakes. But with how well Stacey Brutger pulls you into her world, it's not something you notice too much. My biggest beef with this book were the various spellings of 'athame'. I saw it spelled at least three different ways, might have been four. I stopped counting, so I'm not sure which it was. How it was spelled where in the book also varied, so I'm not sure if it's autocorrect, editor trouble, author not knowing how to spell it, or simply typos. But it don't matter, doesn't take away from the overall quality of the book.

This book goes right onto my favorites shelf, and the author joins the ranks of my favorite authors. :)

I know there were some complaints with the typos and font size, but I managed to get a corrected copy that was reissued through Amazon by the author. So, not a lot of issues on that front for me. Any minor typos in my copy were easily overlooked because I was too wrapped up in the story. And no issues with the font size in my copy either.

Personally, I love Ms. Brutger's books. This makes my third that I've devoured and I can't wait to read more. I read a sample of this particular book at the end of The Demon Within and have been waiting for it since then.

This author has a great way of writing the element of magic in action scenes in her stories which I really enjoy. Definitely keeps me flipping the pages, or in this case, touching my kindle screen. I've never been the biggest "magic" or witch lover, but it's really starting to grow on me. Of course, throw some shifters in the mix, and I can't help but get caught up in it since I love shifters.

Merrick and Trina are both likeable characters. They seemed to compliment each other and it was pleasant to read their attraction shape up into a romance while they're dodging attempts on both of their lives. There was a nice balance of romance and suspense in Bloodsworn in my opinion.

And Merrick...There's just something about an alpha male chasing after the woman he's fallen in love with. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he's a possessive, sexy, lion shifter either. So, it should come as no surprise that I love this hero.

There were also some secondary characters I would love to read more about, such as Weston and Judith. Weston had that air of secrecy that made me quite curious about him. And Judith, well, I just liked her, even in the beginning. I like tough women that don't mind doing what needs to be done in order to get to the top.

All in all, I thought Bloodsworn was another great read by this author, and I can't wait to read more.

What I liked about this book was the quality of the MCs. Merrick is the Leo (alpha) of his pack, but he is not the usual alpha who listens to no one, always keeps the heroine behind him (if not tricked into staying home), runs roughshod over her feelings, or traps her with her sexuality. We're told he rules the pack with an iron first, but he always treats Trina, the heroine, as an equal. In addition to the insta-attraction, there is a real affection between the two characters that is usually missing. Merrill has feelings beyond "she mine - must protect". This book easily passes the Bechdel test. Trina talks to other women, they talk about something other than a man, and there is more than one reasonably well rounded female character. For romances I would add that Trina thinks about something other than Merrick. For PNR I would add that Trina acts on her own ideas.

The plot was good and there was plenty of action. I liked a lot of the dialog because it was so natural. At one point early on, Victor, the second in command, challenges Trina's right to be at a murder scene. One of her reasons is magic: "unless you can pull magic out of your ass, I guess that leaves me." My only problem with this book is the large number of typos. At a quick glance I counted 17, but that wasn't going through the whole book.

Read again: it doesn't stand. Or rather I will not stand by my previous review.
3 1\2

A self-published UF, BloodSworn gave me a few strong deja-read moments that overall did not detract much from the pleasure of reading it.

There's a nice plot, with some world-building and quite a dose of romance. It's good to know that, at least in UF, heroines and heroes can keep their pants on and check their safety first.

Even if they were firmly in the field of classic UF hero and heroine (they are both alphas and she as a unique power etc.), the characters were interesting to read and well rounded.
It was good to notice that a strong adversary did remain a strong warrior woman and did not make a villainess. :)

Notice that there were a few typos and a few confusing moments (at least for me).

I was intrigued by a sneak peak at the book on Raven. But I admit that the price was a bit too high for a self pub. @5$ I expect the same editing of a "published" book (or close enough).

“His desire to find that special someone, the deep yearning to be mated matched her own so closely that it knocked her for a loop. He was so imposing, so demanding that she would’ve never guessed part of him felt so alone.”

Stacey Brutger once again managed to amaze me with her ability to write an engaging heroine. I loved Trina, and her chemistry with Merrick was a delight to read. As a hero, Merrick managed to be protective of his heroine without acting like a controlling asshole—a characteristic common among this trope’s alpha heroes—which I found refreshing. The plot itself was intriguing, if not completely original.

I do think that some editing would go far in making the story feel more cohesive. There were multiple instances where the author contradicted something that she had previously written, which left me questioning the integrity of characters’ actions and decisions. This could—in part—be due to the author trying to condense the characters and plot into a single book.

There are witches, shifters and vampires in this book. They are described as factions with different interests and tasks in the supernatural community. And standing between all this is Trina, a very special witch since she can do blood magic. Because her powers were bound when she was younger she mainly grew up like someone without magic and became a scientist. Merrick's pack needs a scientist badly for a strange illness is killing shifters.
At first Merrick and Trina do not get along at all. But after they face some dangerous situations they become closer. Merrick even helps Trina to free her sister.
The problem is everyone wants Trina and the shifters are bound to be the neutral faction between the witches and vampires. But Merrick will risk everything for Trina. And Trina is tired of running away even now where her powers are finally free of their binding.
The book was exciting and everything was brought to a satisfying conclusion. There are just minor things in the writing like sentence that are not really finished or a plot lines which were abandoned half way through like with the rowan stake.

Good storyline

I love all of Stacey's book and this was no exception. This one is slightly shorter than her other books. I would have liked to see some more in-depth/background on the characters. Maybe start off the book with the night Trina's parents were killed as well. There were a few grammar issues that slowed the pace at times, at least for me. Overall I would recommend this if you like witches, werewolves, vampires, with some romance thrown in to spice things up.

BloodSworn BloodSworn by Stacey Brutger

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

NOTE: Any reviews that mention formatting/grammar problems should be ignored since those have been corrected and the ebooks up for sale now have the new corrected version.

Review:
Trina thought she had found the perfect place to hide when she used a bit of magic to get her through all the guards on the property of Merrick. The fact that he could see her (when nobody else could) almost every time she came onto his property to hide in a large shed on his land should have told them something.

This story revolves around 2 main plots. The romance of Merrick trying to slowly convince Trina that she desired him as much as he desired her was a VERY frustratingly slow process but very entertaining, since they both felt a strong pull for each other but Trina was dedicated to another task, the somewhat urban fantasy plot of trying to recover her kidnapped sister back from the vampire king (the vampires in this story are far from being nice and sparkly).

The story is a great one of magic, passion, loyalty, mystery and then you throw in the evil bad guys (vampires and witches), and you now have all the trappings for a really good story. Oh and least we forget a few zombies show up, what a party –grin-

There are a lot more complexities to this story than I can tell here but it was entertaining, kept my interest and ended very nicely wrapped up. This is an easy 4 Star reading and maybe more depending on your mood.

Trina is the last known bloodwitch. The witches have bound her powers and banished her to the human world after her parents’ murder ten years before by vampires, but now those bindings are now weakening. As her sister is kidnapped to use as a lure, Trina decides to hide on shifter lands until events lead to her receiving protection from the Leo, which means becoming his concubine.

Merrick is a lion shifter and the Leo of the pack. The seemingly incurable shifter disease has become more rampant. A mystery woman has been sneaking into the Den for weeks now, by-passing all of his guards. She intrigues him and his beast, so he offers her protection to keep her close. Trina belongs with him, and he will go to any length to convince her of it, even to the point of placing her before his life and his pack.

Her blood is very powerful for all races, having a big significance for each. She has to rescue her sister, avoiding vampires and witches, and find a cure for the mysterious disease infecting shifters. There is also an added menace from the possibility of traitors to the pack. Merrick has to convince her not only that she belongs with him, but that she does not have to be alone, accepting help before it is too late.

There is a different take on the oft used themes of vampires, witches and shape-shifters that is engrossing and somewhat unique, making the story a compelling and entertaining read. Merrick’s persistence to convince Trina to be with him balances out the single-minded devotion she has of putting everyone else’s safety before her own. Everything is wrapped up nicely at the end, and there is potential for other stories set in the world created.

In BloodSworn, we meet Trina Weyebridge, one of the most powerful, most feared type of witch, and the last of her line. She's a BloodSworn witch whose magic comes from her blood. As powerful as this type of witch is, Trina doesn't practice magic. Her powers were bound for her protection ten years ago. Since then she's been living her life in the human world as a hematologist. However, things are about to change. Vampires have kidnapped her sister and she'll do anything to get her back.
The war between vampires and shifters had ended one hundred and fifty years ago with a shaky truce that neither race would encroach on the other's territory.

Witches were little threat to the pack, but something about their magic disturbed the virus that kept vampires alive. Vampires and witches had hunted each other fanatically for centuries. The only thing that stopped an out-right war between the races was the pack's pledge to keep the peace.
I enjoyed this world that Stacey Brutger created. Vampires are not seductive or sparkly. They, along with the witches, are the bad guys in this novel. The shifters play an integral part in this world and keep the peace. Merrick, the Leo, was my favorite character. I also liked Merrick, Trina's protector. I was intrigued by the power and history of the BloodSworn. This would make a good series and, if the author chooses to write more in this world, I would definitely read it.

BloodSworn begins with Trina hiding from the Vampires on the Shifters place. She thinks this will be the best place for her till she can figure out how to get her sister back from the vamps. The only problem is the lead Shifter knows exactly where she is, and he wants something from her. Something she may not even be sure she can give. But when it comes time for her fight or flight, she picks to fight no matter how dangerous it is for her.

This book was okay. It was as great as the other books I've read by this author, but it was still an interesting read. I think the problem I had with was I couldn't really connect with the characters, and I wish there had been a little more emotion and explanations between the hero and heroine. Other then that it was a nice Urban Fantasy to pass the time with.

3.5 stars. I wanted to love this book I really did. It started off so well with a great story line and interesting characters. The main characters meet and get to slowly know each other and then it's a rush to finish the book. All the character and relationship building is thrown out the window for danger and insentient soul deep love. I wouldn't be as disappointed if there hadn't been so much promise. So much more could've been done to build the world, including dynamics btw shifters, witches, vampires and relationships. There was enough material for at least 2 books if not 3. With everything crammed in the last bit of the book the ending falls a little flat and sudden. I might read another book by this author she has great ideas.

While this book was good, I wasn't wowed. Their devotion to one another was pretty cool. So was the fact that she hid herself so well while keeping her job. Well, before she officially met Merrick. CreedMark and the talk of scepters was different. A good different, but I don't feel as if I was given enough information to form too much of an opinion besides that both are rather bad to have/be. All in all the book did keep me reading.

I really enjoyed this book and won't hesitate to see what else this author has. I picked it up on a whim and boy am I glad I did. The pace was excellent and the action kept me engaged. The main characters were both likeable and strong. The romance was slow but I enjoyed it more than the typical I found my mate followed very quickly by sex. The secondary characters were entertaining and I look forward to more books in this series.

Fantastic complex story

The introduction to the plot is stellar. You get a wonderful view of Merrick and his world before Trina ever appears. Being the last blood witch is complicated by witches, shifters, and vampires. The author pulls quite a few strings into a well woven story r y that delivers. It was also great to have a complete story, no cliffhanger!

it almost was a DNF book. Not through any fault of the book per say. I just stop caring at some point. The writing just didn't do it for me and i found my self loosing interest in the storyline...alot. but if you are looking for a romantic read with shifters, witches, and vampires this is the book for you.

This is one hell of a action-packed and adrenaline-pumping novel! It's different from the other witches novel out there. It has actions, romance, conflicts and a lots of unexpected things. It keeps me on my toes while reading. This one is a surprisingly very good standalone. Definitely a keeper! :)

Bloodsworn is an entertaining story with engaging characters. As with a lot of e books, there were some proofreading issues, but they were not severe enough to detract from a good story.
