Rylie Gresham has enjoyed two peaceful years as Alpha of the last werewolf pack in existence. But she's feeling kind of confused. Her boyfriend, Seth, has been away at college, and her feelings for his brother, Abel, have been growing as they run the pack together.
Everything gets a lot more complicated when someone sends her a silver bullet and a threatening message. It throws her into a deadly battle with enemies old and new, which is only slightly less perilous than the battle inside her heart. Sooner or later, she's going to have to choose: will she marry Seth, or follow her feelings for Abel?
This is a collection of the first four episodes of The Cain Chronicles: New Moon Summer, Blood Moon Harvest, Moon of the Terrible and Red Rose Moon. If you've read episodes 1 to 4 before, there's nothing new here.
Hi everyone! My name is Sara, and I write urban fantasy and paranormal novels as SM Reine. I collect swords, cat hair, and typewriters (which I do use for writing!). It's a good day when those three things have nothing to do with each other.
If you would like to know the instant my next book is available, you should enlist in my Army of Evil! We have a wicked cool secret handshake, but you'll have to sign up to learn it. ;) Check it out -- http://smarturl.it/armyofevil
I like this series, love Reine's Rylie Gresham character. But The Caine Chronicles is a soap opera with werewolves, and like in her first "Seasons of the Moon" series Reine leaves no cliché untouched, only this time, because of the shorter length of each instalment, they come at you that much faster. If you consider yourself a fan of TV-Tropes, or generally enjoy the hilarity of a good soap, then this is the perfect read for you. We've got the surprise relatives, we've got "I'm in love with my brother's fiancée", we've got several returns from the dead, we've got... well, whatever you can think of, I'm pretty sure Reine got it covered in The Cain Chronicles - all it lacks is Bobby under the shower, but hey there's still Darkmoon, right?
The writing is not always up there and she developed a like for using "off of" which can get a little irritating at times (in the third part Blood Moon Harvest you see that one used on every second page or so).
Favourite sentence: "She was a tall, elegant woman with strawberry-blond hair that had never been very friendly, although she managed a small smile for Rylie."
It is a good read. Nice continuation of Rylie, Seth and Abel. I thought it was 4 books but it isn't its 4 parts in one book and some of those parts are very short. Still a good read and value for money.
I am in love with the way this book was written, in four parts, not books. When I started reading this novel, I went in with the intention of a quick read. I recently finished re-reading the ACOTAR series, and wasn’t ready for the commitment needed to ‘falling’ for a new series. That is why each part (although short and sweet) was rich in important detail, rather than unnecessary plot twists or extra’s. In general though, the storyline for this series is an okay one, but one built solely on cliches. I’m going to confess it myself here but I was kind of hoping for a short, easy read novel, yet one that is action packed and enriched in twists and turns.
I enjoyed this twist on the cain/able theory. The series itself started off somewhere else for me. I bought a box set with one of the other books in it and I can't even figure out where to go next. I know dark moon, but it is not easy to find these books. I haven't decided if I should put in more effort. I enjoy the story and characters, but they are super short. This one was 4 books, but could have easily been released as 1 book. Not enough happens for me in each "book" to want to actually pay for them.
I accidentally read the second set before this first one. It was still fun though. Maybe even more fun as I knew what was ahead. Admittedly, I probably would have got more out if I had read in correct order. I'm just getting into werewolf folklore & stories and this series is a great introduction to one view of how werewolves came to be. The terror one must feel is very well conveyed. I've been motivated to start reading other series of S.M. Reine.
The Cain chronicles 1-4 kept me interested the entire time of reading them. I still love the characters but Rylie is supposed to be the alpha yet she came across more weak willed in this series. Loved the ending and of course I am ordering the next book because of that cliffhanger.
Interesting story and characters. I always enjoy S.M.Reine books. Excellent imagination, really pulls you in. And the stories cross over into other series by the same author.
That last line! Man, oh man! I almost swooned! Nah, but my heart really did skip a beat. Abel's last words in Red Rose Moon...well that just did it for me. Hawt!
I got to the 3rd in this series and then just lost interest. That just sums it up, 1 girl, 2 brothers and a wolf pack, it had more potential than this, IMO.
I gave this 4 stars for 2 reasons, one because it consists of four books or novellas that had been published already and it does not contain book five which may wrap up this series. Rylie is the female alpha of the werewolf pack and working to get them settled into a new home where hopefully they will be safe. Seth, the boy she loves is in school and Able, his brother is with her and is the quasi co-alpha. Rylie has mixed feelings about Abel and goes looking for Seth who has left school and is looking for someone or something. After finding Seth, she and Seth are taken prisoner by Eleanor, Seth and Abel's mother who Rylie though she had already killed and find a step-brother Cain who seems determined to kill all the werewolves. A added problem is Rylie thinks she is pregnant and while Seth is the only one she is sure she has had sex with, she is not sure if anything happened while she and Abel were in their wolf forms.
While the story was good with some plot twists, it was a bit jerky and would have been better with book five included but still a good read with an interesting cliff hanger at the end of book 4.
New Moon Summer by S.M. Reine is an excellent beginning to a promising series. I love the characters and how Reine has stuck to the legends behind werwolves. This is one of the better were books that I have read. Diving right into book 2. Blood Moon Harvest by S.M. Reine is the second episode in the Cain Chronicles. The groundwork was laid in book 1, so book 2 is very exciting and action packed. I really enjoy how these characters have grown together. Moon of the Terrible by S.M. Reine is the third book in the Cain Chronicles. It is very well written with and exciting story line. As Alpha, Rylie must learn to be a bit stronger, but she remains more nurturing. The suspense and intrigue is woven intricately through the characters. Whom shall they trust? In Red Rose Moon by S.M. Reine, the fourth book in the Cain Chronicles, we learn that blood is not thicker than water and emotions are full of betrayal. The best episode thus far, this book finally explains the odd prologue from book 1. Having read them all back to back, I must say...Oh, the cliffhanger!
these are just way too short to be fully satisfying. i guess it makes sense that the're called episodes as opposed to books, because they're definitely not book-length. this series is just as utterly readable as seasons of the moon with another level of the paranormal thrown into the mix as a certain well-hated character comes into play along with the mysterious cain.
i love the dichotomy of seth and abel. seth, the golden boy, the kopis, the well-educated, well-connected brother. and abel, the damaged, unloved loner who feels everything perhaps a bit too fiercely. they're complete opposites and both perfect matches to the two sides of rylie. i almost don't want to read more because i don't want her to inevitably have to choose.
i do wish the author delved deeper into the minds/thoughts of the main characters. there is a lot of entertaining action and fight scenes (which i admittedly am not complaining about); i just wish i knew more about what everyone was thinking.
Another great work by S.M. Reine. I love her characters and stories. It was fun to go back and see Rylie, Seth and Abel. I find their evolving relationships so intriguing. They can't live with modern societies rules of love. Two Alpha werewolves and a Kopic. Two brothers and the girl of their dreams. Human needs versus werewolf needs. A little polyamory needs to play out.
I keep trying to write this review on this batch of episodes but I am already reading book number five. I just couldn't stop reading at the end of this four book box set.
Check out the Seasons of the Moon series first. The Cain Chronicles just gives us more time with the same cast of characters. Who doesn't love to spend time with friends? Now, can I get back to book five? I am 67% into it and enjoying it thoroughly. :-)
Good book, open ended I wanted to know what happened when Seth found out that Rylie was pregnant. Crazy how they found out that Cain was his brother and he savaged the sanctuary, and The Union more than half of the men turned on them and was working for Cain. Rylie was having issues controlling her inner wolf when Seth was away at school and had not been back to see her in a while. Even though they always wrote letters back and forth it wasn't enough for emotional balance she craved his touch. Seth and Rylie prepared for a wedding after Seth returned from school weeks later. The wedding didn't completely take place because bad company had arrived and a fight had definitely took place. But after the fight the wedding gazebo was trashed and they still had there marriage license, but Steth also found out Rylie was pregnant.
I wish that I could say I had liked these better, but sadly I did not. They came with such great reviews from hardcore S.M. Reine followers, but I found them hard to get into. They are fast paced, but I feel like they are almost too fast paced for the reader to get a good feel for any of the characters. In the author's defense, I did not read the series that came before this one and that surely introduces these characters a bit more. However, there is a final book to this series and I felt no need to read it based off of reading these because I frankly just never became attached to the characters. If you are a hardcore werewolf or S.M. Reine fan, these might do it for you...but I just wasn't digging them.
I didn't realize Seasons of the Moon was a series that came before this one. I wish I had read that series 1st. That being said: I really really liked it! The very beginning of the first book kind of bugged me because I felt like there was a lot of skipping around and trying to hurry and cram in details from the past of the characters lives. However, once that was done and the book really got underway I really liked the rest of it. Each of the episodes is like a really short novella, But when you read them all together like this it winds up just being a short book. Really good. I can't wait to continue the story!
Loved these books! I have to admit that each episode was a bit shorter than I expected but other than that I was very pleased with this set. I love how all of her books fit together in some way. I find it very easy to connect with her characters even though the stories aren't written in the first person like I usually prefer. I just bought this set 2 days ago and just finished it a few minutes ago. But between finishing it and writing this review I've already purchased the next book in the series and can't wait to get started!
