Troyat was a French author, biographer, historian and novelist.
Troyat was born Levon Aslan Torossian in Moscow to parents of Armenian descent. His family fled Russia in anticipation of the revolution. After a long exodus taking them to the Caucasus on to Crimea and later by sea to Constantinople and then Venice, the family finally settled in Paris in 1920, where young Troyat was schooled and later earned a law degree. The stirring and tragic events of this flight across half of Europe are vividly recounted by Troyat in 'Tant que la terre durera'.
Troyat received his first literary award, Le prix du roman populaire, at the age of twenty-four, and by twenty-seven, he was awarded the Prix Goncourt.
Troyat published more than 100 books, novels and biographies, among them those of Anton Chekhov, Catherine the Great, Rasputin, Ivan the Terrible and Leo Tolstoy.
Troyat's best-known work is La neige en deuil, which was adapted as an English-language film in 1956 under the title The Mountain.
He was elected as a member of the Académie française in 1959. At the time of his death, Troyat was the longest serving member of the Academy.
Here is the finished trilogy since I read it out of order. In this second volume, Henri Troyat deepens the relations between the members of the Eygletière family and brings out the temperaments of each of them. I would have had a better reading of Henri Troyat, but I enjoyed his incisive descriptions and analyses. That's a good "photo" from the 60s.
J'ai pris ce bouquin dans une boite à livres, au hasard; c'était une édition (originale?) de 1966 et malgré les pages jaunies et gondolées, j'ai eu grand plaisir à tenir en main et feuilleter ce reliquat physique des années soixante, et d’y lire le feuilleton d’une famille contemporaine de cette époque. Et c’est un feuilleton sans sentimentalité ni message moralisateur ; les personnages sont froidement observés et présentés comme ils sont et comme ils agissent, au sein d’une dynamique familiale complexe. La dissection de cette famille bourgeoise est parfois acerbe mais je l’ai trouvée assez fascinante, un peu comme un film de C. Chabrol (toujours une référence !) de la même période.
Deuxième tome d’une trilogie ; si les autres volumes ne me tombent pas dans les mains comme celle-ci, je serais peut-être obligée de les rechercher un peu plus activement !
Le second épisode d'une trilogie. Mais se lit sans difficulté de compréhension. Comment une famille vole en éclat. Un sujet dont Troyat raffole. Superficiel mais délassant.
my lovely book, lovely characters. but in this part of book all is changing.. and I don't like it. Reading Challenge:book somewhere I always want to visit. France ^^
Well this book wasn't something remarkable for me . It started ok similar to "Rich man ,Poor man" which is one of my favorite novels, but then in one moment the characters were sooo lost . And not in the good way . They didn't have one true emotion . It was all fake and more and more without sense .I want to know what happens next and i will read the next book of the series but i don't think i will like it much .
В этой части рассказывается о начале взрослой жизни Эглетьеров младших. "Это львята, жестокие, упрямые, безжалостные, эгоистичные! Они голодны, и у них жажда, им не терпится жить... Ничто другое для них не имеет значения!" Еще понравилась цитата: "Он никогда не думал, что предметы, столь дорогие для него, так мало значили для других. Вероятно, и в любви так же!". Интересно, что ждет Эглетьеров в заключительный части? Воскрешение через падение, как говорил Козлов?
