Troyat was born Levon Aslan Torossian in Moscow to parents of Armenian descent. His family fled Russia in anticipation of the revolution. After a long exodus taking them to the Caucasus on to Crimea and later by sea to Constantinople and then Venice, the family finally settled in Paris in 1920, where young Troyat was schooled and later earned a law degree. The stirring and tragic events of this flight across half of Europe are vividly recounted by Troyat in 'Tant que la terre durera'.
Troyat received his first literary award, Le prix du roman populaire, at the age of twenty-four, and by twenty-seven, he was awarded the Prix Goncourt.
Troyat published more than 100 books, novels and biographies, among them those of Anton Chekhov, Catherine the Great, Rasputin, Ivan the Terrible and Leo Tolstoy.
Troyat's best-known work is La neige en deuil, which was adapted as an English-language film in 1956 under the title The Mountain.
He was elected as a member of the Académie française in 1959. At the time of his death, Troyat was the longest serving member of the Academy.

Henri Troyat is an author whom I discovered a few years ago.
This time, Henri Troyat takes us into a family trilogy set in the 1960s in France, mainly in Paris.
The patriarch and father of the family, Philippe Eygletiere, is the most detestable character in this story.
He preaches for infidelity (only male, of course) and has no qualms about imposing his way of seeing on his family, whether towards Carole, his second wife, or his eldest son, Jean-Marc.
His authoritarianism and selfishness prevent him from truly knowing and being interested in his children and their respective lives, as well as their true personal or professional aspirations. His wife, Carole, seems mainly relegated to the role of figurehead.
I continue to appreciate the writing of this prolific author, and I will probably read the third volume quite quickly to learn what will happen to the Eygletieres.

Не успя да ми въздейства силно и да ме завладее. Даже ми действаше депресиращо. Да, наистина се случва така живота, в голямата си част, но харесвам отпимистичната му половина. Иска ми се да вярвам, че има такава и не преставам да вярвам. И това огромно самочувствие на мъжката половина от света ( на голяма част от него) , че е солта на живота , определено ме дразни . Ще се опитам , да прочета и другите части.

Когато четох за първи път тази книга бях ученик. Желязната завеса още съществуваше, Франция беше по-далече от Луната, героите бяха много възрастни за мен.
Сега е различно - дъщеря ми учи във Франция и цялата тази описана схема на образованието ми е позната добре. Обикалях Париж и вече разбирам къде ходят героите... А и съм малко по-възрастен от старият Ейглетиер.
За сметка на това имах тия луди връзки с 12-13 години разлика.
Сега книгата ми звучи по различен начин.
Ще напиша едно общо ревю като изчета трилогията, но книгата наистина е много добра...

Διάβασα την ελληνική έκδοση, Εκδόσεις Ερμείας, μετάφραση Ειρήνη Μπουζάλη.
Παρόλο που η μετάφραση περιέχει λέξεις και εκφράσεις που δεν χρησιμοποιούνται πια και η ορθογραφία είναι της εποχής του '60 ή και παλαιότερη, το αριστούργημα δεν μπορεί να κρυφτεί, δεν μπορεί να καταστραφεί, είναι εκεί και λάμπει και φαίνεται και φωτίζει.
Παρόλο που η μετάφραση περιέχει λέξεις και εκφράσεις που δεν χρησιμοποιούνται πια και η ορθογραφία είναι της εποχής του '60 ή και παλαιότερη, το αριστούργημα δεν μπορεί να κρυφτεί, δεν μπορεί να καταστραφεί, είναι εκεί και λάμπει και φαίνεται και φωτίζει.

Les premières pages ont suscité chez moi un certain inconfort. L’histoire a été écrite et se déroule dans les années 60. A travers le regard des différents protagonistes on s’imprègne de la culture française bourgeoise de l’époque, qui véhicule certaines valeurs et positions très éloignées de celles qui sont revendiquées aujourd’hui. Par moments, j’ai eu le sentiment que certaines opinions très tranchées exprimées par les personnages (et qui seraient considérées comme peu peu recevables aujourd’hui) reflétaient celles de l’auteur. Finalement, passé ce sentiment de décalage inconfortable, observer ce tableau du monde d’il y a plus de 60 ans permet de mettre en perspective certaines frictions générationnelles.
Au fil des chapitres, je me suis attachée à cette galerie de personnages et ai été emportée par la finesse avec laquelle leurs relations sont dépeintes.

Le début d'une trilogie incroyable! Réaliste, profond, émouvant. Très bien écrit. On a tellement envie de visiter "le" Paris de cette époque-là... J'adore cet auteur! Un des meilleurs dans la littérature française du XX siècle.
