Based on the popular TV mini-series ‘Tales from Te Papa”, ‘100 Amazing tales from Aotearoa’ is a behind-the-scenes glimpse at 100 treasured items from the collections of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
Thoroughly entertaining and informative, the book illustrates some of the more quirky, precious, exceptional and downright bizarre objects that Te Papa holds. Fashion, jewellery, masks, weapons, fossils, instruments, medicines, toys, dolls and artworks – not to mention ‘Doodads and Doodahs’ are just some of the items that are featured.
My favourite treasure is the collection of “Stars” from the Play School television series – there’s Humpty, Big Ted, Manu and Jemima. But where’s Little Ted? Well rumour has it ‘that during Play School’s last day of filming, somebody decided to blow Little Ted up’. According to ‘100 Amazing tales from Aotearoa’, a headless Little Ted now resides in the Otago Settlers Museum. A little-known fact that isn’t mentioned in the book is that the original Play School clock is right here in the Invercargill Public Library, available to view in the Research Room on the first floor.
An excellent read ‘100 Amazing tales” also includes the DVDs of the TV series. Bonus!
