Elemental Clans #1

Water's Blood

Rate this book
Nature’s Elementals—Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water—have lived for countless millennia. Disguised as humans, they are charged with one mission: protect the innocent from fallen angel clans, who reap human souls and force them to do their bidding.

Brooke, a Water Elemental stationed in New Orleans, broke the rules once—she mated with a human. For her indiscretion, she is forbidden to share a life with her loved ones: NOPD officer Alex and their half-breed daughter, Ella.

Now Ella is about to turn sixteen, and the local clan of fallen angels is determined to snare her soul by Halloween.

Brooke broke the rules once by allowing love to interfere with her mission. Now she and Alex must put consequences aside to break the rules again—if they wish to save their daughter’s soul.

Walking the New Orleans streets, the Elementals search for the Minare, the Fallen Angels, but Brooke, a Water Elemental has an even more important mission of her own, to save her human family, and everything about the book made me want to read it, though, I did have some trouble with Ella, until I let my mind go and the fantasy take me where it will.

~1.5 stars~

I'm going to round this review up to a 2 star since it was offered as a freebie. My main problem with this book was that it was unnecessarily long. There was an abundance of detail to things that really had no relevance, whereas, issues of importance were lacking. It would have been nice to have some backstory on the hero and heroine. We are just thrown into the beginning of the story with this couple who had a child about to turn 16. The dad raised her and the mother had to stay away. I had no depth to the hero and heroines connection or their relationship. There were also some very slow spells in the plot. There were numerous times I thought about declaring this one a DNF but I stuck it out. Wish I wouldn't have. The story idea sounded intriguing and had potential but the execution of it ruined this read for me personally.

I dont know how I stumbled across this book; surely though it was a good thing with no question of doubt.
This is the first novel in a series of books from a young author, dealing with Nature Elementals and a group of Fallen Angels based around New Orleans; famous for Anne Rices 'Interview with a Vampire', the city really is brought to life through this captivating story, and what I found the most enticing aspect of Elaine Calloways tale is her description of this old and mysterious City (not to mention the food she describes).

Great book. I feel honored that I stumbled across it and am eagerly awaiting the other books in this trilogy. Recommended.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the “Lovers of Paranormal” Group on Goodreads.com

This an enjoyable story that I think young adults will like. The story itself didn't offer anything new in the fantasy/paranormal genre. The characters were likeable enough but I didn't feel a connection with any of them. Ella's character showed absolutely no common sense which made the story less believable. I also think Alex should have been there for his daughter and not worrying about his job, this didn't make any sense to me. There seemed to be some inconsistency to the plot which distracted me a little. All in all, this is a good book for young adult readers.

Rarely do I have a tear in my eye at the end of a book, however this is one that made it happen. It's a story about family, love, struggle, and sacrifice as well as repentance and domination. This author brought in the flavor and flair of NO very well in the locations and cuisine as well as the heart of the characters.

A daughter struggles to find answers to who her mother is. A father struggles to raise a daughter on his own, who is now a teenager and this is causing a new kind of problems. A mother struggles to sit on the sidelines and watch her daughter grow up without being able to tell her who she really is. Good struggles to overcome evil. Evil struggles to overthrow good once and for all. Yet through all the struggles unforseen allegiances take place and the life of life and family fights to take a strong stand.

This book has so much flavor and richness that I will definitely read it again!

"Your daughter is in danger. You have to go."

"Your mother is a special creature."

"Good, the holy water was working."

"He could scan a new place and sense what didn't belong in seconds, a rare trait that spiked her attraction to him. Along with those piercing green eyes that could penetrate her soul."

"You should've known you couldn't hang out together. You're wishing for a life you'll never have."

"Seems everything I do, despite intention, is an exercise on futility."

"Brooke paused to amour a task of community fish. Different species and breeds, yet they all co-existed, each true to their nature without wiping out the other. If only her own life could be that simple."

"It hasn't been a walk on the park, truth be told, I can't imagine living anyone else."

"How could something this perfect be wrong?"

"The human heart is always seeking it's own truth."

"It's hard living amongst humanity with no end in sight,"

"Alex swallowed hard, attempting to get rid of the large knot in the back of his throat. Her shape words pierced his heart."

"May your true talents continue to reign, in this world and the next."

"Every choice we make counts."

"That asinine dictator Soren had no right to barge in and ruin Ella's life. Not now. not ever."

"Where food you send him? Soren gave a mischievous smile. Antarctica. Freezing his ass off while smelling penguin shit should change (character's) tune in no time."

"You can do this. Step up and finish what you started."

"Giggling blondes and brunettes dances around him, like snakes charmed by a flute."

"I'd say we're made for each other, Five-O."

"Enjoy yourself while you can. Besides, tomorrow is your birthday. Love a little. You're long overdue."

"There has definitely been a gleam in those yellow beady eyes."

"Look out, children. Tonight, the wyld is coming out to play."

"Please believe me. I would do anything to protect you."

"Thank you for the best thing in life-family."

"You're in for the adventure of your life."

Fantastic setting, the author clearly knows New Orleans well and evokes the atmosphere and flavour of the culture (and cuisine!) really well.
Brooke, a water elemental, has disobeyed the rules and fallen in love with a human - a NOPD cop, Alex - and produced a child. At the age of sixteen, that child, Ella, can make a choice: Elemental or human.
The Elementals are locked in a never-ending war with the Fallen Angels, and the clan chief in NO, Soren, has designs on Ella's soul.
The characters are well drawn, particularly Ella, who comes across as a typical rebellious teenager (not without cause), and also Alex, her human father who must raise her alone, as Brooke is not allowed to reveal her relationship to Ella.
Once Soren, using his tasty-looking minion Dominick, lures Ella away from the safety of her family, the ensuing search and battle race around this colourful city, and involve Elementals of all four varieties, latterly revealing a secret that may give Brooke the family life she has always desired - but only if they can save Ella and banish Soren before Ella's sixteenth birthday - the day after Halloween, when Soren is at his most powerful.
Why not 5 stars? I just found the Elementals and the Fallen Angels a little too human with extras bolted on, and there were a few typos (missing speech marks for the most part) that jarred, and a couple of formatting issues on my Kindle Fire (no chapter breaks).
But overall the story carried me along and I really liked the very individual characters and the great dialogue, so I would certainly recommend it to UF/paranormal romance lovers.

I received this book from LOP in exchange for my honest review. It took me a little bit to get into this story, but once I did boy was I hooked. This story set in New Orleans in which the author gives such good descriptions of the town and surroundings you can actually picture being there, the details were absolutely amazing. While reading this book I found myself smitten Cristos a fallen angel, who I just rooted for to do good and turn away from evil. As the story begins we meet Brooke a water elemental who feel in love with a human Alex which is forbidden by Universe. Together they have a half human half water elemental child Ella, who Brooke is forced to watch grow up from afar because Universe doesn't allow contact with her child, but with fallen angels reaping souls and the clan leader Soran coming back into the picture Brooke must fight to keep her daughter safe. Ella complete with your typical teenaged angst, is lead astray by Dominick a soldier under Soran's command. Ella who is happy to finally get to experience life is unable to comprehend what is so wrong with being with Dominick, until it is to late. I loved all the detail in this book especially describing the elementals and fallen angels. I loved it and recommend this book to anyone who loves a good paranormal story.

**** ARC received in exchange for review with group lop ****

This is the first book in the series and let me tell you it is definitely worth reading. I love books about heaven and hell, angels and demons. And honestly i did not know that what this book was about until i started reading it. Maybe i should have read the summary of the book but i thought 'hey lets try it good or bad' that's the beauty of reading ARCs you never know what books you'll come across rather than reading whats 'hot'.

So this book follows Brooke the water elemental in New Orleans, LA. She is desperately trying to keep it together and NOT tell her daughter who she is and what she is. While fighting the good fight and trying to keep the balance of good and evil afloat she deals with co workers who have a stick up their butt and a love she cannot have. I enjoyed every second of this book and was excited to read the second book. I have review it too and plan on reading the next 2 or so books!

This is a really good book and i recommend it for sure!

Happy Reading :)

Great characters, intriguing setting, loved the story. My only complaint is the book was much too long and I found myself skimming a number of sections, antsy to get this one over with near the end. I also wished some of the magic would have been delved into more.

Ok

Story plot is different but was lacking. I could not get into the characters and details were missing. Some was repetitive and world building seemed to only focus on some streets and restaurants of New Orleans. The powerful Elementals were not really that powerful and the main villain was not that plausible. I would have purchased the entire series if this would have been better. The covers are gorgeous! Ok read. Hope the author does a redo since the plot has possibilities.

I want to preface this review with I knew this author on Twitter before she published this series, and as a result of "following" her for some time, I was interested in her series The Elementals. I like supernatural/fantasy/gothic tales. Also, the fabulously large and striking cover drew my interest.

The book was designed as an ebook but as I prefered a print version, I asked for a signed print copy which I purchased directly from the author. The volume is very thick but it isn't formatted as a print version would be and the margins are overlarge. Pages also aren't numbered on this first book, again because it was set up to be traveled by chapter links in an ebook. This is understood and neither of these things has any bearing on my review.

In the first book of a series, our young author Calloway introduces us to The Elementals, a race of supernatural beings that have been placed into human forms. They are true elementals in that they control air, water, earth and fire. Our water elemental, Brooke, has been placed in New Orleans to watch over the humans and protect them from The Fallen Angels or the Minare. The tricky part of Brooke's assignment is that her human lover and her child are in NOLA and her daughter is about to "come of age." Will she become like Brooke or will she be human like her father? The daughter is getting rebellious and curious; worse, the Minare have found her too and want her to join them. The question is can Brooke do her job, save her daughter, protect her beloved and her city before the Minare manage to bring it all down around her? Brooke is going to need help and so she calls on her friends, the other Elementals....

As the first in a series, the tale takes time to build as we are introduced to all the players. This is always the case with a multi-arc, multi-character series and we all understand how it works. I commend Calloway on taking care of these details with smooth expeditiousness. The story never lags or feels rushed but we are led quickly through the more mundane details and until we find ourselves completely immersed in the actual tale.

There are no distracting subplots taking away from this original story. Though I often like a more complicated tale, this story is original enough to hold my attention. The idea of human elementals battling The Fallen is new to me, and I liked Calloway's approach to her subject.

The writing is tight, dialogue good. Toward the end, I sensed a bit of filler but overall the story carries well. The ending is a predictable but there was a huge surprise before the end! Because of this I completely forgive the author for the pat ending. I love being surprised and this is hard to do.

I'm always a bit harsher on the first book of a series but I have already purchased the second in the series, Raging Fire. This is a good sign that I am committed to the work; I will look forward to continuing this series by this up-and-coming-author.

I didn't like the PG13 of the book. But all the action and nonstop of all the characters was a delight.

Water's Blood (The Elemental Clans #1) by Elaine Calloway

Water's Blood (The Elemental Clans #1) by Elaine Calloway tells about Brooke, who is a water elemental and Alex, a human who end up having a child named Ella. They live in New Orleans where Brooke is the owner and bartender of a neighborhood bar, and Alex is a cop for the New Orleans Police Department. It is Brooke’s job as an elemental to protect humans from the Fallen Angels of Minare. It is against the elementals laws to have a relationship with humans and having a child is forbidden. Brooke was then punished by her boss, Universe and she was not allowed to be around and live with her family. The head of the Minare Fallen Angels, Soren, returns to New Orleans and has plans to take over the area and get back at Brooke for ruining his plans for a takeover he planned years ago. Brooke and other Elementals need to thwart his plans. All the while, Brooke works with Alex to find and get their daughter away from Soren and the Fallen Angels of Minare.

The reader is introduced to the world of Fallen Angels and Elementals in this first book of the series. The beginning of the book throws the reader right into the action and drama. The story builds slowly but this allows the reader to better understand the world of elementals and the Fallen Angels of Minare.

The characters are well rounded and have their own unique voices. Thanks to the author’s impressive writing style, you realize the tremendous amount of love that Alex and Brooke have for each other as well as their daughter throughout the book. Calloway even makes the villain of the story, Soren look good in an evil way. Calloway has given each of her characters a uniqueness that helps the story come alive for the reader.

The storyline is very good and flows nicely. I think that the authors writing style and her unique ability to fill her characters with such appeal enables the reader to immerse themselves into the story and it also allows the reader to appreciate the story more on an emotional level.

The only problem that I found with the book was the page length. I felt it could use just a bit of editing. However, even with it being 500+ pages, the story goes by quickly.

Water’s Blood is a great start to this series and I can’t wait to read about Phoenix, the Fire Elemental in Raging Fire.

The story is told from multiple, or variable, third-person point of view, as the perspective shifts among the characters with each chapter. It's done well, and wasn't as disruptive, for me, as when that's done in first-person. I also appreciate that the chapters were short, and thus easy to read between doing too many things in my very busy week.

In many cultures and religions, iron is something that keeps evil at bay; in this book, the Fallen Angels/ Minare draw strength from black iron. It amused me that "sinners smell like rum and honey."

The character I had trouble connecting with and understanding was Alex. He's mentioned as a great father and cop time and again. But, when he knows his daughter is missing, he stops for a couple of beers and a nap, as figuring out what to do can wait until morning. The book even states that Ella feels like her dad had forgotten about her. Ella stayed with her best friend, but Alex didn't stop there to pick her up (or even check if she was there), just went to the bar where Brooke works. Alex does later think he can handle a search for his own kid. And he tells her he never stopped scavenging the streets trying to find her.

I'm curious why "heaven" and sometimes "hell," as locations, weren't capitalized as proper nouns?
There was also a possible inconsistency where Cristos is punched in the face, then goes hoarse from being punched... in the gut? If the punch landed wrong, I missed it.

I was surprised how many song lyrics were used in the book. It's an especially gray area of copyright law in which few authors dare to venture.

Brad Pitt in New Orleans! I felt the setting was well-developed and expertly woven throughout the story.

Good use of the title in the story, which is something I always appreciate.

A part that made me laugh:
It took him a moment to remember his pseudonym. How did authors do it so well? Half the time he couldn't remember what name to answer to.

It's nice to see Mercury as the messenger. I wonder if in the next book, where a preview indicated a certain Elemental becomes an EMT, if anyone will remark on the caduceus frequently being used as a symbol of medicine instead of the Rod of Asclepius?

Water's Blood takes you through the streets of New Orleans, giving you the feel and vibe of a one of a kind city even if you've never been yourself. Author Elaine Calloway clearly knows her way around.
She also knows her way around keeping people real. Yes, her Elementals are super-natural beings but they're a lot like the rest of us. When's the last time any of us read a paranormal where the hero/es weren't something so far ahead of humanity that we couldn't relate if we had to. I found it immensely refreshing to read about character's who didn't ooze unique powers every other scene. The character's of Water's Blood have their gifts, their limitations, and have to function all too often the way we mere mortals have to.
This story wove together a number of story lines (paranormal, family, young teen, romance, contemporary) in a way that makes most publishers nervous. They simply don't know what shelf to put it on. My Kindle doesn't care about shelves. And I find I like the new feel this book evokes. Until you step out of the easily labeled genres, you don't realize how much feels predictable.
Three elements to go. Here's to keeping us guessing.

This is a surprisingly great book.
It's different, interesting, and just a cool book.
It may be over 500 pages but I hardly noticed. I flew through this book a weekend.
And the great is, Calloway created characters that brought out emotions in me.
They were more then just blah characters.
While I disliked Ella and sometimes even Brooke, Calloway also created a few characters that I liked and even rooted for though out the book.
The whole book takes place in a month but it wasn't slow. It was fast paced when it needed to be and calm in between.
However, the whole snake thing was kind of confusing and weird.
And it sucks that the Elementals can't use even a little of their power and not get weak. Sometimes it was just like were humans.
But I did like the concept of the Elementals.

Over all, Water's Blood is a fun read that is worth a weekend of your time.

I had a hard time with this one. Its a 2.5 for me. I really think the idea is great elementals that try to keep fallen angels in line. The book is about one elemental who broke the rules and an fallen angel that wants revenge set in New Orleans. What I didn't like was being thrown into a story line with no background information. It was hard to connect with the main character through out the entire book. I did like the side characters they were what kept the book going. The author also had two sets of couples that had the same conversations. Not cool to have them talking the same lines, acting the Same way. It was hard for me to finish this book. It seemed like with some polish it would be a decent story for a second or third book in the series. Though the last couple of chapters did finally give you some info, they were the best of the book in my opinion.

I was given this book to read along with its sequel, Raging Fire, in exchange for an honest review, Lovers of Paranormal.

I enjoyed this book. Elementals were new to me and I only wish they gave a bit more details of their skills. I have found that Fallen Angels differ depending on authors and there was a mixture of Angel personalities within this book.

One of my favourite characters was Cristos - a 'bad' Fallen Angel with principals. I hope to hear more of him in the next book. My least favourite character was Ella. I just felt she needed a slap or at least a wake up call. I am grateful that neither of my daughters were as obnoxious! :-). I look forward to her character development now she knows her own secrets.

A good read.....onto Raging Fire :-)

***I receive this book in exchange for an honest review from the Lovers of Paranormal Group on Goodreads.com***

The plot is not something most readers haven't read about but the characters itself is something new for me. It is a good book, but I felt the climax-towards the ending of the story was a little bit fast and too easy. There are moments I get so frustrated at Ella I just want to grab her and tell her the truth. A favorite character of mine is Cristos, he makes the story intriguing like you want to know more about him. All in all this book is nice to read and it's a book series as well making you want to know more about the characters.

I wasn't sure what to expect from a paranormal book, and I don't typically read in this genre. However, after the first ten pages, I was hooked and couldn't put the book down.

The Elementals were more like real people; it was easy to relate to them and their struggles. Same with the bad guys - the Fallen Angels. Instead of pure evil with no other traits, they had feelings and opinions too. I liked the way the book dealt with these issues, and good vs. evil.

I never read a book in two days' time, and this one I did. When I finished, I wanted to read the next one immediately!

I never given a one star rating before...

...So I am at a loss as to what I should say. I tried to give this book a chance, because I really love the cover. The funny part is the main character, doesn't even have blue eyes. I actually read the whole book too and it's long...like over 500 pages long.

Everything about this book is outlandish and hard to swallow. I had a lot of moments where I was like...

What?

Really?

Elemental magic vs Fallen angels

This is a story about magical forces saving humanity from fallen angels collecting souls. The beginning was a bit slow for me. Background on the elementals was a bit repetitious but, after that it was very good. When we get past the background it really is full of action, intrigue and twists. Just when you think you can figure out what's gonna happen, you are surprised with another twist.

This is a terrific debut novel. Set in New Orleans and peopled with drop-dead (literally) handsome Fallen Angels battling Brooke the Water Element for souls. Brooke can't hope to save the souls of seven-deadly sinners, but she can rescue the innocent. When the Fallen go after her own daughter, she and her forbidden lover, Alex, will stop at nothing to save her. Highly recommended.

Elaine Calloway writes of fallen angels and elementals with characters who you even love to hate.
I love how she creates three dimensional characters. I loved Phoenix, one of the cocky elementals in the story. A great plot too! I was glad to see there are more novels in this series. I am now a huge fan of Calloway! Loved the steamy setting of New Orlean's French Quarter.

Second, the bad guy's choices and motivates are very clear.
I did have one down fall I just can't do the whole snake thing.
