As the Sidhe--the fairies, thieves, tricksters, and changeling-bearers--begin to die at the hands of humans, Sidhe queen Scahta must find a King to save her people, and on Samhain Eve, she finds her perfect mate in Anlon, a man who possesses a soul of nobility, and who must pass many tests in order to win her love and become the king of her people as well as her heart. My writing career began in 1984 when I sold the first of over 100 non-fiction articles written for the national and regional horse magazines. A few years later, a friend and I decided to try our hand at novels. We wrote three and sold the third one, APRIL'S CHRISTMAS, to Avalon Books in 1994. My own first novel was LADY OF FIRE, a time-travel romance published by Leisure Books in 1996. I've always had a great interest in Ireland, history, horses and fantasy, and truly enjoy combining all these things in my novels. I am now working on SEVEN CASTLES IN IRELAND. "
Oh so very Oirish. Not a historical Ireland I know anything about, despite much research and a degree in History and Classical Civilization...
Scahta had me grinding my teeth several times, Scatha is the name and the legendary one would have handed several people their innards, after all she trained the Fianna (in Scotland it has to be admitted). Up until recently people left things for the Sidhe and I believe there are still people who do.
This is an Ireland without the numinous or respect for the numinous and it's not an Ireland I like to explore in my readings. This would have been better set in a fantasy world, not in a historical Ireland as it does it no service.
Actually, I'm DNFing this one. I managed to get through 3 books by this author and... I hit a point this AM where I just can't make myself read any more. Her "voice" does nothing for me, her characters are variously TSTL, abrasive, or both, and the underlying glorification of a time where there wasn't so much as an outhouse is grating. Am I really supposed to believe a pampered upperclass woman would be content, even happy, living like this? Seriously?
Anyway, that's my opinion. And making this decision is cathartic. I can now remove the other 4 books from my TBR pile.
Eire history of the sidhe fair folk. The fair folk are being killed because Man is taking all the food. The Queen needs a king to help her save the fair folk but will the man she chooses be able to unite the fair folk behind him and if he does will he then be able to make a truce with Man.
