After a fight over the family ranch, Dad's young fiancée is found dead. Bria risks her family's disapproval to sneak around and investigate as the tragedies pile up. Jessica Thompson is the author of the Amazon best-selling mystery novels “A Caterer’s Guide to Holidays and Homicide” and “A Caterer’s Guide to Love and Murder" which was a finalist in the Wishing Shelf Awards. She also curated and featured her own short stories in a family friendly anthology of campfire stories, "Beyond the Woods: A Supernatural Anthology." Active in her local writing community, she volunteers as the Assistant Communications Chair for the Storymakers Guild.
Jessica lives in the suburbs of Austin, Texas with her husband and two children. When not writing, she’s getting her boots dirty at her parents' nearby longhorn cattle ranch. Whether ranching, cooking, or gardening, she sees it all as plot-inspiring material for her next mystery.
Jessica Thompson has previously done very good “clockwork“ mysteries—intricate puzzles full of clues, timing and alibis. In this novel she adds the elements of emotion, passion, love and heartache, and she does it very well. I cared about the characters as much as I did about the story. The mystery, by the way, is every bit as good as her other work. A big step up for Jessica and a delight for her readers!
I liked this book a lot! The storyline almost reminded me of "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie. It isn't quite the same, but it definitely had elements of that story.
I loved the toxic family aspect of the story. And wow, there is so much death, like you don't really expect it. The mystery is in full force the entire book and I thought I knew who it was a couple times, but nope! I was wrong in the end, a sign of a good mystery.
I would like to read more of Jessica's work as I thought this book was very well done!
*Thankyou to the author for emailing me a copy to read and review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
4 stars!! I was really invested in reading this book. It was fast paced, and kept you wanting more. However it got really confusing when there were deaths one right after the other in such little time. It just felt too much to have so many characters die in only a few short chapters. It would have been great if there was some time in between, but I honestly didn't know who did it until the very end! It was a nice book and got me out of my regular comfort zone and for that it gets high praise.
It was a fantastic read from start to finish, I loved the who done it, I guessed wrong all the way through. I’m so pleased in how it ended as that’s what I wanted to happen. If you like murder mystery, intrigue, love, family drama, a bit of romance & a few deaths this is the book for you.
Thank you to the author for sending a copy of the book via Voracious Readers Only. This book grabbed me from the first page. Full of twists and unexpected turns, romance and murder, of course! What book isn't complete without not one or two murders but multiple murders, all set around the family cattle ranch.
A family of 10 soon starts to dwindle, and nobody knows who/how the murders are being done. It was an absolutely fantastic read with lots of strong females.
