"William Buhlman is America's leading expert on out-of-body experiences. The author's four decades of extensive personal out-of-body explorations give him a unique and thought provoking insight into this subject. His first book, Adventures beyond the Body chronicles his personal spiritual journey of self-discovery through out-of-body travel, and provides the reader with the preparation and techniques that can be used for their own adventure.
During the last ten years he has conducted an international out-of-body experience survey that includes over 18,000 participants from forty-two countries. The provocative results of this survey are presented in his book, The Secret of the Soul. This cutting edge book explores the unique opportunities for personal growth and profound spiritual awakenings that are experienced during out-of-body travel.

Over the past two decades William has developed a proven, effective system to experience safe, self initiated out-of-body adventures. He conducts an in-depth workshop with the Monroe Institute titled, Out-of-Body Exploration Intensive. This unique workshop provides the steps, intention and techniques designed for controlled out-of-body exploration. Each participant will experience a comprehensive array of proven OBE methods including the target technique, inner motion, visualization, chakra and energy body activation. In addition, hypnotic, shamanic and early morning methods will be practiced.

As a certified hypnotherapist, William incorporates various methods in his workshops to explore the profound nature of out-of-body experiences and the benefits of accelerated personal development. Through lectures, workshops and his books the author teaches the preparation and techniques of astral projection and spiritual exploration.

The author brings a refreshing look to how we can use out-of-body experiences to explore our spiritual identity and enhance our intellectual and physical lives. William is best known for his ability to teach people how to have profound spiritual adventures through the use of out-of-body experiences.

Adventures Beyond the Body is the account of William Buhlman's out-of-body experiences and the inferences he has drawn from them as to the nature of our existence. It is also a guidebook for those seeking to explore the out-of-body experience for themselves.

Mr. Buhlman's book is very much in keeping with the ideas about the nature of the nonphysical dimensions as experienced by Robert Monroe in Journeys Out of the Body and related by the near death experiencers in Raymond Moody's Life After Life and many others. The picture drawn by all of these is of an after-life that is really a continuation of this life, but at a higher level (or "frequency") in a universe that is multidimensional.

In essence, our physical world is a low and dense environment that we, as spiritual beings, express ourselves in through physical bodies (flesh-and-blood). We do this, as the consensus among writers on this subject seems to be, in order to grow and develop as sentient beings. The hard knocks of this physical life promotes that growth. As Mr. Buhlman says:

Each of us is currently experiencing the most effective system of growth ever devised: evolution by direct personal experience, by the very act of being.

Mr. Buhlman says that the ability to separate your spiritual (higher energy) self from your physical self (i.e., leave your body) is inherent in everyone and a very natural and safe thing to do. He provides instruction on how to do it in the last part of his book. This instruction consists of techniques (relaxation and visualization techniques) that can lead to a conscious separation from the body and experience of higher frequency environments (sometimes called the spiritual or numinous worlds). He says that daily practice of these techniques usually results in a person being able to attain a successful out-of-body experience (OBE) within thirty days.

Once a person is able to separate from their physical body, Mr. Buhlman suggests they engage in active exploration. In agreement with Robert Monroe, he says the first environment a person will find is the close, energetic one that is a near duplicate of the physical:

...the first nonphysical dimension is a parallel energy world almost identical to the physical universe. This dimension of energy existing close to the physical world is molded by the consensus thoughts of the six billion inhabitants existing in the physical.

We even have an energy body that seems to be especially designated for expression in this near-physical dimension. It is often called the "etheric" body and Mr. Monroe spends more time on it than Mr. Buhlman. But both recommend separating from this second body in order to explore the higher dimensions ("moving inward" is Mr. Buhlman's term for this further separation, and he describes it as a fast, moving, or traveling sensation).

Mr. Buhlman also talks a lot about is the malleability of the higher frequency environments to sentient thought. That is, when you're there, you think about something (like a park or a house) and it's there. You think about going someplace specific, and you go there (walking or flying as you imagine). There are even long-lasting environments created by the consensual imaginings of many beings (heaven and hell? Vahalla? Disneyworld?). This lends some credence to the premise of The Secret and suggests that there is some power to the idea of positive thinking. It also suggests that the Golden Rule is a really good basis for personal morality (because it keeps thoughts positive if actively practiced).

I've read many books on out-of-body experiences (OBE), near-death experiences (NDE), communications with the dead, and such over the years so I'm used to such mystical concepts. Readers with a similar background will not freak at Adventures Beyond the Body and will, I believe, find it enjoyable and enlightening. I found its biggest value to be its expansion on concepts that Robert Monroe introduced (like techniques for achieving an OBE) and his positive, nonspooky attitude in talking about all this. For readers new to this subject matter, I would recommend keeping an open mind and reading without judgment. If you don't dismiss it right off, it will take a while to digest.

Adventures Beyond the Body is a classic in the field of out-of-body experiences. Its timeless wisdom makes it a perfect book for both the newbie and the experienced traveler of other-dimensional spaces.
With each read, I learn more about the world of the unseen. Accessing what was once the unknown allows us to delve into secrets of the universe that lie within these spaces that hide from our physical senses. This book continues to be one of my all-time favorites. You won’t be disappointed.

This book helped me have my first out of body experience (OBE). Buhlman asks you to stick with a plan for 30 days; 14 days into the program I was successful. This is the #1 book I recommend to everyone interested in having their first OBE.

I had read this book about 4 years ago, and I was so enthralled, I put it on my reread list. Its refreshing to read the interpretations of someone who has an occidental background, seeking to explain the occult. It appears that Mr Buhlman has some technical understanding of the world of physics. His terminology suggests more than just a general interest. His colloquial style is just what practitioners relish, and skeptics needs. The techniques he explores have been confirmed by other researchers, so there is an air of comfort in his readings. His follow up book to this one is just as profound; The secret of the Soul, which I just finished about 3 months ago, carries on his illuminating work. Another high point in his books are his descriptions of the inter dimensions. If you are that cat, and you're curious about such things, his views on the subjects are a GOODREAD.

I had never heard of Astral Projection prior to reading this book and my mind is blown. The author does a great job of introducing the concept, providing techniques, and addresses every conceivable question one could have on the subject. The book covers more than AP and talks about spiritually, psychology, and even Energetics.

I don't want to sound hyperbolic, but this book has changed my outlook on the universe, life, and shifted my reality.

"Suddenly, everything I had learned about my existence and the world around me had to be reappraised. I had always seriously doubted that anything beyond the physical world existed. Now my entire viewpoint changed. Now I absolutely knew that other worlds do exist and that people like myself must live there. Most important, I now knew that my physical body was just a temporary vehicle for the real me inside, and that with practice I could seperate from it at will."

"An unquenchable desire for knowledge is propelling a select number of explorers beyond the security of their physical homelands. These resourceful adventurers are exploring and charting the universe beyond the dense, outer crust of matter. Only nonphysical exploration can pierce the dense, outer layer of matter and expose the invisible, underlying structure of our universe. It's time we recognize that the decaying molecular forms we see around us are not the only reality in the universe. it's time we know the truth that lies behind the molecular facade of life."

I could endlessly insert the most mind-blowing quotes from this book, so, for the sake of longing for adventure, trying to make sense of your own identity and unravelling the mysteries of our internal universe (and so much more), my advise would be to just READ THIS BOOK!!!

I would have given this five stars, but didn't for a couple reasons. First off, I haven't had a full blown OBE yet, so I'm reluctant to give an instruction manual five stars when it hasn't worked for me yet, but, I have had some success with the techniques in here, and I do think I'll get there. My biggest complaint is with the organization of the book. The first half deals mostly with the author's anecdotal experiences, and with his theories on the nature of reality, which are based on first hand observation during OBEs. This is very fascinating stuff, but, the reason most people will get this book is for what's in the second half. This is an instruction manual for having your own OBEs. This information should have come before the theorizing on reality.

I read this book a couple years ago and have it on my re-read list. Mr. Buhlman talks about experiences and how-to exercises for exteriorizing from your body. The anecdotes he writes about are interesting. I have been interested in achieving the states he talks about and believe they are possible but have never achieved the state myself. I had some interesting lucid dreaming I think as a result of trying the exercises but never reached the vibrational states he talks about. I am going to re-read the book again and continue to try. I gave it 4 stars because I haven't been able to acchieve what I read the book for. If I do I shall change my rating.

Perfect book for understanding the astral realm and OBE's. He describes my own experiences to a T. This is the first author who has done that. I think he has a great understanding and challenges you to find out for yourself what is true.

This is the better of his two books, I feel.

"Adventures Beyond the Body, more than any other work on out-of-body travel, helped me learn how to have astral experiences, which allowed me to have many lucid contacts with the spirit of my daughter, from both a waking state and from within dreams; these experiences continue on today. Particularly helpful was the idea of going "in" the body rather than "out", which can be a comforting way of looking at it for those who may be frightened by the idea of "leaving" their bodies. Also very helpful are navigational instructions William discusses, so that when we are traveling astrally, we may do so easily and efficiently. This book is a masterpiece of literature about astral travel and related experiences.

I really struggled with this book. It starts out promising and easily descends into painful repetition. If I had more time and a bone to pick I might go through and count how many times I had to read, "Clarity Now!" or encountered the exact same existential question in five different chapters. I'm sorry, this book could have been pruned down to 100 pages or even a very informative packet. A bit of good info and a ton of excess filler.

Three stars instead of two because this is a highly-rated book and I don't want to completely fault the good content for the weak. I finish every book I start, no exceptions, but this one was hard for me.

I'll come back and bump it up if I successfully travel out of body.

William Buhlman, is always the go too guy when it comes to out of body exploration, other than Bob Monroe, however he has passed on. I have explored the ether and even wrote two fiction novels with that as the modus Operandi. You cannot get better advice from reading any of William Buhlman's books. I had read the book before and wanted to refresh my memory.

I liked this book, it's probably the best book I've read on astral travel that has a lot of different techniques on how to do it. It takes varying different learning styles into account, and tries to give examples of the best methods for those learning styles.

It's not the best book I have read on the wonders of the Astral realm though. That's not saying it was bad, or anything. There were quite a few interesting accounts the author had included from his own travels, and the travels of others, but the author seemed limited in his imagination of what could possibly be achieved with this practice. Apart from that, I would highly recommend this book for the astral beginning for it has many methods to choose from and there's likely a method that would suit you.

Ok for introduction to OBE but very little firsthand experience related.

This book addresses some interesting and important aspects of the out of body state, and is worth reading in that regard. However, the title lead me to believe that I would be reading first hand accounts of the authors OBEs but very little of his experiences were related. There were some practical guidelines for achieving an OBE which were useful, so if you are looking for actual accounts, read Robert Monroe's books. I believe this book sets the scene, and prepares one mentally to accept the reality of OBEs. Only then would many be able to accept Monroe's work, as it is too far beyond normal comprehension without laying the groundwork.

Read many years ago so I will need to re-visit to give a more detailed review. I do recall being excited to read this book and I did try a number of the exercises / techniques to induce lucid dreaming or out of body experience (OBE) or Astral Travel (limited results).
I can remember thinking that this author seems to "know" a lot about our invisible reality and so my inner skeptic dismissed a lot of the book's information and it would be interesting to see how I react to some of the contents today, nearly 20 years later!

This book sounded bizarre. What he reported, his experiences, etc. but once you start following the techniques, you understand what he’s talking about. It’s amazing that this stuff is real, and the different energy dimensions are real. It works, this is an amazingly detailed guide and explanation. I called the Monroe institute and they said this was the book to get. They know what they are talking about. Once the author hits his stride you find that he was chosen as a teacher of the out of body experience. It was touching, moving and emotional. I did NOT expect that.

With lots of easy to follow in depth techniques and explanations coupled with examples and stories from his experiences and those of others, this book is truly a must read for anyone wanting their own Out of Body experiece and lacking or wanting to improve their skills. This, along with the Robert Monroe trilogy, helped me understand more than I could have imagined. I am now going to read his other book 'How to have an Out of Body Experience' next.

Mr. Buhlman has demonstrated (at least to me) that he is one of the most perceptive writers with a deeper understanding of the non-physical dimension. In this book, particularly, he explains some fundamental facts about the nature of reality that seem self-evident to anyone with a modicum of understanding of what happens beyond the body.

I think flying on the physical science that are likely to bridge his perceptive to the materialistic views of the same reality is actually thoughtful, particularly in that it's well done; but it seems to overpower his description of "adventures beyond the body" in this book

It's an interesting read that combines personal experience, theory, and practice, but you know what it lacks? Evidence, or even an attempt to show that any of this stuff is real.

Compare this to Monroe's Journeys Out Of The Body, a very similar work. Monroe carried out (or so he claims) experiments to see if his OBEs were real or just dreams/hallucinations, and supposedly established that they were real. Buhlman suggests that a practitioner can try this if they want, but never even suggests that he did so himself. If he won't even prove it for his own benefit, why should the reader believe him?

Amazing book! I was able to release the fears I had about OBEs, which were created by Robert Monroe's book "Journey of Souls". I love how William explains how these negative or dark entities we encounter are part of ourselves, and we're always in control. I can finally continue exploring OBE without holding back.

The only negative thing I found about this book, is that it's quite repetitive. I dont think it's very well written, and it did get annoying at one point. That aside, the content is mind-blowing.

This was the first book I read after my first spontaneous OBE. It reassured me about this phenomenon because the first time I experienced it, I was scared. This book made me understand that it was a normal phenomenon, not dangerous, and I continued. A book that helps us discover wonders and opens our eyes to the complexity of different worlds and the fact that we are eternal.
