Faith Through Rwanda and Me is a classic love story set in the country of Rwanda before, during and after the 1994 Genocide. It is a true story based on the main character’s experiences living out his beliefs and faith while pursuing the love of a young woman even as the society surrounding him crumbles. It is a compelling story that is beautifully told. If you are looking for a fresh love story, for inspiration or a way to challenge your faith then this story is a must read! The world can be a pretty dark place at times. If you are looking for inspiration, encouragement, hope, or a way to challenge your faith then this story is a must read! Much of the story takes place during one of the most intensive killing campaigns in the history of the world! These are real people who, because of their love for one another and understanding of who God is, acted decisively and heroically, with actions that saved lives. After the Genocide they went back. At great price they went back. Even after the death of his beloved wife, the main character still went back... The world is in need of real stories of seemingly insignificant people from what seem like insignificant places who do extraordinary things by the power of love and faith in an extraordinary God. If you're not a person of faith, the story alone will grab you. If you are, you will be encouraged to stand strong even when things do not go the way you thought they should.
Very moving missionary biography. Gary Bennett went to Rwanda initially in the 1970s on a short-term trip. Then he wound up back there full time. He was there when the Rwandan genocide of the Tutsis occurred in 1994. They escaped with soldier escort. He and his wife Melanie wind up back there full-time and have two children. Unfortunately, Melanie gets cancer when the children are young. They return to MN for treatment. But she dies 😔. Gary is a faithful servant and I was moved and encouraged and humbled as I read this. Not the most eloquently written book BUT the story is incredible.
Very good. The genocide of Rwanda is one that continues to break my heart. The story of Gary's missionary work is inspiring, even to a person whom does not believe in god, like me. I read this book for one of my graduate courses in social work, and am very pleased this is the book my professor chose.
