Between Jesus and Paul: Studies in the Earliest History of Christianity

Rate this book
Martin Hengel spent a lifetime studying the first three decades of Christianity--the span from Christ's ascension to Paul's conversion. Between Jesus and Paul represents a collection of six formative studies by Hengel concerning early Christology, the formation and success of the Christian mission, the functions of hymn singing in the young Church, and Pauline dogma. Drawing upon a wealth of source material, Hengel pieces together the development of Christianity's first, crucial decades. Any student or scholar will find useful points of embarkation for studying Christianity within Between Jesus and Paul .

It’s unfortunately not for serious scholars of the New Testament, but I (who am not a serious NT scholar) was able to get a lot of good insights from it! Hengel is quite good at providing a wealth of facts with well-articulated arguments. One thing that I loved was its demonstration that there was a strong christology immediately both in Aramaic and Hellenistic Jewish communities; the Gentile believers were not serious contributors to early praxis.

Very scholarly, and heavy on the reader’s ability to read Ancient Greek, but this piece was very helpful in my research on the period.
