Because nursing programs are places where students and faculty provide direct care to patients through clinical experiences, uncivil and disruptive acts must be addressed so that such behaviors do not spiral into aggression and jeopardize the learning and practice environment. Creating and Sustaining Civility in Nursing Education features original research based on polling questions, stories, and empirical evidence to provide an overview of academic incivility and to describe a wide range of evidence-based strategies to recognize, prevent, and address incivility in nursing education and transition to practice.
I had the honor of hearing this author speak during our Connections Week at TCC, and I was really impressed with her insight into civility and incivility (i.e. Bullying), partly based on her own experience. Reading this book was like a refresher on my I/O Psy degree, accompanied by all the experiences I encountered in my HR career of bullies in the workplace. Clark shares some excellent resources and tips for having civility as a org vision, and for making it a reality where you work. All of her ideas and cited research would apply to any workplace, not just the nursing arena. Clark's humility in sharing about how she was bullied in nursing school will help other students know how to deal with similar situations.
