Review to come. Prequel for Robison Wells' s Blackout series was an intriguing one if a bit brief. I honestly liked the protagonist and it made me curious as to what caused her sudden illness and set of powers. After a series of horrible events, she finds herself on the run. I'll definitely be reading the overarching series.
The most annoying thing about novellas is that you totally want more of the story! Another great read from critique-group member, Rob Wells. Good thing I have the next installment already started on my e-reader! The rest of you will have to wait.
Such an amazing start of the series! To be honest I bought the Blackout book but when I finished the first chapter I got a bit uninterested cause I didn't understand a lot about what was going on or how the powers happen but when I heard there was a 0.5 book, you already know i started searching it up and seeing where I could get it. I found it on amazon and to be honest if i didn't read this one i dont think i would have finish blackout so fast! But once I read this one I couldn't stop and finished both books on the same day 😂
This is the 2nd time I've read the prequel and I love how it's leading the first book of the series. It was short and fast-paced, but it still kept me on the edge of my seat. I hope I get to see Krezi again in one of the books. I'm excited to continue the series and to see what happens next!
A novella instead of a full book. If it had been any longer, I would have DNFed it. A really generic and unoriginal "people with superpowers" origins story. How unoriginal was it? The chicken chain in it was named Pollos Hermanos. Not to be confused with Los Pollos Hermanos from Breaking Bad...
GOING DARK is cheaper than a ticket to a Broadway show. (#GOINGDARKCONTEST) Though, I feel as if I just sat down to a show and the orchestra is playing the musical score. That feeling of anticipation right before the curtain goes up, that I am in for an evening of quality entertainment. I devoured Going Dark today, knowing it was a novella for Wells' upcoming novel. Now I am stuck anxiously anticipating the novel it precedes.
The novella reads almost like the diary of a teenage girl (Who knew he could write like a girl?) She discusses the crises her family is facing, including some she is responsible for. A car crash, a house fire, exploding landmarks, heroic actions, magic shows, quality "sister time." All of this in a few short pages.
I enjoyed the character, Krezi, and find myself already invested in her understanding her new-found powers. I think I see inklings of what she hopes to do with those powers in the few choices she already made. Alas, I have to wait until the novel comes out to find out if my suspicions are correct.
To add insult to injury, Wells provides an insight to the continuing story involving more powers, motivations, and more landmarks. Just reading about their plans made me cringe thinking about just how devastating something that horrific would actually be.
Anticipation. I look forward to reading the novel when it comes out. Until then, the $1.99 for this novella was worth my money.
"Going Dark" the eye-opening prequel to "Blackout" begins with a car accident that leaves Krezi (Lucretia) Torreón with a concussion and an unexplainable high fever. With a temperature that would kill a person Krezi expels a burst of energy that explodes into flames or shatters objects. She must learn to contain it before her secret is discovered by the wrong people, endangering her home, family and life.
Set in Las Vegas Nevada the novella is fast-paced and action-packed with a car crash, burning house and terrorist attack. A teaser to "Blackout" the reader is given a snapshot into the rise of a Lambda, a teen with an extraordinary power and to the terrorism that will undermine the fabric of society in America. The momentum never stops until it ends in a cliff-hanger that begs you to read the full length novel.
The characters for a short story are memorable especially Krezi who is filled with confusion, fear and panic when her family home burns down and a burst of light shatters her classroom at school. But determined and curious she soon discovers the source of a paranormal ability that will change her life forever.
Like all novellas it's short in character and plot development, but is an interesting introduction to Robison Wells chilling novel "Blackout."
I quite enjoyed this little prequel. It served as a good introduction to Blackout. Krezi is a fifteen-year-old girl who has been through a lot in the last little while. Her and her sister were in a car accident, then their house burned down from a fire, and now Krezi is experiencing some very strange things. She thinks that maybe she started the fire to her house. Ever since the accident, she has run a very high fever and she soon discovers that she can release that heat/energy/whatever-it-is to do damage to things around her.
I thought this novella was very well-done. It instantly caught my attention. So far, I like the characters and the story and I am looking forward to reading Blackout.
Going Dark is a excellent novella, packed full of all the things I like about books - great characters, cool setting, and interesting quirks / magic systems.
The only problem I had with this novella is that just when things really started to get going, it all came to an abrupt stop. It feels like this story could have gone on just a little bit longer to provide a more satisfying conclusion. But, you know, this is supposed to be an introduction to the main novel - Black Out - and this novella really makes me want to read that novel.
Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice. - Robert Frost
Novella "Going Dark" is an exciting prequel to the first book in a new series "Blackout" by author Robison Wells.
It starts out quickly and the momentum doesn't let up. Protagonist Krezi (Lucretia) is in an auto accident, gets a concussion and a broken nose and then starts running a high fever. And paranormal events spiral out of control after that.
Good character development for such a short story and I'm anxious to see where the author takes the story in "Blackout."
A very good look into what's suppose to come from "BLACK OUT". Which let me say, can't come out fast enough. A accident, weird things happen that no one can explain. What more could you want. X-Men does pop in my mind when I was reading this book. But seems as right now to have it own hidden twist. I read this in August of last year, and just re read it now. Thank goodness I have "Black Out" next to me. :)
This is a short introduction to a new series by Robison Well. I really wanted to like it more than I did, but I didn't get a great sense of the motivation of the main character or how she is able to start the fires. Is it like Carrie? For me, this book was a bit thin, but I look forward to the next book in this series because I like Robison's Varient books. I was a little disappointed that the book was short and revealed so little.
Going Dark is a short novella by Robison Wells, and a prequel to Blackout. Although a short story, the novella has interesting characters and a well-thought out plot/concept. It was a fun read all the way through, but unfortunately comes to an abrupt end just when things started getting going. Anxiously waiting to read Blackout now...
Going Dark wasn't as compelling as Blackout, but then prequel shorts are rarely as good as the main story. I liked seeing the onset of one of the Lambda's powers from the POV of a minor character in Blackout. And it was definitely fun to read. It just took me a little longer to get into the swing of the story.
I love Robison Wells as an author. I could not wait till Oct. 1 st for Blackout and lucky enough I didn't have too. This novella was really good and sets up for Blackout quite well. The only thing that bothered. Me was the mother. She was too religious for my taste to the point it irked me.
It was nice to get a look at those that had special abilities. I wish I would have read this before starting Blackout, I think I would have enjoyed Blackout that much more.
Very good and well filled with great detail. Definitely a good book for anyone who likes catastrophic thrillers. You will want this book to go on forever.
