A lovely story in verse about Bunnikin and his brothers and sisters spending an enjoyable day in the woods. Once again there are charming illustrations by AJ MacGregor, whose story it is, put into verse by W Perring.

Bunnikin asks his mother for a picnic while Loppy, Fluff and Bobtail await the answer. It is a maybe until Mrs Bunnikin consults the barometer and notes that the forecast is 'Fine', so she agrees and goes to the kitchen to prepare the food.

There is food for all of them, Loppy, Fluff, Bobtail, Whiskers who had been hiding when the picnic was agreed on, and, of course, Bunnikin, who when they set off. is left a little behind because the others walk too fast. 'Don't dawdle,' Fluff tells Bunnikin, who puts on a spurt to catch up.

They play games and Loppy climbs a tree so the others think it is fun to leave him there so that he will miss his tea. Sure enough, Loppy quickly follows and soon the teacloth is laid out and the food set upon it. Bobtail goes to gather wood but comes running back shouting, 'Robbers, Fluff! I could hear them by the fence!'

Slightly afraid Fluff gathers up her umbrella as a weapon and, with the others following in trepidation, she advances towards the fence. Once there she looks over to discover a pig, not robbers. This causes great hilarity and they run back to light a fire before having their tea.

They find a pool so Loppy goes to fill the saucepan but he falls in. Fortunately the others pull him out safely and wrap him up in a tablecloth and sit him beside the fire to get warm and dry. But Loppy gets wet again when, a spider having frightened Fluff, she jumps back and spills tea all over him.

Despite the minor setbacks they enjoy their picnic and then, with darkness beginning to fall, they set off for home. But at first they lose their way and then Bunnikin goes missing so a frantic search ensues. Bunnikin is eventually found safe and asleep under a tree and, having discovered their way home, the others have to carry Bunnikin home, still fast asleep!

Mrs Bunny is anxiously awaiting their return and when they arrive she tucks them up safely in their beds ... so, Good Night!

As the copy I have just read is an early edition I acquired it for a dear friend of mine who has a huge collection of Ladybird books and I thought I would read it again as the verses by both AJ MacGregor with revised verses by W Perring and the illustrations are so inviting as to make one want to have another look at it.

And it is just as good second time round, Bunnikin, along with Loppy, Fluff, Bobtail, and Whiskers, get up to the same japes on their picnic and suffer the same drama until they finally return home to the comforting arms of Mrs Bunny who 'Gathered in her sleepy heads,/Safe and sound,. but very sleepy,/Tucked them in their little beds!' So sweet!

The postman put it through the door,
Opened the parcel my jaw hit the floor,
The marbled cover, I was in heaven,
A a sixth edition from 1947.

It smelled so old and looked like gold,
With picture so bright I felt like a kite.
With ilustrations so old and shinning bright,
There was no care for the snow and the night.

A book from childhood, so another re-read. I found I remembered quite a lot of it, which is a testament to the power of rhyme. Gives me hopes for my own stories. Have to say, reading it now, the over-riding message I take away from this is that Mrs Bunnikin is a poor parent, letting her kids go out in the woods without parental supervision. Also, who calls their child Bunnikin Bunnikin?

I am collecting old Ladybirds as I go around second-hand book shops, sales and thrift stores. A nice. little story about a group of bunny children who go for a picnic and have some rather traumatic experiences, but it all ends up fine in the end.

Bunnikin and his older siblings have a picnic in the woods.

Mrs. Bunny sends her children off with a picnic basket, and they have afternoon tea in the woods with many quaint problems, such as falling into the stream when getting water for tea and forgetting the sleeping baby, before returning home at dusk.

This was a childhood favorite of mine. My caregiver would read this to me, and then we would have a tea party with chocolate milk. If I remember correctly, I think we even had a teapot with a bunny on it. Nowadays, allowing children to go off unsupervised with a toddler and do things like build a fire to boil water for time would be unthinkable. And the plot of going out for a picnic and then returning home would probably be too tame.
