As a huge fan of The Mortal Instruments, I have to admit I was very curious about The Shadowhunter's Guide. I first read City of Bones back in 2011, so I guess you could say by now I'm a little rusty on the introduction of Clary's story, but reading this guide takes me back.
I loved how the guide was broken down into chapters, telling you bits of information without spoiling too much of the story for you. Of course, the first thing I noticed was how the story was slightly changed for the movie, but that's to be expected. It's left me more than excited to watch it on the big screen now. As I said before, the guides broken down into chapters. We see chapters called What to Know, Who to Know, Places to Know, Runes, Weapons and so many more. It was a great insight to the story, especially for me because I was so intrigued to see if I had pictured things like the rune's in my head correct. Not only that, but the introduction is followed up with pictures from the movie and honestly, it's really great. It's great to see this story come to life and so far (baring in mind, I haven't watched the movie yet) I'm really impressed. I loved seeing all the characters come to life - especially Lily as Clary and Godfrey Gao as Magnus. I'm still not 100% convinced with Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace but, I'm hoping I change that opinion once I've watched the movie.
Even though I really enjoyed reading The Shadowhunter's Guide I don't believe it's a must read and honestly, even though I'm a huge fan of this series, I don't think I would ever buy the guide if I hadn't received it for review. Mainly because it didn't tell me anything new and secondly, I think the guide will only be suitable for fans that want to add it to their Mortal Instrument collection. I'd highly recommend you read it if you could borrow it from a library or from a friend, but I'm not sure buying the guide would be beneficial to someone new to the series, hey, but then that's just my thoughts.
Reorganising my shelves I stumbled upon this and felt like reminiscing about this film and what could have been.
I think the pictures of locations, characters and runes are the draw here. It does an ok job summarising the film and adds a few pages of details about other downworlders.
Look, if you’re here I know two things. 1. You loved the film - good you have TASTE. 2. You are looking for a little more ... aren’t we all. I would say if you haven’t read the books ... a big if. Head there. TMI is one of my all time favourites.
Not rating this one, I did enjoy ... it definitely brought a little relief from a high pain day. But it is lacking in a bit of depth let’s say. Will I be keeping it? Most probably. Oh and my Fairyloot Chain of Gold box just arrived so much excite! How ironic. 😂
Looks good but lacks substance. It makes the whole messy Clareworld seem a bit more ordered and all but it never goes deep anyway. It actually highlights how miscast the actor for Alec was since he doesn't even remotely look like a teenager.
PS. As for the actor playing the replacement vampire for Raphael: POC my ass! That guy is so pink I didn't even know he could get so pale and I watched that actor for years. And I have no idea what they did with him there, he is one of Germany's most attractive actors but you barely recognize him and he looks rather like some pale troll.
I am taking 2 STARS because of the content. Anyone who's read the books perfectly understands all the things that are explained inside.
Secondly, all that this book does is retelling the movie in words and paper. If you've seen the movie, don't waste your time reading this, it's useless. And it will only spoil you if you haven't. I don't understand it - was this released before or after the movie? I wouldn't go to the cinema if I was spoiled like that beforehand.
Anyways, enough criticism. Why did I give it 3 stars? Because, the illustrations inside are absolutely
B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!
That is the main reason why you may want to buy it. The sets from the movie are captured from a different angle and it's amazing. Also, the black background and golden print leave an amazing impression!
It was nice to learn more about the shadowhunters, but I couldn't give this a 5 because I found myself getting bored at some parts due to them repeating stuff any fan would know already.
It's been quite a few months since I've read City Of Bones, or watched the movie and the cover was pretty so I decided to purchase this (particularly because of it's bargain price.) I started reading this series way way back in 2007 due to a recommendation of a friend, and we practically inhaled it. However, now that I'm older, the plot didn't seem as enticing or as memorable as I thought it had when I was still 12 so this was a nice recap especially seeing as I'm trying to reread the entire series.
I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, and for what it is, this guide of sorts is okay. It doesn't exactly bring anything new to the table but the images are nice, particularly closeups on weapons and some movie scenes. The book is made well, with glossy aesthetically pleasing images and not too much writing/info that it clogs up the book.
I think what I liked the most was that it doesn't actually reveal the end of the film/book. Sure, it reveals a hell of a lot so if you haven't read the books and just happen to pick this up, maybe start with them or the film first to avoid spoilers but at least it didn't reveal all of it, giving just enough (maybe, even a little too much) to entice new readers to the series and new audiences to the film.
All in all, it was okay, so if you happen to be a die-hard fan maybe you should pick this up. It'd be a nice addition to your collection. If not, this book doesn't have much point so I wouldn't purchase it unless it was on sale like when I bought it.
Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this! I'm one of the ones that is on the fence about the movie adaptation of one of my favourite book series. Through teaser trailers and movie guides such as this, I can see that the movie and the books might only resemble each other. I think that might be a good thing in this case.
This guide provides a good look at the movie itself...and the props and backdrops too.
I can say that after reading through this...I'm much more excited about seeing the movie! The images are spectacular!
Don't know if I can really call this reading a book, since it was more about the images from the movie than another thing else. However, it is still a useful information source for those that have read the book or would like to see the movie. There is not a lot of detail to this book, but what there is get straight to the point. A must have book for those that love everything about The Mortal Instruments.
I don't think I can rate this book, because it's just a guide to the Shadowhunter world. I did really enjoy it though! It provided me with tons of facts about the Shadowhunter world, and it made me want to stop what I'm doing and read every single Shadowhunter chronicle book! :-D

I first read the Mortal Instruments about 4 years ago, the same year the film came out. This film companion would definitely be good as an introduction to the world, and includes the right amount of explanation as well as pictures and quotes! I probably should have read it earlier, since it didn't tell me anything new, which is why I've given it 4/5 stars - I like extra detail, like in the Shadowhunter's Codex for example. However, it was a very quick read and did make me want to watch the film again.
A colourful guide based on the feature film of the same name. Photographs, Portraits and Profiles of the actors/characters as well as detailed information on the Runes Symbols.
I found this to be very bright and colourful to grab the reader's attention. And after reading this I would have a better understanding of the symbols and the meanings behind them when I go to watch the Movie.
Amazing!!!! Kept me at the edge of my seat every second I was reading it. I loved this book and the rest of the series SO SO SO much. Great book for all ages and it really helps develop a level of imagination that you can't get from a textbook or classroom. This book is a drama, comedy, and romance. I love this book and you will to.
Though it has slight spoilers when it comes to plot, it doesn't give away a large things we learn about characters. A nice side read for the series. Just note this is a guide for the movie, it is slightky different from the book.
This follows the movie pretty well, for only 3/4 of the movie though. It just ended all of a sudden with no conclusion. It ended with Clary fighting Valentine. But like, what happens after that? You won't know if you read this.
