In 2005 London is the best and most exciting city in the world. But then the terrorist bombs of July 7th blow the city apart, and lives and worlds are shattered... For some, nothing will ever be the same again.
The Story: In an attempt to escape from his past and start a new life, Andrew Jardine moves to London in July 2005 and moves in with his best friend Guy.
But when out one night in London, Andrew accidentally sees Guy's new girlfriend, Sal, intimately kissing another man. Knowing that Guy thinks Sal is 'the one', Andrew is now faced with a terrible dilemma: does he tell Guy what he has seen, or does he ignore what he saw?
But before Andrew can make up his mind what to do, the train Sal is commuting to work on is blown up by the terrorist bombs of the 7th July 2005. Suddenly everything changes. Sal is left in a coma on the edge of life, and in the aftermath of the explosions, Andrew is thrust into the centre of a complex web of relationships where the lives and happiness of those closest to him suddenly become dependent upon him making the right set of choices.
Who is the girl in the coma, really? What is the truth behind her illicit encounter with the stranger in a night club? Should he tell his best friend the truth? Or should he let nature and events take their own course?
While struggling with his conscience in an effort to decide what decisions he should make, Andrew meets a beautiful doctor from Slovakia, and he begins to fall in love.
But can he trust her? What is the truth behind her past, and her feelings for Andrew?
Then, just when events seem to be coming to a happy conclusion, Andrew discovers that everything in his life is based upon a set of lies, and his world falls apart.
What is the real truth behind Andrew's past? And where does his future lie?
Set against the backdrop of London in 2005, this is a tale of our time.
The Sleeping Truth starts slowly, builds steadily, and then speeds on to an unexpected and emotional conclusion!
Reviews from Amazon for "Marrying Slovakia":
"One of the most engaging books that I have ever read.So different from the "run of the mill" productions."
"I think I went through every emotion possible and wished the story could just go on and on and on. If you buy this book you will not be disappointed."
"An interesting, informative and good novel. I am now looking forward to reading another of his books."
"I loved it but had difficulty reading the last couple of paragraphs, Why? My eyes were brimming with tears and my heart was jumping about all over the place. Delighted to say they were happy tears!!!!!!!!!! Loved it and can't wait to start my next Ian P C Irvine novel."
Ian Irvine was brought up in Scotland, and studied Physics for far too many years, before travelling the world working for high-technology companies. Ian has spent a career helping build the internet and delivering its benefits to users throughout the world,...as well as helping to bring up a family. Ian enjoys writing, painting and composing in his spare time. His particular joy is found in taking scientific fact and creating a thrilling story around it in such a way that readers learn science whilst enjoying the thrill of the ride. It is Ian's hope that everyone who reads an I.C.P.Irvine novel will come away learning something interesting that they would never otherwise have found an interest in. Never Science fiction. Always science fact. With a twist.
The first of Ian's novels is a Genetic Conspiracy Thriller which explores the world of Stem Cell Research and encourages us all to ask some very searching questions about the advances that science is making, and how much we, or others, should let it affect society. A contemporary adventure, "The Orlando File" takes the reader around the world and back, and creates a unique moral dilemma that the reader cannot help but get embroiled in: at the end, the reader must ask themself, what would they do in that situation?
His second novel "The Crown of Thorns" explores the power of genetics, explores the questions that the potential to clone humans will raise, and asks the ultimate question...what would happen if a scientist found a way to clone Jesus Christ?
Ian's third novel "London 2012 : What If?" departs from the world of genetics and explores an interesting possibility that Quantum Physics raises:the possibility for parallel worlds to exist alongside each other...and what would happen if a man who wondered what other types of lives he could be living had he made other choices, where unexpectedly to step from one world into another parallel world. "What If" is also an interesting voyage through human emotions, and many readers will find themselves asking themselves similar questions that the lead character does as they read the book. As with both "The Crown of Thorns" and "The Orlando File", at the end of the book the reader is left thinking...and different readers may take away different views on how the novels did, or should have ended... It is hoped that in this way, the novels will make themselves ideal subjects for reading clubs or book clubs.
Ian hopes that if you honour him by spending the time reading one his novels, that you will find it a positive experience, and enjoy it. He also invites you to email him and let him know if you did or did not enjoy the novel. And if you did, what were your favourite parts?
After sampling several e-books lately, I finally have found one that is not only well written but the main character is complex and very well drawn. Andrew Jardine (in The Sleeping Truth by Ian CP Irvine), fresh out of a relationship where his girlfriend was disloyal, heads for London and the life every young person finds exciting. Yet this question of trust and loyalty comes up again and again in different guises. Andrew finds himself acknowledging the complexity of different circumstances, the impact of his past on his present behaviour and how he can change himself so any new relationship can evolve into something long lasting and full of trust. A very good read.
Hi, I am the author of 'The Sleeping Truth'. I would like to invite you all to read and enjoy this novel. I would very much like to hear what you think of it: did you enjoy it or not? Please, please reach out to me and let me have your thoughts... regards Ian
I am an avid reader of Ian C.P. Irvine & was looking forward to reading this book. I so enjoyed Say you’re Sorry, Assassins Gift & Haunted from Within & Without, I couldn’t believe this was written by the same author. It was a reasonable story but went on & on, long & drawn out with very little happening, mainly about one man & his life, but while holding my interest I felt the book could have been a lot shorter and the story could have had a bit more go in it. It was somewhat a romantic tale but by no means up to the standards of his other books. I was sorry when I finished the others but glad to finish this one.
This author can do no wrong. The best storyteller I have ever found, I have read nearly all of your books now Ian and I am hooked by each one. I just don't have the words to describe how great they all are.
I like especially the lesson in this book: Life is not black and white -- as the main character (Andrew) had perceived it should be. He learned to see shades of gray, having to accept his own shortcomings. Living a life based on misinformation and manipulated thinking, he had to break down his prejudices to be able to live freely, seeking forgiveness for similar crimes that he was so judgmental and unforgiving about.
His reconnection with his mother was very moving and established the breaking of his mental chains and emotional wars, moving him from childlike thinking to maturity, with the ability to finally have a meaningful and healthy relationship.
It goes without question that no matter what foundation we have been given, if we truly want to live freely and happily, without carrying someone else weight or having their thinking motivate our behaviour negatively, we must take total responsibility for ourselves -- mind, body and soul -- and seek to find solutions to rise above our negativity. If not, we will forever be going around that same mountain of problems, no matter what wrapping it comes in, instead of moving foward. In Andrew's case, every intimate relationship broke until he finally faced his demons and took responsibility and appropriate action for his thinking and behaviour.
If you know something that would ruin a friend’s life, will you tell? Andrew who moved into Guy’s apartment after his breakup with Kate, could not believe his eyes when he saw Sal kissing another guy very intimately at a club, the day before Guy proposed to her. Guy proposed to her, and she told him she will give him an answer within a week. Andrew wants to tell Guy what he saw but fate has other plans...on her way to work, terrorists bombed the train Sal was travelling in. She sustained a head injury and was taken to hospital. Andrew as well as Guy tries to get her to wake up from her coma. I am curious to read what happens next, in the 2nd book of this series.
This book is in 2 parts. The story is said to be a 'medical thriller' , personally I see it as a contemporary romantic suspense. There isn't too much medical about it! That said, I really really enjoyed both book 1 & 2. The story is well written and original. His protagonist is complex and well drawn. I thought I knew where the story was going but it had some great unexpected twists. Irvine has delivered a page turner where the characters build before your eyes. I loved the descriptive side to Irvine's writing, it was strong and had me right bang in the middle of it! This is a book you won't want to put down. This is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be the last.
