"Så långt jag minns tillbaka brukade vi syskon, liksom nästan alla barn, tycka mycket om att rita. Jag var bara sex år då jag hade klart för mig, att jag helst av allt ville lära mig rita, när jag blev stor, och allra helst rita i sagoböcker. Min bror och jag brukade ofta sitta och rita tillsammans. Han ritade vikingafejder och grekiska hjältestrider, medan jag ritade barn och stugor och landskap. Hans ritningar var säkert mycket bättre än mina. Jag kommer ihåg att jag beundrade dem mycket, fast jag nog tyckte att hans hjältar hade väl korta ben." Så berättar Elsa Beskow om sin barndom "När jag var liten" publicerad första gången i Barnbiblioteket Saga nr 35 (texten ovan tagen ur Solägget 1986) I samma berättelse skriver Elsa Beskow om hur roligt det var att gå i skolan och få lära sig läsa, hennes favoritbok var en tjock Topeliusbok som hon släpade med sig överallt och läste högt ur för sina syskon.

Redan som liten satte hon ihop långa sagor som hon berättade för sin ett år äldre bror, "Vanligen gick det till så, att han släpade mig med sig till en vrå, satte sig själv i vägen för mig, så att jag ej kunde rymma, och befallde: berätta nu! Och jag pladdrade på så gott jag kunde. Ibland tappade jag alldeles tråden i berättelsen och frågade honom bekymrad: 'Vad menar jag, Hans?' 'Kanske menar Elsa så…' föreslog han helt beredvilligt, och så fortgick berättelsen."

Elsa Beskow föddes 1874 på Söder i Stockholm. Hennes familj bestod av mor och far, fyra systrar och en bror. När Elsa Beskow var 15 år dog hennes far och modern blev ensam med barnen. Familjen flyttade till moderns ogifta yngre syskon som bodde tillsammans. Mostrarna och morbrodern blev verklighetens förebilder till Tant Grön, Tant Brun, Tant Gredelin och Farbror Blå.

Under åren 1892-95 utbildade sig Elsa Beskow till teckningslärare vid Tekniska skolan, det var också då som hon började att teckna för barn. 1897 gifte hon sig med Natanael Beskow, präst och konstnär. Paret fick sex söner, vilka många gånger kom att stå modell för barnen i hennes berättelser och sagor. Deras hus och vildvuxna trädgård i Djursholm fick ge inspiration till hennes besjälade blommor och växter. Elsa Beskows stil har jämförts med sekelskifteskonstnärer som Walter Crane och Kate Greenaway, men även Ottilia Adelborg. Första gången hennes bilder, bildberättelser och verser publicerades var 1894 för barntidningen Jultomten.

Barnboksdebuten kom 1897 med bilderboken Sagan om den lilla lilla gumman, en klassiker som de flesta barn känner till ännu idag. Elsa Beskow hade fått ramsan om den lilla gumman berättad för sig av sin mormor och i den första upplagan från 1897 slutar boken abrupt med gummans "Schas katta!" I nästa upplaga tyckte förläggaren på Wahlström och Widstrand att boken skulle sluta med "och katten sprang till skogs och kom aldrig mer igen" för så mindes han ramsan.

Men femtio år senare, i en ny upplaga, skrev Elsa Beskow till raden "Men kanske[br]ändå att han kom hem till slut" då flera barn blivit ledsna över det tidigare slutet.

Beskows bilder dominerade bilderbokskonsten under närmare 50 år och säkert har många av dagens bilderbokskonstnärer påverkats av hennes konst.

1952 erhöll Elsa Beskow Nils Holgersson-plaketten för sin samlade produktion. Det finns dessutom ett pris uppkallat efter henne, Elsa Beskow-plaketten, instiftat 1958 av Sveriges allmänna biblioteksförening.

Peter and Lotta are orphans who live with their Aunts and Uncle. This is the first Christmas they have spent with their new family and there is so much to do. Peter and Lotta make ginger bread, collect a tree, make presents and get a visit from the Christmas Goat! There is much adventure in this story too, the children meet a charcoal burner in the forest, look after twin babies and plan a Christmas Goat surprise for their Aunts and Uncle!

Elsa Beskow’s beautiful illustrations give you a glimpse into Swedish life and their Christmas traditions. These picture books have slightly more text than the average picture book and are ideal for children who want a slightly longer story but still enjoy beautiful illustrations.

You’ll want to own this one - you’ll cherish the read through every year!

Peter and Lotta spend their first Christmas with their Aunt Green, Aunt Brown, Aunt Lavender, and Uncle Blue, and it’s a wonderful one! They’ve never done so many fun, traditional activities leading up to the holiday before. It’s exciting going into the forest to pick your own tree… that is, until it’s not. Then there’s dancing around the tree, singing carols, and did the Aunts say there would be presents?

The story continues into the next year’s Christmas too, with a funny and delightful turn of events!

And the illustrations - gasp! They are so wonderful! I want to frame them!! You’ll adore the picturesque imagery of yesteryear’s merry making.

Peter and Lotta - whose story began in the picture-books Aunt Green, Aunt Brown and Aunt Lavender and Aunt Brown's Birthday , and then continued in the delightful Peter and Lotta's Adventure and Uncle Blue's New Boat - return in this fifth and final installment of their series, in which they celebrate a very Swedish Christmas! Surprised when the Christmas Goat appears at dinner (coincidentally, at the same time that Uncle Blue is out of the room) with their gifts, Peter and Lotta believe Aunt Lavender's explanation - that he is really an enchanted prince who lives in the middle of the forest - implicitly. Sure enough, they encounter a dark-haired musician in the forest the next fall - masquerading as a charcoal-burner - and request that he, in his capacity as Christmas goat, deliver their gifts to the aunts. Imagine everyone's surprise, when TWO Christmas goats appear at dinner...

I was surprised to see, from another reviewer's comments, that some people don't like the inclusion of the Christmas goat (rather than Father Christmas), as that was one of the things I liked best, about Peter and Lotta's Christmas! This alternative gift-bringer was fascinating to me - I'd never heard of this tradition before! - and could prove very educational for English-language children. I also appreciated Beskow's sensitivity to the sometimes credulous nature of children, in the form of Peter and Lotta's absolute belief in Aunt Lavender's explanation for the Christmas goat. All in all, this was a delightful little holiday tale, ably accompanied by Beskow's charming artwork, and is highly recommended to any reader looking for Swedish Christmas fare, or who is a fan of the author/artist's work.

En klassisk gammal bilderbok av typen bilderna är endast där för att illustrera texten. Texten hade fungerat lika bra utan bilder som med, men bilderna gör den mer brukarvänlig i förhållande till barn. Dock så är den nu så pass gammal att det nog är mycket svårt för barm att kunna relatera till boken på något vis. Kan tänka mig att den skulle kunna vara mycket användbar i historiedagar på skolan eller något liknande. Och den är intressant att se ur nationalistiskt och pedagoghistoriskt perspektiv. Men som bok att läsa för ungar idag så anser jag att den är utdaterad, det finns många många böcker som gör mycket mer intressanta saker. Denna är väl närmast bäst att använda som historisk bakgrund till bilderboken.

I'm going to blame the poor writing on the translator. I have to believe Elsa Beskow's original version in Swedish was as delightful and engaging as her illustrations. But alas, this picture book does not so much tell a story as it reports an order of events. I thought the Christmas goat was a fun, unique element, I liked how the kids made their own Christmas gifts, and I liked the mystery of the prince in the woods, but the fact remains the execution of this "story" was disappointing.

Yksi hienoimpia lastenkirjoja ikinä! Inspiroiva tarina ja kuvat. Kestää lukea kerran vuodessa vielä nelikymppisenäkin. Ihmeesti kannetkin ovat kestäneet. Suosittelen kaikille aikuisille ja lapsille, jotka haluavat viivähtää kirjan äärellä toisenkin tovin, hidastaa ja huomata pieniä tärkeitä asioita. Myös historiallisena kuvauksena mielenkiintoinen.

This could easily be categorized with short chapter books. It was a fun story about Christmas traditions like the Christmas goat and how a couple of children try to help the Christmas goat bring presents to their aunts. I seriously loved this cute book!

As with the other Peter and Lotta stories by Beskow, this story involves a bit of adventure along with the Christmas celebration. Interesting plot and appealing retro watercolor illustrations.
