I really don't know how to take this story. It's as if I walked into a room where everyone is talking about a common subject and I'm expected to know it. Trouble is I don't speak their language.
Adlin MacLomain is a self professed five hundred year old wizard. The woman of his dreams (that's literally) is a twenty year old woman from the 1940s named Mildred Broun. Somehow she's transported back in time to medieval Scotland and straight into his waiting arms. Thus begins the love tryst between the two.
If there was greater care taken with the transitions between scenes and less mystery I would have found it less frustrating. It seems to be a given that the reader should know everything before they open the book. Unless there's a story that I'm missing.
Anywho I think I'll give the second book a go. But honestly I don't think I'll be rushing for it just yet.
I wish I could say that I liked it but the book was just okay. To be honest, it was confusing. I kept thinking that things would make sense if I just kept reading but it really didn't. I have the box set so I will keep going and hope that things clear up a bit. I gave the book 2 stars but I think I may have been generous with that as the ending was even more confusing than the entire book put together.
The main reason I'm giving this book 2 stars is because I came into this series without reading the MacLomain series first. This meant a lot of things were happening which I didn't really understand. I also didn't get a lot of world building. I think I would have liked it more if I had read the starting books first.
I picked up this series after reading the Viking Ancestors and realizing that it was part of a much larger story and collection of books. After reading this rather short but sweet story, I see that it is simply an introduction to characters that are part of the larger Series. So with that in mind it was good enough to keep me going although it wasn’t strong as a stand alone.
I read this as book 1 of "The MaLomain series - the Early Years. A tale of love and devotion, mystics and time travel. A tale of never ending love. You need to read the King's Druidess, to understand where Adlin originated from. This is a great start for what looks to be a fantastic series.
I don't think I've ever understood a book less or been more confused about the magic/world building. Should have just rewatched Outlander rather than trying to understand what this book was trying to do
This book was part of a boxed set I bought. Giving Highland Defiance 2.5 stars. The romance was good, but the rest left a lot to be desired. Going to put the next in the box set off for a week or so.
I just finished this story. It was so very different and interesting. I really enjoyed reading it and I even cried in the end. I think that who ever reads this will also enjoy it.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I recommend it to others? Yes The description of the book says all I could think to say. Mildred and Adlin share adventures and a love that endures forever
Highland Defiance was a book I fell in love with from page one. The story and the characters were so encompassing you think your travelling back in time with Mildred. This was the first of Sky Purington’s books I have read, but I will definitely be picking up her other books in the Maclomain series. This is a short, quick read, but any more of the story would have been too much. Adlin and Mildred’s love story is sigh worthy and Adlin himself is drool worthy. Also, Adlin’s sister Iosball was great. She really was a fantastic asset. Her wit and spunk really added to the depth of the story. I hope she gets a book of her own. I’d love to learn more about her story. I would say my only wish for this book was that it had an epilogue of sorts. I was left with some questions like what about Mildred’s mortality or Does Mildred see her family again? No earth shattering questions but ones none the less that I would have loved answered. Overall, this is a great Highland romance. If you like Highland Warriors and a great love story you will love Highland Defiance.
The story of Adlin and Mildred was a pleasure to read. I must admit that there were times when I was not quite clear on what was going on, but of course, by the end, it all makes sense. The story was entertaining. I really enjoyed the fact that this story did not follow the tried and true map of the traditional time travel romance. At the end of the story, I wanted to read more about Adlin and Mildred, but Sky's note at the end provided reassurance that I have not yet seen the end of them. All in all, an excellent read and one I recommend to anyone interested in the time-travel romance genre.
I just am not into time travel stories; they always seem to confuse me and there are things in them that just don't add up for me, and that distracts me from fully enjoying the book. This story certainly had it's charms and maybe if I read the full series, it would make more sense. If you are into time-travel romance, then this book will probably be right up your alley even though it isn't up mine.
Okay, I won't spoil this for anyone, but the epilogue or author's note totally ruined this story for me. This author skips around a lot and doesn't paint the scenes well. I also feel like if you haven't read her other books you will be lost (which I was). I have another one of her books on my kindle that I am going to delete and not even bother reading.
This is some time traveling . Mildred whips backwards and forwards so often it makes your head spin. I have already read the series that this prequels. I wish I had read it first , just because I knew the end result. You can read it as a stand alone no problem but if you haven't read any of these start here then the rest of the series. Very romantic with sexy highlanders can't get any better.
I thoroughly loved the fantastical magical time travel romantic adventure! Fall in love with Mildred of 1942 America and Laird Aldin of 1050 Scotland as their story tests the strength of true love surviving formidable obstacles and time travel jaunts back and forth! I loved this amazing fantasy and can't wait to start the second book "Highland Persuasion" next!!
I enjoyed this the characters were good but the story felt a bit rushed some how I would have liked to go deeper with some of the characters and the plot
Enjoyed this immensely. Started series with the next set in the series (the Next Generation) and am now backtracking, so it's great to see how Arlin and Mildred started the ball rolling. Sky Purington writes beautifully descriptive scenes and her skill with dialogue is masterful. Highly recommend to fand of PNR and time travel.
