I do love the DUMMIES series and have done so for many years, so I thought as a humanities student I'd tackle something alien to me since high school all those decades ago. Alas, BIOLOGY FOR DUMMIES is one of the least accessible of the series I've encountered, much of the first half going way over my head for long sections; there's a great deal of jargon they expect you to know and they bombard you with it constantly. Oddly, it's the latter sections that feel more acceptable to the layman reader such as myself. It's certainly in-depth and entertaining and the usual jokes and cartoons work a treat, but I just wanted something a little...simpler. Or maybe the sciences simply aren't for me.

Good overview of the basics. This book helped me understand a lot of the introductory-level ideas with language I found easier to understand than any biology book I'd tried before (and I tried a few - I struggle to get my brain around most of this topic). I really have a hard dang time with biology, but I found this one a fairly easy read, and it felt less like hitting my head on a wall than other biology texts did.

Took a star off, and I would definitely put a content warning, because there was a pretty awful section that demonstrated ignorant and inaccurate views of intersex people and their experience. I REALLY hope that has been corrected in subsequent editions. Being intersex is not "an example of what can go wrong with chromosomes," or at least presenting it that way is pretty inappropriate. I was startled to find that in what I assumed was a reasonably up-to-date, forward-looking text. I realize the medical world and the textbook industry are still playing catch-up to our current understanding of intersex people's experiences, but the author or publisher still needs to drastically amend that section. Find some other way to explain the effects of chromosomal variations.

Otherwise, admittedly, this book was helpful for me from an educational standpoint. I don't regret reading it. Just hoped for it to be a little more current in places.

Dit boek beantwoordde totaal niet aan mijn verwachtingen. Ik ben afgestudeerd als ingenieur biochemie. Dertig jaar na mijn afstuderen wil ik mijn kennis van biologie, chemie, fysica en wiskunde eens opfrissen. Het leek me een goed idee om te beginnen met een dummies boek vooraleer op zoek te gaan naar recente studieboeken.

Wat ik verwachtte van dit boek was een basisboek voor biologie, maar al snel werden zaken geïntroduceerd die eerder in een basisboek voor celbiologie, genetica, plantkunde, anatomie, biochemie, ... thuishoorden. Mijn eerste reactie was positief, een basisboek en studieboek in 1, maar al snel bleek dat er wel veel zaken geïntroduceerd werden, maar dat er geen plaats voorzien was om ze behoorlijk uit te leggen. Volgens mij is dit boek mossel noch vis. Het is veel te ambitieus voor een dummies of basisboek en het schiet schromelijk tekort voor een studieboek.

Ik heb er wel een aantal zaken uitgehaald, maar naar mijn gevoel was ik beter meteen op zoek gegaan naar een studieboek. Ik heb het boek niet uitgelezen.

Dit is het eerste boek dat ik via de cloudLibrary heb ontleend. Dat ging zeer vlot. Goede app voor de iPad. Het enige minpuntje is dat de tekeningen niet konden vergroot worden.

Dit boek was niet wat ik ervan verwachtte.
Er worden veel onderwerpen aangesneden, die in nog veel meer details worden uitgelegd. Steeds in hele korte paragrafen, waardoor voor mij de verbanden onduidelijk waren.
De stof is denk ik te omvangrijk om in één boek te behandelen. Er komt bovendien nogal wat scheikunde bij kijken, niet bepaald mijn favoriete vak.

De laatste hoofdstukken zijn meer verhalend, informatief en interessant.
Zoals over Darwins evolutietheorie en over ecologie.

Quite possibly the only reason I'm the top of my class for Biology at school! Fantastic for the teen wanting to know more about Earths inhabitants as well as the adult wanting to increase his general knowledge.

I read it as a quick review before a placement test... It was well done, but I could have done with less jokes. That said, I was in a rush.. if I wasn't, I probably would have loved them.
