The Underground Witch

Rate this book
As the last of the Incenaga Witches, Emmeline has been tortured and forced to use her power to kill. But unlike the Incenagas before her, she has survived. With her freedom restored, she should feel safe, invincible even. After all, she has the protection of Prince Erick’s army and a power strong enough to obliterate any enemy. Yet Emmeline lives in fear for the next person who will try to control her, and no one can seem to find the tyrant threatening to claim her.

Until it’s too late.

With everything on the line, and the enemy at her throat, will Emmeline be able to use her power like never before? Even if it kills her?

In The Underground Witch, the second novel of the Incenaga Trilogy, Debbie Dee delivers enough adventure, heartbreak, and suspense to captivate readers at every turn.

Debbie Dee recently moved to southern Idaho with her husband and three children where she is learning how to be a country girl in her favorite pair of blue heels. She adores fairy tales and happy endings, but secretly crushes on the bad guy now and then.

As a dedicated musician who practices way too much, she never expected writing would sweep her off her feet until she jotted down a scene from a daydream, which turned into two scenes, which turned into a messy house and her first novel. Since then she hasn’t been able to let a day go by without writing.

In addition to writing, she plays the piano, harp, violin, and gets in frequent fights with her cello. She loves to read and play board games - when she is winning.

It was so good! I really enjoy reading and I love it when they put a lot of detail in them and that's what this book does. It makes you feel for the characters and want to cry or scream at some of the parts because of what a character did it's really good.

Detailed Review:

If you don't want to miss out on the first book of the Incenaga trilogy, you can find a review of The Last Witch here.

I don't know what to say. I seriously don't know. It's too much for me. But I can't just stop, right?

That's how good the book is, if it leaves me with nothing to say except for this,

AWESOME.

But of course I must still give you some hints on the story.

Emmeline and Erick are happy. They are about to have a wedding and they can't wait. That remains. until they receive a letter from a messenger. It is from Volarcus, a city who claims to have assembled a large army to rival Dolmerti's strong one. And they want one thing, or person.

Emmeline.

If she doesn't go with them, the whole of Dolmerti could possibly die because of her selfishness to stay. She is cast in a dilemma.

Meanwhile, from a strange kingdom, Griet, the King and twenty soldiers, including his deadliest assassin, Demyan and an unknown Dolmertian have travelled the sea to claim his prize. Once again, I must say her name.

Emmeline.

He wishes to use her to expand his kingdom. And he is the one who sent the letter. This is the truth:

THERE IS NO LARGE ARMY. THEY ARE NOT FROM VOLARCUS. AND EMMELINE IS IN HUGE DANGER.

When Emmeline comes to face with the King, Tiergan, she finds her courage and determination tested to her limit. Her love for Erick made her leave.

I felt like crying when I read that.

She is tortured, beaten, humiliated but she survives. In Griet, she discovers a secret about the Incenagas which affects her in every way.

SHE IS NOT THE LAST INCENAGA TO BE ALIVE. EVERYTHING SHE THINKS SHE KNOWS ABOUT HER KIND NO LONGER EXISTS. HER POWERS ARE PUSHED TO THE LIMIT AS FINDS A WAY TO STOP TIERGAN FROM CONTROLLING HER.

There is Orinda, the first Incenaga to come into being and there is Flora, Emmeline's grandmother.

And there's a cute little boy called O'fin. He's not a witch. I just thought he was really brave for a nine-year old. I loved him.

I am not telling the whole story here, there are more complicated things in it. And you should really read it for yourself. I can't just give everything away.

And I'll just end with this:

Still the best witch's trilogy ever! And Emmeline is the best heroine EVER! I mean it!!!!

Brief Review: Wow. Wow. Wow. WOW. I'm sorry but that's the only thing I can say when I think of this book. Great job, Debbie. Seriously. I am too stunned to think of anything else to say. But if you read the book, you'll really wish you were more like Emmeline. She's the best heroine ever!!!! And can I just say that the cover once again makes me drool? Now I'm talking...

Final Rating: 5/5 'Totally Amazing!'

QUOTE:

Because of Emmeline's courage and determination, I dedicate this quote to the book, and on behalf of her, to you:

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”

If you have not read book one, there may be some spoilers!

Wow… ok. This series is great. Firstly it’s a different take on witches which I really enjoy but secondly the writing is fabulous.

This book starts where The Last Witch leaves off but I think Debbie Dee did such an amazing job at recapping the first story. Not so much to where I was tapping my foot but enough that if you actually haven’t read it then you wouldn’t be completely lost. Although, to understand the relationship between Erick and Emmeline I would still totally recommend reading the first! Plus they go through quite a lot and getting to know Emmeline is fabulous.

She hasn’t stopped being her bad ass self in this one either. She is stuck between a rock and a hard place and this girl deals with SO MUCH! She puts everyone ahead of herself and although I just wanted to cry during some scenes it was absolutely fabulous.

The great thing about this trilogy, and Debbie’s writing, is the characters. The evil guys are REALLY evil. I mean they will stop at nothing to have the last Incenaga. It’s crazy but that’s what villains are all about. I completely enjoyed reading about good villains and this was no exception. It really gives the heroine reason to be stronger than she would otherwise be, and Emmeline is no slouch when it comes to power. She is amazing!

I really think the plot built on what was set in book one, the characters were just as amazing and the writing is phenomenal. I want to say so much more but don’t want to give out any spoilers so I’ll just say, you must read this!! It is a fabulous paranormal and Debbie does not let you down! I can NOT wait until book three! Only downside to reading arcs!!!

Really liked this second book. I didn't love it like I LOVED the first one. However, this is usually the case with me in multiple book series. The second book is always the hardest for me. I want the characters to already be the best that they can be and that usually doesn't happen until the third book. I loved the story line and the addition of some new characters. I LOVED O'fin! He was so great! I like how we found out a few more things about the witches. I still wanted Emmaline to somehow come into her powers more. I love a strong heroine.

Overall really great book and I will be waiting anxiously for the next one!

The Underground Witch is even better than The Last Witch (if that is possible). I'm not much for scenery description, but the descriptions in this book were captivating. They sucked me right into the scene. Emmeline grows so much in character and strength in this book. It's definitely read all night, can't put it down book.

This second book covered all the missing links from the first book. As a reader you can stop here or move to the next book for a new series. Love the option that the writer gives

Some clouds were too different to blend in with the rest. And if another little cloud came too near, the big cloud engulfed it in itself until the little one no longer existed.

Emmeline and Erick are deeply in love and preparing to marry. But with Emmeline being the last Incenaga there is always the threat that someone will come and rip her away from her home and try to own her. Without going too deeply into things because it will definitely spoil it for you, I will say that Emmaline and Erick's love will be put to the test and Emmeline will be pushed to the brink and will need to draw on everything that she has to try to come out the other side as unscathed as possible.

I really loved book one in this series but Debbie Dee has taken it to a whole new level with The Underground Witch. The action and adventure was beyond awesome. The romance was beautiful, the twists and turns were aplenty and the level of evil was staggering. This book was absolutely epic on all levels!!!

When I reviewed book one in this series, The Last Witch, I said that Emmeline was full of strength and determination. And she was. But that was nothing compared to the strength and determination that she showed in book two. The things that she endured throughout this book broke my heart and at the same time made me so angry!!! And yet she took everything dished out to her with such dignity and selflessness, always putting everyone else's needs before her own.

But a part of him hoped she would remain difficult so he would get his chance to beat her. It would feel so good to wipe the smirk off her face.

As well as our favourite characters from book one we are introduced to a whole new cast of characters in this book, some you will love and some you will loathe with a passion and intensity. O'fin and Burungi were the too that I really loved. Both of them came into Emmeline's life when she needed them. At one stage Emmeline says O'fin is a strong boy with an even stronger heart, and she couldn't be more spot on. And then you flip the coin to the other side and you have evil beyond all evil. Tiergan was horrid. I despised him with everything that I had. I'm pretty sure that I plotted ways for him to meet his demise in my head.

"Emmeline, I don't care what you are. I love you and I will do whatever it takes to protect you"

Erick once again captured my heart. He is all things good. He shows that a man can be leader without being cruel or brutal or unkind and still gain the utmost respect from those that he leads. And he loves with his whole heart. But that heart experiences hurt in this book and he has to find the strength to go on and fight for what he wants.

There is so much going on in this book that there were times when I just couldn't put it down. I was desperate to find out what was going to happen and how things were going to turn out. Debbie Dee's writing is superb, her characters are fantastic and her ability to tell a story is breathtaking. If you haven't started reading this series yet then you are definitely missing out.

A Definite 5/5 Stars!!

So I thought the first instalment of this trilogy, The Last Witch, was as good as it got - but guess who managed to prove me wrong? The Underground Witch completely blew my socks off, and I'm now sat here with a crazy big book-hangover. If you haven't heard of this series, add it to your TBR list as soon as possible - you do not want to miss this.

Emmeline is the last Incenaga, otherwise known as a fire witch. Hidden for years in the middle of a forest, Emmeline is finally sent off to be married to the Prince of Dolmerti, a land with a fierce army that will be able to easily protect her. Or so they think - countless men come to try and find Emmeline so they can control her and her power, and more than once she has found herself at their mercy. In The Underground Witch, even more is at stake, and Emmeline must find a way to learn to control her power herself, or all she loves will be lost.

From reading The Last Witch, I knew how good Dee was at characterisation - but I think her skills have improved even more! Although a fantasy novel, I could feel the realism of Emmeline and her situation, and I found I could relate to her. Dee wrote the emotions so thickly that it was impossible for them not to transfer over to the reader. Throughout the novel, Emmeline became more than just a character - she became a friend, and as I read her adventures, I cried when she cried and laughed when she laughed. So I take my hat off to Dee for being able to achieve something like that.

Erick is still a massive bookcrush of mine - how can you not adore him? I loved reading from his point of view, and it was a creative way of making sure the reader got all sides of the story - from the kidnapping to the moping to the training to the rescuing! I felt like I was hovering about the main characters, watching the scene unfold before me.

The plot was just as thick and gripping as it was in the previous book, and there were long period of time where I just couldn't put it down; I always wanted to know what was going to happen next! Dee slipped the reader just the right amount of information to keep them guessing, but not so much that the plot was obvious; anything could have happened, and it would have been a surprise. And I actually was surprised by how many plot twists there really were - and how I didn't see any of them coming! Towards the last 20% of the book, I don't think you could have pried my fingers away from my Kindle - it was packed full of action and revelations, and was an incredible climax to the sequel for this trilogy. I'm now left wondering that if Dee managed to up the anti for this book - well, what is the last one going to be like? I know that whatever happens, it will be amazing, and I am so so so excited for it's release!

As I said earlier, if you haven't read The Last Witch, then you must. It is honestly my favourite indie series going - not only is it a unique concept, but it is interesting and written impeccably. You will not regret reading this, I promise!

I really liked this second book. I thought there was great character development in both main characters and there was a lot of Incenaga history, which was what was missing for me in the first book. Emmeline learned so much about where the line of witches came from, more secrets about her mother. I really enjoyed reading those parts of books, pretty much when everything comes together and you find your “aha” moment. For me it’s more like “hmm so that’s why this and this happened, it all makes sense now”.

In the beginning Erick receives a letter saying that someone is coming for Emmeline and they know that she is a witch, and that they will stop at nothing to take her with them. And the story takes off, I never know what to say about it because I don’t want to give away the whole story. Tiergan was the new ruler that was coming for Emmeline. When he captured her instead of beating her like Mahlon used to do to gain control over her, he gave her the best of what his country had to offer and when that didn’t work he put her in a pit where there were snakes sometimes to scare her.
There were new characters in this second book; there was Tiergan the antagonist, he was ruthless. There was his assassin Demyan, who could kill on command and not even think twice. He also had incredible strength almost unnatural. And other characters that were just as awesome and interesting to read about but those are a mystery.

I give The Underground Witch 4/5, I really liked it and I’m interested to see what happens in the next book because it will be Emmeline’s biggest battle.

This started a little slow for me. Lots of drama in the beginning and romancing between the two love interests, which was too much for me. Then about a third of the way through the story picks up when Emmeline meets Tiergan, king from another land. Emmeline is again forced to find strength within herself to survive while Erick must decide what is true and what he will do.

I enjoyed the new characters that were introduced in this second book. I really liked O’fin, a young boy who befriends Emmeline. Demyan was also an intriguing character. He is basically an assassin, but knows quite a bit about Incenagas (witches). I really wasn't sure what his end game would be and why he was working with Tiergan and Orinda. I'm sure we'll see more of Orinda in the next book. I would tell you who she is, but that is a bit of a spoiler, so I'll have to leave it at that.

I didn't want Tiergan to have it quite so easy or Erick to be somewhere else, but I was cheering for Emmeline. She didn’t always listen to me and do what I wanted her to do (characters tend to do that to me in books sometimes). ;) It gets a little intense towards the end. Overall, an exciting read.

Content was clean.

I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I want to be honest, I love this cover better than book one but I enjoyed book one better overall. This was still a great read and despite it being more action packed it was a slower read for me. I did enjoy the pirate aspect of the story. I hope in book three we get a bit more romance. I know that Emmeline and Erick love each other but they haven't had any "love scenes" or even assumed "love scenes". I just want to hurry up and read book three.
Emmeline hasn't changed since book one, she is still the perfect heroine, willing to sacrifice herself to save others. I can't wait to find out more about her powers. She needs to grow into them fully. I'm excited to see how Orida will complete her goal now. I am going to assume that she will become the next villain. O'fin is my new favourite character because much like our heroine, he is about as brave as they come, but I want to hear his story too!
The Underground Witch is another great read by Debbie Dee to add to your TBR lists. I would recommend this book to fantasy lovers. I am very excited for book three and to see where everything goes and ends up.

Aside from a few editorial mistakes, (mainly punctuation errors) the book was fantastic. It's not often that I enjoy the second book as much as I did the first, but in this case, the second was just as good. I liked how the characters were developed, and she introduced new characters with ease. I really can't wait for the next book; this one was left on a bit of a cliffhanger. I'd definitely recommend these books. I intend to!
