How do you cope when the people you care for hurt you the most? When the way you feel on the outside, smothers you on the inside. And when you are left to face your demons alone, will you learn that only you have the power to overcome them?

Charlie has never had it easy. Between the constant moving and the incessant fat comments and jokes from her father, her self-worth is nonexistent. Her reflection in the mirror shows her nothing but a plain Jane. Music is the only thing that keeps her sanity in check.

Charlie catches the eye of the town star quarterback, Maverick. With her curves, her brunette hair, and the voice of an angel, Maverick has never met anyone like her. Everything that is different about Charlie just makes Maverick like her more. Unfortunately, Charlie doesn’t see it herself.

Proving it to her may deem harder than he thinks, especially when tragedy strikes and tears them apart.

Now standing on her own two feet she may finally learn exactly who she is, what’s she’s capable of and how very un plain Jane she really is.

I'm going to start by stating that this book was Heather Gunter's debut novel and I have to say she knocked it out of the park. I thought this book was fabulous. I am a totally sucker for a sweet YA love story that is based in high school. Sometimes it is totally refreshing to read a book about the love and feelings in a relationship without all the sexual content interfering. With that said I will say that even though Maverick is to young for me, he still made my book boyfriend list. He was so sweet and amazing, even if he does screw up for a short time. In this book Heather touches on the very serious subject of abuse. Now when I say abuse everyone just assumes that I am talking about physical abuse but not in this case. Heather shows us a side of verbal abuse that is just as damaging as physical abuse can be. What Charlie has to endure at the hands/mouth of her father was just horrible. I truly wanted to drop kick her dad so many times in this book. We do finally find out why her dad is so horrible to her but to me it's just not a valid reason to treat someone that way. Her mother is just as bad. I don't want to say much more on that subject just because I think everyone should read this book to get the full idea and feelings this book has to offer. I was so proud of Charlie by the end of the book and so happy that she realized she needs to work on herself to make herself happy. I know I listed this as a HFN ending because the way the books ends you just know that Charlie is a good place but that there is more there. I was thankful that Heather included the Prologue of the next book Heartstrings, because that really wraps up the end of Love Notes. It explains what came about with both Charlie and Maverick. I thought Tori was an amazing friend and character. I loved how she stood next to Charlie no matter what and never judged her. I look forward to reading her book when it comes out. I'm dying to know her secret.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Love Notes is a beautiful YA debut from Into the Night Reviews very own Heather Gunter. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to read an ARC prior to release for this review. In Love Notes Gunter very successfully tackles the challenging subject of self esteem and the impact others have on how we see ourselves.

Charlie has spent her whole life hearing about her short falls. Her weight, her looks, her everything – in the eyes of her father, she just doesn’t measure up. Due to her dad's job, Charlie and her family move every few years. For Charlie, frequently being the 'new girl' at school is hard work, particularly with her lack of confidence, so she tends to try and fly under the radar. With all the moving around Charlie hasn’t had the opportunity to develop lasting friendships and reap the benefits that come with them, nor does she realise that her experiences at home at not 'normal'. With next to no self esteem, and counting down the days of her senior year in high school at yet another new school, the last thing Charlie expects is to catch the eye of the football captain.

Maverick is not your typical ‘jock’. Unlike many he’s not into meaningless flings with the girls that throw themselves at him. He’s focussed on his football, maintaining his grades and moving on to college with his football scholarship. On the first day of school he literally runs into Charlie, knocking her flat on her backside. And immediately his interest is piqued.

Love Notes takes us on a development journey of friendships, relationships, self esteem and much more. Charlie has to come to grips with the fact that her self perception is challenged by others and is perhaps not what it should be. Maverick has to consider his love of football, his dream to play in college and its place in his future. And both of them have to work out if they can be there for each other as they do this.

Told from both Charlie and Maverick's points of view we get to see both characters perceptions and understand their perspectives. I am a big fan of this style as it gives great insight into the experiences of both characters and for me, allows the reader to develop a stronger connection with them both, as opposed to only one. The relationship between the two evolves beautifully as Maverick slowly nurtures some confidence into Charlie’s battered self esteem. But just as things are starting to look up, tragedy strikes and threatens not only the relationship but Charlie’s already limited sense of self worth.

Gunter has created some absolutely delightful characters in Love Notes – Maverick is everything a girl could hope for in a boyfriend. Tori, Charlie’s new found BFF is to die for. Her wit and sass are perfect and she manages to cajole Charlie out of her shell very effectively, all the while harboring a secret of her own. Will, Maverick’s best friend is also fabulous – calling Maverick on his crap when he least expects it - precisely what you want from someone who’s known you all your life.

In Charlie I think Gunter has accurately created a girl who has had a life time of put downs – she has a good balance of insecurity and yet hope. The impact of such consistent criticism from one of the two people you look to for unconditional love cannot be underestimated and I think the strength of character Charlie shows is worthy of great admiration. I loved how the changes in Charlie were progressive, this made her character so realistic and believable. I was particularly impressed with Charlie towards the end of the book – there were a couple of scenes that required great courage and she stepped up really well.

Love Notes is a touching YA story about developing a sense of self worth that I just loved. Despite a lifetime of negative messages, and with the help of her new found friends, Charlie shows that nothing is insurmountable. A beautiful first effort from Gunter. It's a relatively quick read, perfect to settle down with on an afternoon when you don't want to think too hard about what you're reading, but rather relax and just get lost in a sweet love story. Gunter finishes the book with a teaser for Heart Strings, book two in the series which tells Tori’s story and I am definitely looking forward to it. And for those of you that don't like cliffhangers, don’t be concerned ;)

Not for me - I think I am too old for this as it felt much more like a YA book which is fine but just not my jam. It's worth noting that I bought this book in 2013!!
I won't rate it as I don't think it would be fair because I bailed after two chapters. I won't add to my reading challenge either...

THREE AND A HALF STARS!

why yes, I cheated and just edited screencaps of OTH for my edit

I quite enjoyed this book. It was a much needed change of pace from my usual erotic romances that I welcomed it with opened arms. Whilst Love Notes wouldn't win any awards for originality, I was still charmed by the simple story of the school's heart throb falling head over heels in love with the insecure, curvy new girl in town.

I liked both Charlie and Maverick and found them so absolutely sweet together. Maverick is a great character and the way he is with Charlie had me smiling. That kid sure has a way with words.
"Charlie, I wish you could see what I see - you're just perfect for me."
But as sweet as I found Maverick, the standout mc for me would definitely have to be Charlie. I couldn't help but identify with her while reading, the embarrassment and shame that arose from being picked on by the mean girls in school, something that I was definitely familiar with growing up. But what got to me the most was her dismal home life.

I can't deny the real emotions that churned in me after reading about Charlie's dysfunctional family life. Its sad to see the distance in her relationship with her mother and her father, but even more sadder to see the effect that it has on her self-esteem, having absolutely no support system whatsoever and despite all reason, yearning for more from her parents. Because of this, I absolutely could not fault Charlie for her inability to handle compliments directed at her, nor for her reaction after the plot twist at the 50% mark. And I was more than happy for her when she was determined to find her self-worth via her own agency rather than through her boyfriend.

So, why not five stars? While it was enjoyable, it didn't knock me head over heels. I wasn't even mad at the insta-love, or the somewhat unnecessary drama that arose from Maverick's massive pout over his future prospects; but there was just something missing from the writing that I needed. There were also some editing mistakes that my eyes obviously couldn't stop from zooming in on, but wasn't too much of a distraction for me.

Overall, Love Notes is a good read that I would recommend to YA lovers. I think it has a great message overall for the youths of today and I wish more YA authors would send more empowering messages such as this to young girls.

Let someone love you just as you are. As flawed as you might be, as unattractive as you might feel, as unaccomplished as you might think you are, let someone love you just as you are. And let that someone be YOU!

this is a ya book for actual young adults, not full grown adults like myself who are fans on the genre. this story is very sweet, and i could see how it would help a teenager with self esteems issues, but it is repetitive, simplistic, and rushed. it felt like the author is probably a fan of the genre and picked parts from other stories they liked and then put them together, there is nothing original about this story.

OMG there are no words that can accurately express Love Notes by Heather Gunter. She has transcended the heart, emotions, of one girl and the lives she has touched without even knowing it. I truly could relate to the main character Charlie in the story. I was the fat, ugly girl in high school the only difference between us is I never had a Mav and Torie. All the emotions were made so alive with Charlie constantly not feeling worthy of love when you have JERKS (had to use the nice words) for parents. The author was able to capture your heart to fully immerse you into a very emotional and captivating story. There has never been a book that I could fully relate and connect with than this story. Crying, laughing, anger, all those emotions are felt for in the story between Charlie, Maverick and couldn't forget Torie. My favorite saying from the story was when Mav left a rose and a note on Charlie's car.

"Dear Charlie I wanted to leave you with something to think about. The yellow rose is a symbol of friendship, where we are starting. However, the red around the tips if the petals means that I have feelings that I would like to see grow into more. Please remember our talk from earlier, I meant every damn word.

Your friend, but hopefully not for much longer.

Mav "

How could you not love this book. I feel that it will also help others realize that although people will be there to tear you down there will always be some that will carry you forward with love and acceptance. But, ultimately you must learn to see yourself through your eyes and know that you are special. I cannot begin to tell you how highly I recommend this book and I can guarantee that I absolutely can't wait for book 2 Heart Strings which the author has graciously gave us a small tastes. I can't wait to hear Torie's story. I also have to mention another plus in this books favor is the absolutely beautiful cover.

"...Looking up in the dictionary what self-worth meant. This is what it says:
Self-worth: the sense of one's own value or worth as a person; self-esteem; self respect
It struck a chord with me and made me think. I alone define my own self-worth. Not a boy, but me. No one else can make me feel good about myself. My own personal value is what matters, not what anyone else thinks or says. But mine."

Pretty much sums up everything about this book. Never, ever be told you are ugly or stupid or worthless. You are none of those things. Everyone is special. And only you, and you alone, can make this true.

There are so many Charlies in the world. No matter the age, the race or even gender, remember you are beautiful, inside and out.

Dear Heather,

I came across your book on Smashwords. I was looking for a book, that I am pretty sure did not have love or notes in the title, so I was pretty surprised when Love Notes was my search result. I read the synopsis and knew instantly that I needed to read it. What I read was nothing that I was expecting, it brought forth so many past emotions that I couldn't help but fall in love with it.

“You clearly don't care if you repulse anyone. You really should have tried harder to lose weight. I think you may have gained a few pounds over the summer. You’re dismissed."

It was that sentence that made me audibly gasp, "Oh my god, this poor girl." I knew at that moment things are more than likely going to get worse, before they got better. My heart hurt for her and not just because of the obvious reasons but, because I was in her shoes at one point in my life. The way you told things from Charlie's POV, were raw and exposed. I could feel the emptiness that Charlie felt, the confusion of not knowing what she is doing to cause such hostility from someone that is supposed to love her unconditionally.

"Not only do I bump into this person, I fall and I fall hard! I tumble all the way straight down on my very padded ass. This was not the first impression I was going for. Without even looking up I feel mortified and am internally slapping myself for my stupidity. The instant that I look up I’m captivated by a set of perfectly bright blue eyes."

With Charlie's last year of High School, she seems to make a great first impression on the popular boy at school, Maverick. I loved how you brought Maverick's POV to the story. To see Charlie through his eyes, to see what her father has made her feel verses what she really looks like. Now, my favorite thing about this story, you didn't make Charlie become miraculously cured of her body image issues. I have read so many books where in the beginning of the book, the female has self-esteem issues and when the popular guy or millionaire playboy says, "You’re so hot, I wanna do you", poof she's Cinderella and never again thinks she's ugly.

"What he doesn't understand, is that I still can't believe that this is real. That this guy actually likes me. I have a hard time looking at myself in the mirror, let alone a guy like Maverick thinking of me as pretty—more than pretty. I can't escape how I feel about myself and automatically forget everything that I’ve dealt at home, just because some hot guy shows interest in me. I’m trying, but it isn't easy and it still feels like a dream that I could wake up from, at any moment"

Maverick had to work really hard to get her. I'm sure he would have had to work a lot harder if it hadn't been for Tori. The girl who sees something in Charlie that Charlie hides from the world. I loved Tori. How she took a hold of Charlie and tried to make her see the amazing person that she is. When Tori and Maverick tell Charlie how beautiful she is, I could see the disbelief on Charlie's face. I could feel her reluctance to believe the words. Her father constantly telling her she's worthless, was definitely not working in Maverick or Tori's favor.

This story that you wrote, is nothing short of incredible. Authors like you are why I read, why I love reading. You exposed yourself. You opened yourself to the world and let them see every imperfection, we often hide. For that I Thank You. Things that you wrote in this book, I related to on so many levels. The part where Maverick meets her parents was like reliving every moment I had to bring a friend home. Charlie living two different lives, one where she is carefree and happy at school and the girl that goes home hoping she will never run into her tormentor.

I didn't go looking for your book but, your book found me. This story will forever be close to my heart. Thank You, for writing a story for every person out there that has ever been made to feel like they are less than the person they are. That no matter how people hurt us and make us feel unworthy, that there is always someone standing there to say, "You’re beautiful to me."

"I alone define my own self-worth. Not a boy, but me. No one else can make me feel good about myself. My own personal value is what matters, not what anyone else thinks or says. But mine."

Love notes by Heather Gunter

I don't know how I can describe this book other than to say its amazing....The writer created a story that will make you cry, extremely pissed off, and giggly happy.

I absolutely love Charlie and Maverick's characters. Charlie has a tough life she is verbally abused by her father and ignored by her mother. Her father seems to hate her but Charlie doesn't understand why. Charlie lives a life of sadness, of self loathing, and Loneliness When a sexy guy pays her attention and calls her gorgeous and loves her she can't come to terms with it, she doesn't believe it.

Maverick is the captain of the football team, sexy as sin and wanted by every girl in the school. He has the most loving parents and has friends galore. But all he wants is Charlie. He thinks she's perfect, beautiful, sweet and amazing.

The author writes a touching story of a beautiful, caring girl who thinks the worst of herself, she thinks she's fat and ugly and never had anyone in her life to tell her different. I felt for Charlie from the beginning. I wanted to be her BFF, I wanted to tell her how beautiful and wonderful she is. I loved that Tori took her under her wing. Tori is a best friend that everyone needs. She made Charlie feel wanted, and cared for and was always there to catch her when she falls. I had a great friend in high school like that and I tell you it makes life better. I enjoyed the relationship between Charlie and Maverick , from the first hello, to the first kiss, to the I loves you then to the pushing each other away. This story has it all. This author is a amazing writer and will go far. I have to give it a 5 star but love to give it more...can't wait for book 2.....

Bleh....

It was alright.

The plot is good, but the dialogue feels pretty awful, felt like a middle schooler wrote this book.

Everything seems down pat, the pieces fit too nicely together, it makes the whole thing unreal.

On the other hand, i do like the topic being discussed. Verbal abuse do happen and not a lot of people realize how this is actually prominent in our society. It's not something we can measure or place a statistics on coz its not like we put people in jail for verbally abusing someone.

Maverick is too perfect to be real.
Charlie is well I dont know, a sweet girl but a tad of a weakling.
Tori has balls and I love her.
Will is sooo in love with Tori and is an amazing friend to Maverick.

Ending seems abrupt and a little bit of a letdown.

Not sure if I'll be picking up the next book in the series, but i am really curious with the past and future developments between Maverick's friend Will and Charlie's friend Tori.

I'm a little peeved after reading this one, i feel a little mislead by the reviews. First and foremost I want to say that I really wanted to LOVE this book because of the other reviews on amazon are all five stars. Sadly I didn't, that being said I didn't hate it either I'm just kind of meh about it. My feelings on this one mostly stem from the fact that it all seemed very rushed to me. Everything from the friendship with Tori to the quick relationship with Mav, to the story itself. It didn't really slow down until the end and it was just kind of abrupt. The story was just lacking something to earn five stars from me. Not really sure if I'd recommend at this time.

What a fantastic book, from a debuting author. Everything about this book made my heart cry, smile, and scream for joy! I was so taken with each of the characters, they're so very real and relatable. The way Author Heather Gunter writes is refreshing and beautiful.

Charlie is a girl after my own heart. I was so totally wrapped up in her story, that I fell deeply in love with her. Life hasn't been easy for her. Her father is a complete tool, who belittles and berates her constantly. If it isn't one thing it is the next, with him. What killed me is all of this berating causes Charlie to have very low self-esteem. You know that song by TLC Unpretty? Well I could picture this song being written specifically for Charlie to say to her father. The funny thing about her is she is so darn beautiful. Inside and out. But she just doesn't see it. Ugh, her father really did a beating on her heart and soul....Now if only she could see what other people see.

Maverick is wonderful. It is always nice when an author brings a popular football star into a story and makes him very real and relatable. He is the epitome of High School tog dog. He has everything he wants at his fingertips. Girls, a scholarship, and an awesome family! But one thing he is lacking is letting someone into his heart. As much as he could have any pick of the chicks at his school, he has never jumped into the commitment party. Until he runs right smack dab into the new chick at his HS. Can she be the one?

Mav and Charlie are such a great pair. You never know what will happen until you test the waters. But with Charlie, she never thought she could be worthy of anyones heart. Mav on the other hand knows Charlie is worthy. Mav really makes Charlie feel like she is the most gorgeous girl ever. This made me swoon so much! He couldn't be any sweeter! Only sometimes all good things take a turn for the worse. In this case, life throws Mav and Charlie a curve-ball. Can they overcome these complications? Will they be able to be happy again? Or will Charlie feel that this whole relationship was just a hoax?

I am in awe that this is Author Heather Gunter's debuting novel. It was a light, sweet, and nerving read. I couldn't believe how this book completely pulled at my heart-strings. There was one scene, where I bawled like a baby. It was pure, innocent, and down right sweet. Please go out and get yourself a copy of this wonderful novel, immediately. You will not be disappointed!! I give this book 4.5 Stars!

It would seem lately I'm a glutton for Ya contemporary romance some have been good, some have been outstanding and others, well lets just say I felt my brain melting whilst reading them.
Love notes is a mixture of all three:

The best part for me was the themes used:

*recognizing verbal abuse at home, child abuse.
* Learning how to except love, loving someone for who they are rather than just how they look.
* learning to love yourself
* Standing up for yourself and seeking help after tragedy or abuse

These were issues mentioned or used within the plot in Love notes, I'm glad these points were made and shown sensitively. I don't think these topics are mentioned enough in ya books.

The actual book itself for me was nondescript. Characters felt like they'd been picked up out of some American teen drama, generic, done to death type characters. The writing was fine, it didn't inspire any actually emotional response from me. Though I fully support it's efforts to raise awareness of verbal abuse from family and peers.
The romance was sweet but predictable but so was most of the plot.
2.5 stars at best.

I hate it when this happens, hate it so much!

I was supposed to like this.....
Everyone else did.....
It had so much promise......

I hate it when this happens, hate it so much!

It all comes down to this one word: HYPE.. You see the raving reviews, read about people's gushing thoughts about how fabulous a book is, but when you finally finish it, you are so completely and utterly disappointed. Honestly, I'm sick of hype right now because when the book doesn't live up to your expectations, you tend to over exaggerate how flawed it was.

Really this book wasn't that bad, sure it was written like a high schooler and the characters were a bit flat, but there were some good aspects, such as the storyline. But becaus of the stupid hype that surrounded this, I think it's far worse worse.......

My conclusion: this could have been great, but I was let down.

Stupid hype!

I was not prepared to cry with this book. The girl is Charlie and the boy is Maverick. I love these names. Very original:) The main Charlie suffered so much with her parents and the abuse she endured was horrible. Each time her dad spoke to her I saw red towards him and then felt pain for Charlie. Nobody and I mean nobody deserves to be treated in such a way. Unfortunately, this crap happens all the time behind closed doors. Anybody that turns their head the other way is just as responsible for the abuse. Yes sometimes it may be ignored by the authorities but it's better knowing that you tried to do something to help rather than nothing at all. I have a personal experience with something similar that was going on with a family member and yes some of them got mad at me and don't talk to me anymore. I don't care and I would do it again. As far as the verbal abuse, my ex talked to me the same way Charlie's dad did. This is the father of my only daughter. But you know what?? I took it for about 2 years and then finally I had a friend that was disappointed in me. She wasn't mad but disappointed which hurt worse...I finally woke up and said NO MORE!!!! I did exactly what Charlie did, and the moment she stuck up for herself is when I started crying. It takes a lot of strength to do something like she did. I remember being scared shitless and didn't think I could be a single mother but I finally realized I deserved to be treated better than the way he was treating me. This book was not just some love story about two young people. It had a very important subject matter written in it and I give a HUGE KUDOS to the author. I fell in love with Maverick and Tori. Maverick is in no way the typical jock, and I like that. The way he treats her and makes sure that she knows that she is beautiful and wonderful was so touching. I wish there were more Mavericks in my school:) Now I'm hooked and can't wait for the next book about Tori and Will. Something is there between them and I can't wait to find out what the deal is with Tori not giving him the time of day.

So much to say about this sweet book!!! And it 's FREE right now on Amazon!!! Free People!!

I picked this book up not really knowing anything about it other than seeing the cover and thinking it looked promising. Last night I wanted something to read before I went to bed and this one was calling to me so I clicked on it again, planning to just read a few chapters and going to sleep. Yeah, didn't happen. I stayed up 'til 4am and read the WHOLE thing!! I couldn't stop reading, this book hooked me from the beginning and I had to see it to the end! Well worth being groggy this morning. Nothing better than a book hangover...

Before I get into the characters, I need to explain that this story is a YA. It is about high schoolers and takes place the majority of the book at their high school. With that, expect a younger more sweet innocent romance. It wasn't a steamy read but it definitely had me swooning from the genuine feelings Charlie and Maverick share. Hands off to Heather Gunter for making a High School Romance that is appropriate for HS kids to read with deeper seeds left throughout the book. Its just the type of book these kids need at this age, but also had enough to make a twentysomething appreciate it and fall in love as well.

Charlie is the new girl in school. She's a senior and is not a geek but would rather be at school than at home so she doesn't have to be around her parents. They are mean to put it lightly, so be prepared to want to protect Charlie.

Maverick is a hero. Literally. I might prefer the "bad boys" for the thrill, but there is something to say for the good guys. He is a really good guy and you can't help but fall in love with Maverick and his sweet words to get Charlie out of her shell.

It had everything to make a great book. Fast-paced writing style that kept me reading, characters that you can't help but swoon over and want to hold their hands just so they know they are not alone, enough heartache to break my heart and slowly put it back together, and inspiration to be a better person and stand up to people who are verbally abused. And did I mention it was all FREE!!! Get this book!

Free download. This book is a beautiful love story, but its more than that. Charlie is a 17 year old girl who has a humiliating family life. She see's herself as plain, boring and fat, this has been beat into her by a father who constantly puts her down. Her mother never defends her and always lets her father have the last word. As a family they move around a lot thanks to her fathers job, but Charlie has never been more thankful for this final move before college. On her first day of school she literally bumps into Maverick, and the connection is instant. Although she fights it, she can't understand why the football star would look at her twice, but with a bit of encouragement from her first and only friend Tori, she begins a relationship with Maverick. She is constantly bombarded with feelings of no self worth but finally begins to feel like his feelings are real. After a shocking incident things change, feelings are tested, and Charlie finally see's what she should have all along, and gains the courage to understand herself and why her family treat her the way they do. It pushes her to confront her own problem and deal with it. I really enjoyed this book, I think it has a really important message for young people and anyone who is dealing with this same emotional abuse. The characters are great, and the story and plot are truly believable. I would recommend to anybody who enjoys a great read, a beautiful love story and a truly emotional story.

Love Notes by Heather Gunter
I received this book in exchange for a honest unbiased review~

Okay this is the first book I have read by this author. This book is wonderful easy fast paced read that delves into the emotions of a verbally abused young girl who thinks the worst of herself due to the bashings she gets from her parents. This book speaks to me on multiple levels- one being that I experienced verbal abuse from my peers (as seen in this book), and two- seen some derogatory statements at times from family members (not in the extreme as in the book. I connected with Charlie's character emotional since I have some of the experiences she does. The insecurity she feels you can feel it too which I also experienced it. Lovely read about how a girl can change how she sees herself and better her future by standing up for herself. I loved this read and sends a good message about self worth. I absolutely can't wait for the next book. I so want to learn what happened between Tori and Will and also about the future for Mav and Charlie. I love how you can see the story from Mav and Charlie's POV it makes the story much better since you get to get an in-depth look at them and their emotions. I give this read a 5 star review!! Love it!

I'm surprised I didn't like this because there were many good reviews on goodreads and amazon. I think a part of it was the grammatical errors that popped up every couple of sentences. The author seems to love "at the moment" or something like that because she used it five times in one chapter. The characters were unbelievable and while I understand the importance to bringing awareness to bullying, I felt like it didn't match up. The author seemed to have an idea, which was good, I think, but she didn't achieve heart. I don't know. Maybe these characters were just too young for me. Anyways, I probably won't be reading her other work because I feel that the grammatical errors were way too frequent and not worth my money.

I was looking forward to this book before it even came out. I one-clicked on the release day and read it in one sitting. This was a beautifully written story about an verbally abused girl Charlie (who is beautiful) Then there is Maverick the handsome football star who actually doesn't date just for looks.. It was such a nice change from the typical stories we have had out. There were the best friends Will and Tori who I loved and they were great additions to this book.. I think this was a very well written story about abuse that had such a great love story written in it. CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE FROM HEATHER GUNTER.. :)way to come out with a bang..

Wow. What an emotional story this turned out to be. I fully expected the angst that comes with books centered around characters in high school, but Love Notes was something altogether more than that. You can't turn on the news nowadays without hearing a story about bullying. This is a hot topic at the moment, but in Love Notes the bullying comes from the most unlikely of places. Charlie's own parents.

“Self-worth: the sense of one's own value or worth as a person; self-esteem; self-respect.”

I want to make this clear right off the bat, before I go any further. I have never hated two characters more in my entire life. Charlie's parents are straight from the pits of hell. Her father, more so than her mother, but both are equally to blame in my eyes. The emotional abuse that is thrust upon Charlie is more than anybody could ever handle, let alone a teenager. And the sad part is that I can so see this type of scenario playing out in many families. Maybe not all to the highest degree, such as in Charlie's case, but emotional abuse is a real issue faced by many people. And Heather Gunter has managed to take a quite series topic, and find a way for her character to find acceptance and love through the help of others. I truly hope that if somebody who faces this issue is able to read this book, and that it helps them to know there is life after the abuse.

“I pull my iPod out of my backpack and plug it in. It's the first thing I do every time I get in it, like a ritual. Music soothes the soul; at least it helps soothe mine.”

Okay, now with the hard hitting message out of the way, let us talk about the characters. Charlie and Maverick. Charlie is so very sweet, kind and exactly what any well being parents would wish for as a daughter. Maverick is also sweet, understanding, and considerate. Even with him being the star quarterback, he is not what you would expect if you were to think of this type of character.

Together they are adorable, and they had me smiling on more than one occasion. This is very much a Young Adult title and I am happy to see that nothing it taken too far. I mean don't get me wrong, I love my steamy romances but I do believe there is a limit as to how far romance should be pushed for characters at this age. And Love Notes has just the right amount of romance, and may I add it is so very sweet. We are talking hearts, flowers and of course love notes.

“How is it that a kiss can say so much?

Saying I love you is huge, but to kiss someone who has told you that means everything. A kiss speaks the truth, and I know. I know in his kisses, that he means every single word.”

The side characters, Tori and Will are both loveable. Tori is one hell of a friend to Charlie, and as soon as they met I knew they would be best friends for life. They just click, and I was so happy that Charlie found that bond because God knows she has never had it before. Will is completely smitten with Tori, but as we find out they did try to date once. Something happened however, and their feelings for each other are a constant undercurrent in this book. Thankfully they will get to tell their own story in Heart Strings, which at the time of this review is due to be published in September 2013.

“Shutting the door, I look around and see clusters of groups all over the parking lot. Every school is different. You generally have your skaters, preps, jocks with cheerleaders of course, nerds and over achievers. I also see a heard of rednecks, it's Georgia after all.”

Now for my only criticism. Love Notes really could have benefited from being a bit longer. I get the whole 'insta love' thing and to be honest it really doesn't throw me for a loop. When I read I am the queen of suspension of disbelief. I read for enjoyment, and as long as I am enjoying myself I do not find it hard to believe most things. So, no... the fact that Charlie and Mav instantly fall in love is not my issue. I just feel like the characters would have benefited from a bit more substance.

As mentioned above, the book really centers around a serious topic. I think if it would have been made longer and the characters were introduced to each other at a bit more slower pace, it would have benefited the overall story. Did the insta love ruin it? No of course not. These are just my thoughts on what would have improved an already great story.

“Charlie looks at me, like she wants to say something, but she then seems to decide against it. "Maybe I'll see you later," she says as she walks by.

I holler back at her, "Oh, you'll see me.”

Overall, I really enjoyed Love Notes, and I truly believe it will go on to help people who face emotional abuse. The story is heart warming, and in the end you will be happy with the journey it has taken you on.

I think I could of spent months reading a story about Maverick and Charlie. It was such a refreshing story, although my heart broke so many times and my traitorous eyes pooled up tears. Such a good story about insecurities, friendships, love, loss, pain, heart break and yes abuse. That was NOT a good part, that broke my heart. I cringed at every nasty thing Charlie's father said to her and to know she was so weak and beaten that she believed it all and feared the repercussions of standing up for herself. It made my stomach roll in disgust that her mother was so hung up on the wicked man that she hid her head in the sand like a ostrich. She is so freaking pathetic! They both had me fueling so much rage I wanted to....

Maverick was definitely not your typical hot, star quarterback. I loved him, he was so sweet, caring and gave Charlie what she needed. Fate stepped in for Charlie in the form of Maverick and Tori.

Tori was the fiery red head. She didn't conform to the standard like most of the girls In The school. She stood out and was a Awesome friend to Charlie. I really liked her. Even Will was great, he was Mavericks best friend and became a good friend to Charlie too. Now I and so curious what happened between him and Tori. I think they would be great together but something happened and now I nee to know what.

I wanted to know so much more about the lives if Charlie and Maverick. Did she heal, did her and Maverick get back together. Do they go onto college, what does he do now that he can't play football. Do they get married, have Babies. Does Maverick go knock the light out of the horrible. Filthy scum of a man. Yea I like to know a lot.

For most of the story in the beginning I was just....

And...

Then when Maverick comes in and their relationship takes off I was.....

But every time she went home my heart broke for her and I was again angry.

I didn't want to but I .....

It was just so hard not to. Charlie endures so much.

I could go on and on with the review but I won't so I don't give anything away. You will have to read it. It's worth it.

I really enjoyed Love Notes by Heath.er Gunter. I was pleasantly surprised by the books material. Being emotionally abused by someone who is supposed to love you unconditionally, is a real shot through the heart. Not only does the book focus on such issues but we forget how hard it is to be a young teenage girl. I thought the characters were very fresh and raw. It was a real eye opening story that I definitely could identify with.

Charlie is constantly moving around with her parents. She has never stayed in one place very long. She starts her first day of high school in a small town in Georgia. Her home life is less appealing and she is counting down the days till she can go away to college. The first day she ends up crossing paths with Maverick, the star football player. Seems he is drawn to her and wants to get to know her. She can't believe it and it definitely takes some convincing on his part. He has a lot of work ahead of him, no one has ever told her she was worth something. She has been constantly verbally abused at home. The thing is everything she has been told is nothing further from the truth. She is beautiful inside and out! That is the way Maverick sees her. Now it's all up to Charlie if she belives him or not.

I liked this story most for it's characters and issues. I felt for Charlie, I mean I felt like crying for her. I also thought sh was a very strong willed character throughout the book. When she was happy I was happy, and when she was sad I was sad too. Maverick on the other hand was such a beautiful boy. His parents showed him love and affection. That is exactly what he gave to Charlie. Something she never expierienced before. Something that some of us take for granted I think. These two were a beautiful pair. I believe that they could get through anything life throws at them. One that is strong and unbreakable.

This should definitely be read without a doubt. It is emotional, raw, and about so much more then music.

I could read their story over and over again. I loved Charlie and Maverick story. Their story pins me in my seat till the last page. Its very hurtful to find out the way Charlie's kind of living. His so called Dad hit her a very unacceptable verbal assualts to her, the way he attack her with his dick and abusive words hits me very low. And for her mother who didn't do a damnest thing to potect her, I could kill them in an instant the way they treated her. No son or daugther should EVER experienced like that. They are bot cruel. But sadly this verbal abuse happens in every home. Children like Charlie's age can't do a thing but ti endure all the physial and emotional abuse they could ever get. I beleved GOD will send someone in our lives to help you out in this life. And I'm so glad for Maverick, Tori, Will, Shelby, Carol and Maverick's dad . These people are truly an angel in Charlie's life.

Its going to be a long road to take for Charlie before sge can finally move on and same oes to Maverick. What happen to him will help him to realized what other things he could besides football. And happy to know that his senses came back that he did everything for getting back to Charlie.

You will never be categorized as perfect if you have perfect blond hair, porcelain skin, big tits, slim waist, curvy ass if you have those qualities that you have or want to have. Sometimes being content for what you have right now is enough. For me I can brutally say to you guys that I don't have those but actually the opposite. being sick for almost my whole life, simply breathing the next morning and seeing my beautiful son is enough inspight of the circumstances that we have and that I'm very thankful each day.

You did a marvelous job Heather for creating such a beautiful story of Charlie and Maverick. I'm so excited for Tori and Will's story. Again great job Heather!!!!!

What an emotional roller coaster. In this book we are shown an ugly side of life. Abuse is abuse whether it is physical or mental. We meet Charlie, a beautiful girl inside and out. The only problem is she doesn’t see it, being emotionally abused at the hand of those that are supposed to love her the most. I’m still trying to figure out who I despise the most, her father who breaks her every chance he gets, or her mother who sits by and does nothing. They’re both just evil and don’t deserve her beauty. Charlie starts a new school yet again, thinking let’s get through this year and I’m gone. Well this year is different and she has no idea what the universe has in store for her. She meets two people who will turn her world upside down and bring out the real Charlie. Tori is a no holds barred tell you how it is girl and a perfect best friend for Charlie. Maverick is a beautiful man who has a way with words that makes you feel like you’re the only woman on earth and the perfect man for Charlie. It was truly beautiful to watch Charlie’s journey of self worth. It was like watching a beautiful swan who thought she was an ugly duckling realize she always was a beautiful swan. When things finally come to a head with her parents, she finds out she had paid for her mother’s mistake all her life. Through this journey she realizes before she can truly love anyone else she must love herself. Maverick makes a promise to be there when she finally sees what he had seen all along and is ready to be his Charlie.

This book should serve as a message to let those that we love know that they are beautiful, handsome and irreplaceable.

Love Notes starts out with Charlie just moving to a new town and having to start her senior year in high school. She's used to new schools, and she's never really had any real friends before so she's not really afraid of it. However, what she's not used to his a guy take notice of her. And that is immediately what happens.

Maverick has never had real feelings for a girl before, but now he literally runs into a beautiful girl who instantly has him intrigued. This girl is so beautiful, but she doesn't even know it. She smart, funny, sweet, and a little sassy too. And Maverick does everything he can to get her to go out with him.

They instantly start a beautiful (but slow) romance. The only thing is Charlie has problems at home. Her father is verbal abusive to her. He calls her ugly, fat, and stupid every day. And Charlie doesn't know how to live any way else. She also doesn't believe anyone can think she's pretty or smart because of living with her father for so long. As the story continues through Charlie and Mavericks journey, they each have their ups and downs but it is a beautifully sad story to read. And in the end, it ended happy.

Overall this book was very very good. The author did a wonderful job of describing how damaged Charlie is, and what she has to go through every day. It was heartbreaking. And it was good to see Charlie actually find people who care about her. I'm also excited to see more of Charlie, Maverick and their friends in the next book.

This book ripped my heart out. I had to take a day to compose myself.
Oh I just wanted to jump into my iPad and do some seriously bodily harm on Charlie's parents. Poor darling Charlie has lived a life in hell being verbally abused by her dad and just before college she starts a new school.
Where she finally has a new friend,Tori, she is sweet, sassy and funny.
But Charlie has caught someone else's eye, Maverick -star football player.
This book is their story, the love that these two have for each other you could call instantaneous, but still really believable. Charlie has no self confidence, no self worth and between Mav and Tori they build her up and she smiles and is happy again.
Tragedy strikes- will these two get their happily ever after or not? You'll have to read it and find out!

Heather Gunter has done an absolutely outstanding job on her debut novel.
The characters are so well developed and charismatic.
This book is YA and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to each and everyone of my friends and likers of my blog.

"Let someone love you just the way you are. As flawed as you might be, as unattractive as you might feel, as unaccomplished as you might think you are; let someone love you just the way you are. And let that someone be YOU! -Sandra Kring
I really enjoyed this book. Maverick is such a sweet heart, he reminds me alot of my husband in high school. I can definitely relate to this story, I too was abused(both verbal and physical) my stepfather while I was in high school and my only solice was when I was away from home with my friends or boyfriend(who is now my husband of 16 yrs). I'm so glad that Charlie finally stood up ti her "dad", I too had to do the same thing and I went to live with my grandma. Maverick and Charlie fell in love quick, but that's just the way love goes sometimes; you can't stop it, slow it down or prevent it, just let it happen which is exactly what they did. I love scene where he sings to her at school and afterward at the lake. I'm very excited for the next book for more of their story and to find out what is going on between Will and Tori.
