However, the island isn’t as deserted as she first thinks. A handsome stranger brings her food that couldn’t possibly grow there; but he always disappears at night and when it rains. Something tells her he isn’t what he appears, but ancient forces and her fear of the ocean stand in the way of satisfying her heart.

This book really captured my attention from the beginning to the end. I loved the characters and felt very connected to them. I’ve always been a fan of mythological creatures, and this book definitely had a new twist on some of the lore. I fully enjoyed it!
The book starts off with a girl named, Sara, who is going on a cruise as a dare. Everyone tells her that she’s “boring”, so she takes the dare and heads out on the ocean. In the midst of her trip a storm rises and she gets tossed overboard. Thinking she’s going to drown Sara eventually blacks out. She wakes up on an island with a pile of food beside her. Sara soon discovers that she’s not the only one on the island.
I really loved the sweet love story that wraps you up in its little finger. I love how the simple life of the island melts the heart of this girl with the heart of a mythological man. It was a very clean book, and I liked that since it seems like most romances are full of garbage now. Darian had my heart as well.
This story begins with the main character, Sara Adams, falling off a boat and into the ocean. She loses consciousness, and when she wakes up, she finds herself on a deserted island with some food to eat. As the days pass, she continues to find food someone keeps leaving for her. Finally, she gets to meet the young man. But she has no idea how he got to her island or where he runs off to at night. In time, they fall in love, but before anything can come of it, the Coast Guard comes and takes her back home.
Over the year, she never forgets the handsome stranger who stole her heart, even when she stars dating someone else. But before she can fully commit to the new man in her life, she feels compelled to return to the Caribbean. If she can reconcile her past, she will finally be able to move on. Then she sees the mysterious stranger and has to decide between the two men in her life. And she's about to learn the secrets the stranger couldn't tell her when they were together on the deserted island.
This is a sweet and charming romance with a fairytale-like quality to it. What I liked most about this book was the secret of the handsome man's identity and why he had to keep running off at night or when it rained. His mother opposes any kind of relationship he might have with Sara, and it's the secret that is the reason for it. I loved the dynamics of the new man in Sara's life and enjoyed the suspense as I tried to figure out his true identity. Overall, I thought this was a fun and quick read, and I'm looking forward to books 2 and 3.
At The Water's Edge (Adronis Novella #1) by Melanie Nilles
At The Water's Edge was a great book as an introduction to Melanie Nilles. I can't say it's the best book, I won't do that until I've read a few more of her's. It's a great entertaining light read with some heart.
This book is touted as a Novella but it comes off more as a novel. The reason I say this is that though it has some of the hurry up and get there nature of a novella Melanie still delves enough into her characters to allow the reader to have feelings for them. I find in a lot of novella's that becomes difficult because of the short nature of a novella. Most time's the characters are the one that get short changed in the Science Fiction category.
But, this is not just a Science Fiction Fantasy this is a Romance and I would agree that it is first a romance and second Science Fiction. This is a romance between to seeming different species. It is also the story of people who have advanced genetic engineering. The science is never dealt with on a heavy level and is mostly ancillary to the characters and the romance.
I love Science Fiction and I enjoy Romance in my Science Fiction so this was no large stretch for me. And, though at the begining it seemed like the character of Sara Adams was going to get shorted by the novella I think the author slowly developed a better liking for Sara as she went along and began to give her some more depth. All kidding aside Sara was well developed as an almost spoiled but wounded young lady who really wouldn't be doing what she was doing if she'd not been so wounded.
It's that wounded and vulnerable Sara that gets herself into trouble in no worse place than the Bermuda Triangle. Thinking she's about to drown she seems to give up only to discover she's safe on an Island. She's also alone and isolated and not sure how to survive.
Thankfully Darian is around. He has saved her and placed her on the island and is bringing her food. Since he doesn't speak English and Sara hasn't learned much of any other languages, there's a huge language boundary at the beginning. But, that pales to Sara's constant uncertainty that any of this is real. Perhaps that's a contributing factor to why Sara never seems to catch onto what the reader can easily discern is going on with Darian. Even before we get the larger reveal.
Suffice it to say, if I had any quibbles it would be that as bright as Sara is and has to be to have turned Darian's head in the first place, she should have figured some of this out, even if she didn't believe it. But, love has a ways to go and there's always the potential conflict with the mother-in-law to be.
I enjoyed the hint of a notion of travelers from far places being wise enough to know they must tweak the DNA to survive in new world. And, all I can say to that is, Melanie you have a lot of writing ahead of you while you examine all the different types of creatures they may have left throughout the vast universe.
Great Romance for romance lovers, but how would I know that? Good character development, which is always a plus. The bonus of Science Fiction that doesn't necessarily drive the story. And lastly, a good Young Adult fiction.
A tragic book about eyes being opened to what is really going on around us. Often times we live in a bubble, sometimes at no fault of our own. How do we react as our eyes are opened to truth. This book addressed this subject, with some odd twists and turns, and with an odd happily ever after ending. It was a decent read, but a book that left little impact.
This was the stupidest book I have read in years! It was like it was written by a teenaged girl. I cannot tell you how highly I do not recommend it. What a waste of time!!
Though originally intrigued by cover, I was not expecting much after reading the back of the book. Based on the description, I was ready to read a short and typical island romance novel. Fortunately, this book surprised me and I was delighted by the sweet romance and unique twists that the story takes.
The book begins when Sara, a college student out for a tour boat ride during her spring vacation, is swept into the sea during a freak storm. On the cusp of death, she is mysteriously saved from drowning and finds herself on a small, deserted island. Luckily for her and her lack of survival skills, a strange man also appears to be stuck on the island with her and he provides her with fresh fruit and fish. Strangely enough, this man always disappears after sunset and never makes an appearance in the rain.
The story is focused around the blooming romance between Sara and Darian, the mysterious man that she meets. Their growing love is sweet and very romantic, not overly passionate but endearing. There are no love scenes or graphic descriptions, but I felt a real connection to their attraction and love for each other.
The real interesting part of the story though is discovering the secrets of Darian and where he comes from. Clearly he is not all that he seems to be but I wasn't expecting the amount of depth and back story that he gets. The parts of the story told from his point of view and the information we learn about where he comes from and what he is is very fantastical and unexpected. I really loved the author's take on myth, history, and the natural world. The world developed behind the love story is just as interesting as the romance and could be a great backdrop for longer and more in depth books.
The only issue with this book, though not really a downside, is it's length. As a novella, there is not a lot of time to for real character development or a deep plot. And I felt that the ending was just a tad bit rushed. This book is only 130 pages or so and can be read in a matter of hours. I would have loved a longer book, a proper novel, but, for what it is, this short story is sweet and refreshing.
Okay, okay. So this is another book I won through a giveaway & let me tell you, I was very, very, very excited to have received this book. Whenever anything has any hint of the ocean in it, I'm interested.

So basically this story starts off with our main character Sara. Now at fist I felt Sara was annoying, but I'm pretty sure we'd be just as annoying if we were stranded on an island all alone. Sara soon notices food being brought to her,but she has no idea where it's coming from. After a certain amount of time she meets an incredibly handsome guy named Damian, but he leaves whenever it rains or night comes. Sara eventually becomes so overcome with loneliness that when he leaves she has a meltdown, which is understandable. You quickly find out Damian is hiding something. As you go through you figure out what this is. Just as Sara is about to find out what's going on with Damian something happens that takes her away from him. Will Sara find out Damian's true nature, or will she move on with her life & forget all about Damian & the love she felt for him when she was on the island?
I loved this book. I wish it was longer though, it's one of those books that you can read through in one sitting. The story grabbed me from the first page. Each chapter flowed perfectly into the next. I didn't have any unanswered questions at the end & the story just made me happy. I would throughly recommend this book to anyone who grew up on the little mermaid or who has a love for the ocean & fantasy. There's a wonderful love story mixed in & it's not instalove it's well developed & there's a happy ending. So, if you're looking for a quick, easy, & enjoyable read you won't be disappointed with this book.
On her spring break, Sara chooses to go to the Bermuda Triangle for a week in the sun. Unfortunately, after going overboard she ends up on a deserted island, where she is brought food by a stranger who disappears each night. Despite the mysteries between them, the two fall in love, but she is rescued before anything can happen. Darian, the mysterious stranger, brings Sara food each day and watches over her after rescuing her from the sea. Language barriers and secrets keep them from learning more about each other. He is not certain if he can reveal who he is to Sara, despite having fallen in love with her. His mother also opposes the match and will do what she thinks she must to protect him and their people. After a year, Sara is compelled to go back to the Caribbean, to reconcile with her past and to be able to commit to the new man she has begun to date. She discovers that her stranger is actually real and the fantastical secrets he could not tell her before. Can she really believe him and choose him over the new man in her life? This is a sweet, charming and fairytale-like love story with a mystery and a new twist for old legends mixed in. I enjoy the author’s take on those old legends. The characters are likable. The story flows smoothly from start to finish. In addition, the fascinating new world Ms. Nilles creates has the potential for more interesting stories.

I received a copy of this book through the GoodReads FirstReads Giveaway.
This was interesting book to read. I was not sure if it was just fanasy, young adult or romance. Although, because they need to "consumate" their relatuionship, it may not be right for a younger audience.
The story started abruptly with the main character being swept off the ship and waking up on a deserted island. There was little character development leading up to this major event in the plot. The characters are fleshed out as the story goes along. In a short novel as this, there wasn't a lot of character development, but I did start to become interested in the character Sara and what she was going to do.
Who knew that a writer born and raised in land locked North Dakota would write a story in an ocean setting. I guess it is our prarie fascination with water.
This was a short novel. Less than 130 pages. I was able to read it in a day. I did enjoy the book.
This book was another disappointment for me. I loved Water For Elephants but Ape House was only interesting to me in that I love animals!! With At the Waters Edge I again felt that the writing just wasn't even in the same league as her first book.
Set during WWII, not much detail of what was happening in the war, felt like it was just background for the real story. I felt the story to be almost silly, the search for the Loch Ness monster while a war was going on???
The characters were interesting but not enough so that I really cared about them and wanted to find out what the outcome was.
I only made it through 3/4 of the book, just couldn't finish it. I gave it 3 stars because there was still some very good writing from this talented author.
Trio of Philadelphia semi-socialites take a trip from US to Scotland during World War II to find the Loch Ness monster! It seems Ellis has been disinherited for nasty behavior at a party and he believes he can redeem himself by following in his father's footsteps as "Nessy hunter"! He takes along his best friend, Hank, and his wife, Maddie. It isn't long before Maddie realizes where she fits in this relationship, helped along by the handsome, brooding Scottish innkeeper! There are a lot of interesting characters to meet in this book--mainly the Scots!

This book was really bad. I tried it because when it comes to fantasy I like underwater settings. But it was just bad. Horrible writing, seems like a kid wrote it and not a writer. Ridiculous, non existent story development. Flat and boring characters. Even if this book is for young adults it is bad. There are plenty of those that end up being really interesting, this is not the case here even though the idea itself was good. I hate not finishing reading a story but i really have no desire to know what happens next.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm always willing to try different things when it comes to reading. I'll read anything! I received it free through Goodreads First Reads and gave it a try. And it was great! Plain and simple. I'm ready to see what happens in the next book. This book had characters that I liked and a story that I liked. Melanie Nilles has a new fan. Thanks for the opportunity to read your book!
I thought At the Waters Edge did a good job painting a picture of society at the time of the second world war. They made the class distinctions and attitudes very apparent as well as the precarious situation of women at the time. I felt that it ended a little abruptly. I would have liked to have known more about what happens to the many well defined characters. I guess leaving wanting to know more is not always a bad thing....sequel?...
I recieved this book through Good Reads First Reads.
I very much enjoyed this book. I was at around page 40 when I picked it up earlier today and read it to the finish simply because I couldnt stop. I've already ordered the 2nd book for my kindle fire to start reading later today. This book has a unique story line and is exciting and interesting keeping the readers attention.
Welcoming a new, and almost inconceivable species underneath water is easily described as main vocal- point through this ebook. Not completely dull as being predicted, due to carrying decreased interest toward fantasy genre. Well enjoyed, four stars!
This is not an adult book. It seems to be better suited to a young adult. If it was a movie I'd give it a PG-13. I found it simple. Not much plot. No real character development. It was The Abyss, Splash, and The little Mermaid rolled into one book.
