It was unthinkable to Jeff Stanley not to be re-elected cheerleader in his senior year. Why, he was one of the best the school had ever had! Even his girl, Tracy, couldn't make him understand what had happened - that he had become so cock-sure and swell-headed that people resented him, no matter how good he was. Bitter, ostracised by the student body, finally given up by Tracy, Jeff slowly began to work out a new way of life for himself. One thing he could do alone was to practice pole vaulting, which he had always liked. A beginning friendship with a new boy at school helped, at well, and slowly Jeff's understanding of himself and his mistakes few and his hurt lessoned. By the time of spring track tryouts, constant practice and endless hard work enabled Jeff to win a place on the school team. To win back his fellow students' respect and liking was a much more difficult achievement, but it was something that Jeff wanted with all his heart.
