This is a prophacy by the minor prophet Joel.
The main theme throughout is that if Israel turns to The Lord, He will have mercy on them and give them favor.
I recommend this book to all.

Another book I don’t fully understand, but what I got from it this time (summer 2018) is that, if we turn to God and praise His name, we receive blessing rather than judgment when eternity comes. God is powerful, but He’s kind too, to those who choose Him. He loves us; yes, He loves you and me. This book shows His desire for us to turn to Him for our every need. Only He may fulfill them.

A short, poignant book, reminding us that after punishment comes restitution… Its message is very similar to Amos’s: in an era when all nations seem on the highway to perdition and Man is exalted above everything, there is so much encouragement and warning in seeing how God is Supreme Ruler and the Day of Reckoning is coming. And like Amos, Joel warns of judgment and reminds why the judgment is coming, but ends with Hope.

Joel is another prophet. The main focus of this book is on a plague of locusts. My overall conclusion is that I'm not too keen on locusts now.

In January 2015 I set myself the challenge to read the complete Bible within a year. I discovered that was an unrealistic challenge, and decided to pick up my Bible as and when I felt ready to read more of it. Here is a link to all the reviews in my Bible challenge so far:

An absolute disaster has just befallen Israel; locusts have ravaged the country: “what the cutter left, the locust swarm has eaten; what the locust swarm left, the grasshopper has eaten; and what the grasshopper left, the devourer has eaten.”

In the face of this tragedy however, the prophet advises the nation to let this strengthen their faith. “even now says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning, rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord...proclaim a fast, call an assembly gather the people”

Hardships can be mysterious and unexpected, but they're an opportunity to humble ourselves, grow a little bit less detached from worldly affairs, to remember our sins, and to also keep in mind that nothing, except by our own hand, can ever be taken from us that would allow us to grow closer to God.

In the long term there is a reward for patiently suffering and God promises his people here “to repay you for the years which the locust has eaten”

The book then quickly telescopes through the future. Here is the source of the famous Pentecostal imagery in which God “will pour out my [His] spirit upon all mankind.” A general judgment is promised in which the entire world will face punishment for persecuting the virtuous, and good will finally triumph. The virtuous are symbolized by Judah, and Heaven by Jerusalem: “Judah shall abide forever, and Jerusalem for all generations”

I have always been a Christian. I was brought up in a Christian home, I had Sunday school every Sunday and Wednesday night church every, well, Wednesday. I went to church camps, I was baptized, and I went to Christian school and even had those corny cartoon illustrations of Bible Stores on tape.

So why is it that I have never fully read the Bible?

You would think being the brought-up Christian I am that I would have. I mean I said I had before. I even told people I have read it thirty times! I was a liar. I have never read the whole thing, though I think I know 99.99% of the stories in the Bible.

So my challenge to myself, which started on October 18th, 2015, is to read the whole Bible within a year.

Cute, right?

No. It’s an actual commitment and I am ashamed to say it is a difficulty. It’s more than just reading the Bible; it’s about understanding and putting it to great work.

I am not a know it all Christian. I am not a stuck up Christian. I still think of myself as a baby Christian in all honest because there is so much I still don’t understand and still don’t know. I mess up, like a lot; the difference is: I own up to it. With that being said, I missed like three days and had to double up a lot because I get tired and lazy and stupid. Mostly stupid.

So here is my review of Joel.

Another short review but very sobering yet encouraging. I felt as if it was pointing straight at me at points.

Joel is another short (4 chapters) but powerful prophetic book. Set before either Israel or Judah had been carried away into captivity, the book begins with a vivid description of a locust plague and its effects on Israel and the land.

Joel seques this into a metaphor of a forthcoming invasion of Israel by armies. This was fulfilled first in 722 BC when Israel went into captivity in Assyria and then in 587 BC when Jerusalem was burnt and Judah taken to Babylon.

But Joel's not done yet. The prophecy continues into the end time when all the world suffers under curses, like the sun and moon not giving light. Then God intervenes and restores all.

This is one of those books where any substantial "review" or commentary is inevitably going to be as long as the book itself (well, not quite, but almost . . . ).

It's also one of those short prophetic books that doesn't seem to have a lot to distinguish it from the longer prophetic books or the other shorter ones that follow it.

That being said, there are a few verses and/or phrases that resonate from my early memories of attending church. One is 2:28 ("I will pour out my spirit on all flesh," etc.). I heard that one cited often in reference to the showier aspects of the Pentecostal movement (not that it plays the part that it once did in my own theology).

There's also an old song called "Blow the Trumpet in Zion" that borrows many of its lyrics from this book. Honestly . . . the song doesn't make a whole lot of sense, especially if you try to understand it through the context of the original verses, but hey . . . the Gaither Vocal Band sure sounded good singing it, didn't they?

P.S. I'm also rather fond of the wording in 3:14: "Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!" Very evocative.

The book of Joel was a powerful prophetic message and a call for repentance.

It taught me that even in times of judgment, God’s mercy is available to those who turn back to Him with sincere repentance.

He is a God who restores, redeems, and renews.

After half a year of HARD to read/decipher prophet books. Joel is to the point and encouraging. Despite the entire first chapter essentially calling for everyone to shake in their boots, the next two chapters bring the promise of God pouring his spirit out upon us!!

Joel is a short, but powerful prophetic book. Joel uses the structure of talking about recent disasters to stir people to repentance and then points to future disasters to also cause repentance. With the disasters, Joel also promises future deliverance, hope, and blessings.

One noteworthy blessing is God's Spirit to be poured upon 'all flesh' (Joel 2:28). The apostle Peter quotes this verse on the day of Pentecost as being fulfilled with the coming of the Holy Spirit upon Christians of all nations. Acts 2:17-19

Oddly, there is no specific sin that Joel cites for repentance. Rather, the point of the book is for people to seek God with all their hearts because of past and future disasters.

The powerful prophecies of this perfect book resonate today as they did when it was written. If you don't "get it" read some good commentaries [Wiersbe, McGee, etc] to help you understand.

JOEL CHAPTER 2:

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;

2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.

4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.

5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.

6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.

7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:

8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.

9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.

10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:

11 And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

12 Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:

16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.

17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?

18 Then will the Lord be jealous for his land, and pity his people.

19 Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:

20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.

21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do great things.

22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.

23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.

24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.

25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.

26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.

27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.

32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

BLESS THE NAME OF JESUS!

My Reading Through the Entire Old Testament Journey
The book of Joel
(3 chapters)

🦟Joel is talking about a time when locusts came and ate up all of their fields - literally all of their food was stripped bead by an invading “army” of locusts. The people were devastated and Joel begs for the people to turn their hearts towards God.

🎬 Joel summary illustrated video (BibleProject): https://youtu.be/zQLazbgz90c?si=bIYzW...

Two verses that stood out to me -

🩷“That is why the Lord says, “Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.”
‭‭Joel‬ ‭2‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭NLT‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/116/jol.2.12-...

🫗“Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on servants—men and women alike. And I will cause wonders in the heavens and on the earth— blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and terrible day of the Lord arrives.”

Just like another prophets, Joel warns Israelites to comeback to the God and become faithful, loyal and respectful to Yahweh who can be their saviour or their destroyer. Joel reminds them that it’s up to the Israelites to be saved or damned, all the thing they should do is repenting for their sins and comeback to the lord and help the poor people instead of living their luxurious and sinful lives. God warn them by the army of locusts and pests who are the army of other nations and ethnics and also the enemy of Israelites. All the things the Israelites should do is coming back to Yahweh and repent for their sins. My favourite verses are 2:28-29 which is another prophecy of the New Testament where God promises us that He would accept us as HIS children and pour his Holy Spirit on his children and also let HIS children do prophecies and become HIS prophets. That’s the best promise that God gave them and thank God for Jesus Christ and the living words of God, because not only he saved Israelites, he saves gentiles and chose all of us as HIS children. Thank God for That and Hallelujah… .

Joel is just 3 chapters but it centers on the phrase “Day of the Lord”. The first chapter focuses on the devastation of the land caused by locust and then in chapter 2 it flips to future eschatology when it refers to “Day of the Lord”. God is going to return and His return will be forceful. It uses locusts as imagery like a large army coming - 2:11 says …”For the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; who can endure it?”

It then shifts to a call to repentance with v. 13 saying “so rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; and he relents from doing harm.”
God is so patient with us and He’s willing to forgive and give grace but he wants true inward repentance and not an outward hollow showiness.

In the second half of chapter 2 it assumes repentance has come and the blessing that comes from God in 1) material blessing and 2) Spiritual blessing.

Chapter 3 is about God restoring the nation Israel and bringing vengeance on all of it’s enemies.

Joel 2:11-14 ESV

12 “Yet even now,” declares the LORD,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
13 and rend your hearts and not your garments.”
Return to the LORD your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
and he relents over disaster.
14 Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain offering and a drink offering
for the LORD your God?

The book of Joel’s importance to the canon of Scripture stems from its being the first to develop an oft-mentioned biblical idea: the day of the Lord. While Obadiah mentioned the terrifying event first (Obadiah 15), Joel’s book gives some of the most striking and specific details in all of Scripture about the day of the Lord—days cloaked in darkness, armies that conquer like consuming fire, and the moon turning to blood. Rooted in such vibrant and physical imagery, this time of ultimate judgment, still future for us today (2 Thessalonians 2:2; 2 Peter 3:10), makes clear the seriousness of God’s judgment on sin.

The book of Joel is the twenty-ninth book of the Bible, and it is found in the Old Testament. The author is possibly the prophet Joel himself, and it is a book of prophecy. This is the hardest book of the Old Testament to date, as there is no mention of any of the kings at the time of prophecy nor any other explicit points that would assist the dating of the book.

Joel is full of natural imagery, employing use of the sun and moon and other natural phenomena to make his points. His book in particular focuses on the seriousness of the day of the Lord and of the terrible consequences of sin on that day. As in other books of prophecy, the theme of repentance is tied to judgement and restoration.

The book of Joel is a short read, but it is remarkably intense. The plague of locusts used to relate to the people and their current problems speaks of a God who notices and cares about what is going on in the lives of His people. The apocalyptic nature of this book should encourage a firm hold on God and should help to spur one on to holiness.

Joel 2:12-13 KJV
Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

The BOOK OF JOEL confused me a lot. It only consisted of three chapters that started with heat wave, plague and famine but ended with blessing for God's people. Probably, it was either the timeline of these events happened somewhere between 2 KINGS and 2 CHRONICLES, or this Book was simply incomplete.
