The book of Obadiah is a prophacy against the land of Edam whose ruler is Esau, the brother of Jacob.
Edam is to fall for its' pride and its' violents against Jacob and the land of Juda. Every prideful sin will be inacted upon the people of Edam for their prideful sins and Juda shall be made Holy unto The Lord.
I recommend this book to all.

A quick book explaining God’s judgment on the Edomites and the heathens… and a glorious ending.

“But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.”

This brief book put me in mind of consequences. For evil deeds, there are negative consequences; while for good deeds, there are positive consequences. Obadiah emphasizes the importance of being intentional about choosing right over wrong. It also reminds me of the fact that our works prove our faith. I like books like this one that get me thinking about how I live my life.

The book of Obadiah is a rebuke to Edom [descendants of Esau, Isaac's older half-brother] for rejoicing over Israel's woes. We must be careful not only in our actions but in our attitudes.

Obadiah, I didn't realize, is only one chapter long. An interesting chapter though! The notes in my Bible say it's talking about judgement against Edom for the violence with which they treated Israel. And also that the ultimate victory belong to God and His followers!

"You should not look down on your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble." Obadiah 1:12

"On the day you stood aloof..."

"The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, 'Who can bring me down to the ground?' Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down," declares the Lord."

“For the day of the Lord is near upon all heathen”—Obadiah 15. This wasn’t going to be a good thing in 550 B.C.E., when Egypt was supposed to destroy it (v. 19). It never happened. Edom lived on and its people were later assimilated into the Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic Empires.

Obadiah is a single chapter prophecy book of the Bible. Obadiah focuses on the sinfulness of Edom and the demise coming for it as God’s judgement. A quick read, but could be hard to understand without some content!

The shortest book in the OT, Obadiah details a prophetic vision from God about the imminent judgement on Edom. From verse 15 you see that Edom also represents all the nations who oppose Israel in the end times.

Obadiah is a lesser-known book, and I admit that I don't even remember the last time I read it. But it's a reminder that we need to trust and have faith in God's moral government and hope in the eventual triumph of His just will, and we can have the assurance that God is on His throne and He cares for His own.

This is one of the shortest ‘books’ of the Bible; it could fit on one page. On the surface it's a condemnation of Edom, but what do you find when you contemplate it a bit more?

Well there is the theme of humility. Edom appears to be a small nation, but nonetheless a successful one, paralleling the initial situation of the Jewish people themselves, but “from there I will bring you down, says the Lord...Shall I not, says the Lord, on that day make the wise men disappear from Edom.” And history is certainly scattered with examples of intelligentsia failing to prevent the destruction of their nations, perhaps even contributing to it.

After the Babylonians destroyed Judah, Edom pounced in like a vulture to take what it could. It would hardly be the first or the last nation to do such a thing, but God warns to “Enter not the gate of my people on the day of their calamity...lay not hands upon his possession on the day of his calamity. Stand not at the crossroads to slay his refugees; betray not his fugitives on the day of distress” It's a straight condemnation of what Edom did, but also a general warning to never take advantage of those in distress.

The book ends, not untypically, by becoming apocalyptic and messianic. “Near is the day of the Lord for all the nations,” a reminder that God rules the entire world, and that a general judgment is inevitable.

There is also a promise of the restoration of Israel, in which can also be viewed a promise that in the end the virtuous will triumph over the evil: “the house of Jacob shall take possession of those that dispossessed them”

Book 31 out of 39 books! I’m getting so close to finishing the whole Old Testament! 🙌🏽

Shortest book in the OT : 1 chapter, 21 verses 😮

Obadiah was a prophet and his book was a series of judgement poems against the nation of Edom.
My first thought— “No, not another message of JUDGEMENT!” But I did learn some interesting things.

⛰️Edom was a nation very close to Israel and they were actually blood relatives, descendants of Abraham.
⛰️They lived up high in the mountains, which is used as a metaphor because they viewed themselves as better than everyone. They had a huge PRIDE issue, which God hated.
⛰️Not only that but when Israel was conquered by Babylon, Edom did nothing to help and even plundered some of Israel’s cities & killed their refugees. God REALLY hated that.
⛰️The neat thing I learned from the devotional video (link below) is that the word EDOM is the same word in Hebrew for HUMANITY or ADAM ( אדם ) and therefore this message is for all of us, all of humanity.
⛰️At the end God promises to heal and restore and be King to as his people. (vs 19-21)
⛰️This isn’t in the Bible but I was reading about Obadiah and apparently he himself was an Edomite, which might be why God chose him to bring this message to Edom.

As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head. [Obadiah 15]
So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
These verses aren't saying exactly the same thing, but my mind immediately made the connection. The first verse is a warning: One day you'll be on the receiving end of the bad treatment you dealt to others. The second verse is a more positive statement: Treat others the way you'd like to be treated. The basic message is the same, isn't it?

i read this because it’s the shortest book in the bible tbh. there are a few references and words i don’t fully understand so i will definitely search those up, watch video essays on this book, and then go back and re-read to fully understand. once i fully know what’s going on my review might change but as of right now i thought it was alright.

1 chapter long, must be the shortest book so far. It doesnt really bring anything new.

0:03-04 - again about israel being sinners
0:05-13 - punishments, not getting happy about someones downfall, nor getting wealth of the ones that fell.
0:19-21 - promised lands

Sidenote: The reason for such vague and short and "eh" words on each of these books, is because I wasn't challenging the study of the Bible when I read these. I was challenging myself to read the whole Bible in a year because I knew it would be discipline to keep at it daily. I do, however, plan to pick up a book and study what it is saying. Those will be longer reads and more notes.

So here is my review from my "Read the Bible in a Year" challenge. Usually just snippets of thoughts and random things I liked about the book itself. Nothing in-depth.

So here is my review of Obidiah.

WOAH BUDDY. I CANNOT EVEN.

This books was heavy for me. It was short and heavy. It talks about living for yourself and how that is not the way to live. PRIDE. This is a life altering book. I needed this awakening.

The verse that stuck out to me the most was...
“For the day of the LORD upon all the nations is near; As you have done, it shall be done to you; Your reprisal shall return upon your own head.”
I needed to read that!!

This book mainly speaks of God's Judgment against Edom, the descendants of Esau, brother of Jacob, son of Isaac and Rebecca, son of Abraham and Sarah. We are introduced to the pride of the people that caused God's Judgment against them. First, we learn about their sin. They did not respond on the day of the affliction of Judah, one of the cities of the people of God. They after started to boast of their fortifications and laugh at Judah's misery. Then, they started taking lots of the people and joined forces with their enemies to attack the fleeing people from the destroyed city. For all these sins against their brother, God is punishing them, promising to completely wipe them off, which happened around 70AD with the Romans. This passage teach us to not be prideful just like the people of Edom were about their natural fortresses in their cities that were carved in the rock (like Pietra, Jordan - with the name literally meaning rock), their wisdom, as the Bible often mentions the wisdom of the men of the East refering to Edom, and their alliances with greater powers around them for, even they were a small nation, had powerful alliances that could protect them. God mentioned that these would be no value, and will be completely destroyed with the same things that they had done to God's people.

In this sense, God is encouraging us to deal with our pride, one of the greatest sins that He despised, which can also be seen with Lucifer turned Satan. He is also reminding us that the same sin committed to different people can have a greater weight, especially if done against our brothers and sisters in Christ. We ought to be not complacent in their suffering, but help them as much as we can. We also cannot join in attacking them for no reason or with reason because God's Justice is greater than all.

In the end, God reminds us that deliverance shall come from the mountain of Zion for the people of Israel that were afflicted by the actions of the Edomites and that He will bring Justice for them 🤍!

Obadiah, one of the 12 Minor Prophets, announces judgment on the nation of Edom for its sins against Judah. and Jerusalem. Specifically, the prophet denounces Edom for gloating over the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 587 B.C.E., and accuses Edom of looting Jerusalem and handing over her fugitives. Let us not forget the lineage of Edomites. The Edomites are descended from Lot, the nephew of Abraham, and his daughter. After Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, Lot's daughter got him drunk and had a sexual experience with her father. This nation was born out of incensed. Why do we wonder about the unrest in the Middle East? These hostilities have been occurring for thousand of years beginning at the time of Abraham. Read this book not only to understand the current events in the Middle East but to comprehend how the Lord deals with the enemies of His chosen ones.
