Rapid Transient

Rate this book
Check-in was easy for Wily Spiver. Easy on the eyes that is, as Lucy Branch stood behind the registration desk of the Lucky U Motel. It was more than a mutual attraction. It was a destiny that neither one could ever have anticipated.

So begins Wily's adventure in seemingly bucolic Great Valley, a western Colorado town that is anything but idyllic. Environmentalist Derrick Banyan is pitted against Victor Saville, a Las Vegas mobster who wants to dam up all the water left in a drought-stricken wildlife area as part of a proposed large-scale diversion project for a Vegas consortium downstream.

County commissioners and business leaders alike also want part of the action, with visions of casinos and a lakefront resort on the outskirts of their town.

Corruption runs rampant, and Wily is there to report on all of it for the Great Valley Beacon. But when the conflict turns deadly, he is pressured to end any more coverage on the death of the environmentalist or risk becoming another fatality in this water war.

When the chips are down, Wily heads to Nevada, back to his roots and to being the degeneerate gambler he once was.

But there is more at stake than just money at a craps game. Win, lose or draw, all bets are on the mark in Wily's game of chance.

Steve Anderson has done a great job of creating a protagonist you can't help but root for. Wily Spiver is a roving reporter with a roving eye. Part of what makes him such an endearing character are his very human flaws: he has a taste for gambling, booze, and women. Wily has traversed the southwest, going from one job to another, and barely manages to stay ahead of his creditors, but he never loses his reporter's eye nor the drive to dig out the truth in every story.

When Wily ends up with a reporter's job in Great Valley, he is immediately immersed in the small town's controversies. Big ideas for development and water usage clash with an environmentalists conservation plans. But things come to a head when someone is murdered and Wily Spiver sets out to get the real story.

Rapid Transient is a novel you won't want to miss. Anderson has succeeded in writing a story that is full of humor and many twists and turns, but manages to deliver an important message to its readers. Don't miss it!
