Trapped for years around adults who thought they knew everything, Andria Buchanan started writing to keep herself sane and out of jail. Now, instead of fighting traffic and dealing with staff meetings Andria prefers to spend her days hanging out by the pool in a pair of yoga pants and a t-shirt, typing away at stories about young women who are completely capable of kicking butt, saving themselves, and rescuing a cute prince in need of kissing all without chipping their nail polish and still getting their math homework done.

When she's not working she's either on Twitter @AndriaBuchanan or chasing down one of her two dogs (aka The Not So Wonder Twins) who believe it's their life's mission to eat all her left socks.

I had to stop reading this on my Kindle, because I got a corrupted copy or something. All of the "fl" and "fi" combinations were deleted, so phrases like "She flew through the fire" came out as "She ew through the re." I suppose I could have continued reading, but it wasn't worth THAT much to me.

This is the second book in the series. Allie and her friends are recovering from the battle at the end of the first book and are learning more about their powers and positions. Allie knows that in order to return home, she must find the remaining 2 artifacts, but she is torn between her old word and the kingdom she is now responsible for. When her nemesis returns, with a new ally at his side, Allie and her allies must again fight to save their lives and rally together to keep hope alive. The responsibility of her position weighs heavily on her, but she must keep going to make the sacrifices of those around her have meaning. It will be interesting to see how the series will pan out in the third and final book.

Oh my. It gets worse.

This book is a trainwreck and a huge DNF (did not finish). I was almost asleep at times and the author showed the most mundane details! I actually missed Jesse and Heidi because at least they brought some comedy to the whole thing. It was just so...dull. Winston and Allie's relationship came out of nowhere and they're pretty cheesy, but I like that so... but, ugh. Can these YA books just stop?

I received an ARC through NetGalley.

Picking up just three months after the end of Everlast, Evanescent begins with Allie adjusting to her role as queen of Nerissette now that the Fate Maker is out of the picture. However, he's not gone for good, and soon enough the temporary peace is over. It's back to war for Allie and her subjects, and this time it's even more brutal. Allie is also searching for one of the lost relics that she must destroy before the Fate Maker can get his hands on it and use it for evil. She only has three days to find it, and with a war raging around her palace the pressure is on. The fate of Nerissette and "the real world" are in her teenage hands.

Even though the first book wrapped up nicely and could have stood alone, I liked how the events (big and small) weren't forgotten in Evanescent. Life does go on, but Allie hasn't forgotten Heidi and Jesse. There are comments about them scattered throughout, so it's not like they were there and now they're not. Also, Mercedes' desperation to return home is still there. While she seems to be settling into her new life as a dryad, she still thinks it's all temporary. I really liked seeing how this effected her relationship with Allie. It's clear that Allie is alienating her friend somewhat, since all she talks about is how to save the kingdom, and how to use the relics to save Nerissette instead of taking them back to their home. Winston on the otherhand, is the voice of reason. He's accepted that they may be stuck there forever, but he also makes it clear what he wouldn't leave Allie behind. Their growing relationship is super adorable! I just wish that he had some kind of flaw. Things are too perfect between them.

The plot of Evanescent is pretty much the same as Everlast, but with the Dragon's Tear relic thrown in. It's still good versus evil, Allie versus the Fate Maker. But it's all a bit less fluffy. There's more battles, and lots more death. The stress of the situation is really getting to Allie, but she's doing the best that she can. There are a few twists along the way, but one was fairly predictable. The book was still a fun read though, especially since we get more world building! Allie is interacting with more of her subjects, so as a result there's more information about the different species, particularly the mermaids and the dryads. The hunt for the Dragon's Tear also introduced us to more of the world's myths and legends, which were clearly well thought out.

In the end, Evanescent was a great sequel! Sure it may have been a little predictable, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I absolutely love this fairy tale world come to life and I've come to adore the characters within it, too. Once again, evil has been defeated for the moment, but Allie hasn't won her kingdom over just yet. Aside from the Fate Maker, she still has to deal with her evil aunt who wants to rule in her place and has an army waiting. I can't wait to see how Allie manages to overcome all this in the final book!

Trapped in the deadly land of Nerissette, Allie has all but given up on any return to the mortal realm. Unless she can find the two elusive artifacts that have the power to get her and her friends back home.

But she’s got even bigger problems as the newly crowned queen of Nerissette: she must unite her people in the midst of a civil war and capture the Fate Maker—the evil puppet master responsible for the conflict—before he can find another army willing to return him to power. On top of it all, Allie is just a normal teenager. Her feelings are growing for the guy she’s certain is her true love, and balancing her personal life while being the queen isn’t as easy as it sounds. Allie must learn the true meaning of bravery, love, and kinship, regardless of the world—and danger—around her.

Evanescent picks up 3 months after Everlast - with Allie as the Queen of Nerisette and trying to rule her kingdom - not an easy task with different species of magical beings who have had centuries of mistrust against each other. While rebuilding the castle and trying to secure peace to her lands, a new threat arises in the form of her aunt, the Queen of the Nightmare lands. Also, the Fate Maker might find a way to come back and get the relics from her and she is forced to continuously choose between returning to her world and what is best for her kingdom.

Allie is a devoted Queen to her kingdom - anything she can do, she will do - even at the cost of her own or her friends' happiness. It i admirable that even though she is tempted again and again to just give up and find a way back instead, she goes ahead and thinks of The World of Dreams first. It is particularly sad how the nobles and leaders of the various clans underestimate her, thinking her to be a naive teenager (she is a bit dense at times, though) unfit for ruling. It actually makes me wonder that how in a world filled with magical beings, humans were ever able to hold any power - as they pretty much useless in the front lines.

The plot develops at a good pace - keeping you hooked and eager for the next page. Some reveals I saw coming a mile away but, the writing was good and kept it from being too predictable. The war parts had me confused at times - they were too short (in reality a war wouldn't end in just one battle, you know) and people just keep on retreating too quick. Loyalties are shifting left and right and man, did I want to whack that Eamon on his head for his poor thinking! The romance doesn't develop much so if you are a fan of swoony romance storylines (I'm not), this one is not for you. There is a lot of foreshadowing in the book, which actually makes me quite interested for the next one.

This book starts a few months after the big battle, which ends Book 1. Allie has rid Nerissette of the evil Fate Maker - or so she thought. He's back again, and this time, with reinforcements.

Like before, this is a fairly fast paced story. Although it's never clearly explained how the Fate Maker escaped his doom, it doesn't take long for us to know he's back and has joined forces with Allie's jealous aunt (although we never really get the chance to meet her in this book). There are more fight scenes than in the early book, more deaths and a much more self-assured Allie. Her decisions are, in general, well made and level-headed. She's learned to accept her position as queen, and seems to have embraced the fact that she'll never return to reality as we know it. Although this definitely displays character development, I would have liked to have Allie show a little more desire to want to go back, especially since her mother is still stuck in the other reality.

Many of the more important characters from book 1 lose importance, allowing ones from Nerissette to scoot into focus. Allie might be fighting the same basic battle as before (against the Fate Maker and his thirst for power), but the setting and surrounding problems are different enough to keep this from feeling like a regurgitation.

The tension holds through the entire book. There were only a few spots where I felt the dialogue exchange was a little unnecessarily drawn out. A couple plot points weren't completely flushed out, but it wasn't enough to be really irritating. The lack of romance between Allie and Winston surprised me. The blurb hints at her growing feelings and thoughts of true love, but there really isn't too much loving going on. The action and main plot are definitely the winners here.

I enjoyed reading this and found it a good continuation to the series. There are some very well-placed cliff-hangers at the end, making it almost impossible not to want to see where Allie goes from here. In other words, I can't wait to read Book 3 - INFINITY.

Evanescent (The Chronicles of Nerissette) by Andria Buchanan is book two in her YA fantasy series that follows Allie Munroe, now Queen of Nerissette, and her tumultuous journey of ruling her kingdom, stopping the evil forces of the Fate Maker and her aunt Bavasama, and whether or not it is still possible to send her friends back home.

Picking up three months after Everlast, Evanescent is filled with action and continues the wonderful world-building, as well as, character development that Ms. Buchanan started in her first book. I enjoyed the interactions Allie had with the people of Nerissette and how strong she continues to prove herself to be. The relationship she has with Winston continues to be steady as he remains by her side though there is some drama with her friend Mercedes, whose desire to return home conflicts with Allie's goals of solely protecting Nerissette.

Evanescent was a great story with its twist and turns. I very much recommend.

Fantasy, adventure and romance abound as Allie, now Queen of Nerisesette, and her boyfriend Winston, a dragon and her best friend Mercedes, a dryad along with her loyal subjects, fight to keep their world safe from the Fate Maker, who, having disappeared, is not really gone. All the while, Mercedes, Winston and Allie really want to find a way to get back home although Allie is torn between her love for her friends and family and her loyalty to her kingdom. Allie learns that being Queen can be rather boring and frustrating at times as well as being a quite dangerous job. The book is fast paced and action packed and I look forward to reading the next one!

Pretty disappointing all around.
Advertised as a Young Adult book, but written on more of a tween level.
A loose plot where much similarity with The Chronicles of Narnia can be seen.
Just not something I would continue reading.
