Joanne Brothwell

Joanne Brothwell lives in the country on the Canadian prairie where her stories are inspired by the dead things that appear at her doorstep on a daily basis.Of course, her two pets, a retired police dog with titanium fangs and a feral barn cat missing two toes, make the safety of surrounding wildlife, at best, uncertain.

Nicknames are something Joanne has in abundance; most notably “Grumpy Bunny” (her husband), and “Princess with a Sailor’s Mouth” (her friends). She’s known to daydream, and ever since grade school has been accused of having a poor attention span. The truth is, Joanne has an alternate reality inside her head, where characters speak to her, sometimes so loudly (and incessantly) she just can’t hear anything else!

Joanne is thrilled to see her alternate universe finally become real with the publication of her novel, Stealing Breath, and her prequel novella, Vicarious. Now, with the sequel Silencing Breath on the way, you can be rest assured you will see much more of Joanne’s writing in the future, as those characters in her head, having tasted the sweet freedom of release, simply refuse to be silenced!

If I could give it negative 5 stars, I would. What a horribly awful smut-like disgusting book that's 'based' on a childhood story!

Absolutely filthy.

FOREST OF THE FORSAKEN by Joanne Brothwell

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release February 7, 2013

Forbidden love. Family betrayal. The ultimate sacrifice.

Following her mother’s death to cancer, Meg’s world crashes in around her; her father’s re-marries within weeks of their loss, her step-mother is cold and rejecting, and her new step-brother, Joey, has some rather uncommon sexual preferences. Meg’s only hope is to move away and leave her father and the dark memories behind.

When her father forces her to attend his honeymoon with this new and unwanted blended family, Meg finds herself in the remote wilderness of the Rocky Mountains, miles from civilization. Meg begins to see things in the forbidding forest—strange, unexplainable things she believes are the result of compounding stress. But when her father and step-mother disappear, leaving Meg and Joey to fend for themselves, lost and without supplies, she realizes her terrifying visions are not merely her imagination after all.

Will Meg and Joey find their way back to civilization? Or will they submit to the darkness within the Forest of the Forsaken?

In this eerie, erotic adaptation of Hansel and Gretel, the fairy tale ending may be far from happy.

REVIEW: FOREST OF THE FORSAKEN is a dark retelling of the Grimm Brother’s (Jacob and Wilhelm) fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. German in origin, the Hansel and Gretel storyline follows two young siblings who stumble upon a cannibalistic witch living in a house made of candy, deep in the darkened forest. Forest of the Forsaken twists the original storyline such that the evil witch no longer lives in a house made of candy, but the furnishings and embellishments remind Joey and Meg of the original storyline. And true to form, the witch has big plans for Joey and Meg-and the dinner menu includes one or both.

Twenty-something Joey and Meg first met the day their parents were married. Forced to go on a family camping trip, Meg and Joey will wake up the next morning alone and abandoned. But Joey had previously suspected his mother was up to something. With forethought, he had marked their path for return. The forest is no longer beauty in its’ nature, but alive with evil and dangers as they attempt to escape from the darkness closing in. Disillusioned by betrayal and thoughts of revenge, Joey and Meg push forward only to find themselves fighting for their lives.

Meg’s initial impression of Joey is tainted, but she will soon discover that Joey hides a painful past rife with abuse and neglect. We watch as Joey’s cold exterior and even colder heart begin to melt at the hands of a young and naïve Meg, whose life had been anything but cruel. With Meg’s acceptance, Joey will learn what it is to be loved but can her love save him from the ‘wicked witch’?

FOREST OF THE FORSAKEN is a well-written, contemporary and fascinating albeit darker re-telling of Hansel and Gretel. The friendship between Joey and Meg begins out of necessity as one would probably not survive without the other, and in doing so, it brings the would-be step siblings closer. Joanne Brothwell brings together Native American folklore and medicine and, blends it together with a Germanic stylized system of healing. Quite a combination! If you are a fan of the dark paranormal fantasy with a fairy tale twist, this book was written for you.

As it states in the synopsis this IS an "eerie adaptation of Hansel and Gretel." Forest of the Forsaken opens with Meg's attendance of her father's wedding just weeks following the death of her mother with all of the emotions and heartache that leaves your jaw dropping in wonder, how could something like this be happening? and I had to know what was going to occur next. The synopsis gives a good overview of the storyline and I cannot nor will I make an attempt to improve on this. Meg's emotional and heartbreaking decision making over this life event was very well done. The world building was vivid with wonderful supernatural creepiness. However, overall the characters' behaviors as the story progresses were in my opinion a little less believable. I think this stems from Meg's and Joey's sexcapades. While I enjoy some good smexy in a story, in the context of the story it made me uncomfortable and the situation less believable for me. This could be in part due to certain buzz words and behaviors prejudicing my personal perspective, but I just could not believe that in the midst of all the horrific occurrences and injuries the characters would be jumping each other's bones. That being said I enjoyed the dark twisty and unique interpretation of the tale that this author made her own vision. I loved hating the nasties, I enjoyed the conclusion, AND I am keeping mum on whether or not we have happily ever after or not. I have read other works by this author and really enjoy her writing style and will be looking forward her next work ready to dive in again. I requested this book from the author and received it with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.

Fascinating, enchantment, terror, lust.... Forest of the Forsaken has it all.....

Well, Hanzel and Gretel with a twist... Brilliant!
From the beginning of the Forest of the Forsaken: The Witches Snare, you are gripped; and filled with sympathy for the Main Character's Meg's plight. In her sad loss of her ever adoring Mother, who was replaced, rather quickly by the evil, skeletal Step Mother, from Hell.
We think that this is a devoted child, being incredulous towards the fact, her father has found a replacement for her beautiful mother. More so apparent, Megs sheltered and idealistic upbringing by her parents, is shocked into yet another dimension of being, when the son of the Evil Step mother is introduced, 'Joey' the 'Bad boy gone worse' characters, has some traits, lets say to Meg, are shocking to say the least.
The unconventional Sexual predilection of Joey, embarrass and entice her in a way sweet Meg has never succumbed before.
Yet observing, such behaviour, still is drawn to Joey. Her physical emotions alight like never before, heightened throughout, due to his presence.
Megs natural consciousness, experiences physical responses unbeknown prior, throughout the book, you are filled with her sense of change, and the way that the story is written you are intrigued as to which way young Meg will turn.
Once abandoned, and faced with the carnage, mystery, and fearful setting of the Forest of the Forsaken, Meg and Joey's journey takes a darkening turn.
I will not give away any spoilers, but this book is a must for all who yearn for something 'a little bit different'. The author's imagination, and intoxicating storyline will have you wanting more throughout.
Well done Joanne!!

I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.

WOW! That’s all that I can say about this story! It’s really awesome and the author (Joanne Brothwell) is just brilliant, she presented this story in a modernized way with a touch of sexy and erotic romance that would be appreciated by the adults as well as the young-adults.

The emotional turmoil between the main characters will connect you to the story and will leave you anticipating for more and more but sadly the story ends a little earlier than the readers wanted it to be or maybe we felt this because we never wanted it to end.

It’s fast pacing and the magic and paranormal component in it will excite you all and will make you race through the pages for knowing the end! The description of the darkness of the forest will spook you and you’ll feel that you’re in the place of Meg.

The story starts with Joey filled with darkness and Meg being totally devastated after the death of her mother and the remarriage of her father with an evil and cold woman but gradually through fear and desperation and attraction the romance between Meg and Joey pulses with great intensity overpowering the evil magic of the dark forest.

I think this much info is more than enough to catch your attention and go now and grab your own copy as soon as you can because if you don’t then you’ll really regret it that you missed such a promising story line and I bet that you guys will just enjoy it as much as I have.

I would like to thank Joanne Brothwell, the author of 'Forest of the Forsaken : The Witch's Snare' for letting me enjoy her wonderful story and for giving me the opportunity to review it.

A fast read that zips along at breakneck speed and sizzles with heat between the two main characters, this adult paranormal romance has few slow moments. Told in first person from the main character Meg’s point of view, the romance keeps shifting from dark to sweet, from lust to love, from sizzling to tender over the course of the story.

This is a reinterpretation of an old Grimm Brothers fairy tale, an adult retelling of the story of Hansel and Gretel. Let me emphasize the “adult” part of that sentence, as I mistakenly thought this was YA and (oh boy!) it’s not at all. I bought this before the cover redesign – and I have to add that I love the new cover art. With the more adult looking characters and the darker, creepier overtones, it’s beautiful and scary, and does justice to the story.

My favorite parts of the writing were the descriptions of both the evil forest (its own character, really) and the witch’s house. And the sex scenes. Ms. Brothwell does a great job bringing heat and darkness to the characters interactions and feelings. While I would’ve liked to have Joey’s character arc better defined (I desperately want him to be a totally changed man in the end!) I enjoyed this story immensely. It was a great escape – a guilty pleasure that I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, hot read for a day at the beach.

Anyone who knows me knows a couple of things one, I love me my fairytales, and two I like a hot cover and this cover is smokin'. Joey he's I love him, "you look like you would, with your fair hair and complexion." He gave me a once-over, and I could have sworn there was something appreciative in those vivid eyes." I know Joey is trouble but that doesn't mean he needs to be an a** but luckily Meg knows how to handle that, "I'm going. You can come or you can eff right off. Your choice." As I said the boy is troubled, "aren't you going to ask me about my neck? Aren't you oh-so-curious to find out if I slit my own throat?" Joey does have balls to admit to his messed-upness, "you need to understand something. I'm not normal. I'm messed up. I use people. I use them because they want me to. I use them because I can." Even though he has issues he's still thoughtful, "I'll carry it for you. You don't need the added physical stress of carrying anything." I mean he's really always thoughtful, "but it was over too fast. If you think that's how I roll, always cumming first leaving you high and dry...you'll never want to get naked with me again." I liked this book a lot and I hope the author does another re-make of a different fairytale.

What. The. F?! ok...
I'm shocked by all the good reviews.
This is a loose adaptation of Hansel & Gretel.. it's basically a smutty novella.
Megs mother passes away and very shortly after her death, get father falls in love with a woman who creeps her out. The day after the wedding they go hiking, meg and new brides son, Joey, are left in the woods by their parents purposely. The kids are in their 20's, and start following a trail that Joey conveniently felt they may need back.. of course trouble bestows them and they come across an older woman who offers help.. she held them, feeds them, and helps them trek homeward until she finds out they're not married.. at this point she tries killing and eating them, but meg saves the day and pushed her into an oven.. they make it home and find that dads new wife turned to ash the same time the witch in the woods was cooked alive...
The end. Everyone lived happily ever after.

Forest of the Forsaken
Joanne Brothwell

Started and could not stop. Literally only took about 5 hours to read the entire story.

Fan-freaking-tastic twist on the classic Hansel and Gretel turning the story into an adult para-romance. ALL of the characters were great, from Meg (the purity) and Joey (the darkness) all the way to the bear and wolf.
I truly enjoyed the entire book from start to finish. I definitely see myself reading this book again without any hesitation. The German/Native American aspect in the story was written very well. I enjoyed the bits of background and the magic behind both.

My only complaint is that the story ended too quickly. I will for sure be looking for the next book written by Ms. Brothwell :o)

ENJOY FOR YOURSELF

This has to be the strangest story I've read in a while. It's a modern remake of Hansel and Gretel, and creeped me out as I read. The thing is I couldn't stop reading!! I had to figure out what was going to happen with Joey and Meg.

I've never felt such intense anxious energy as I've read a book. This had a great pace, drew you in, and had me a nervous wreck. While the intensity of their love, and the lack of resolution to Joey's deep emotional issues wasn't dealt with quite to my satisfaction, I still felt the story was strong and gripping. I was only halfway through and recommending that my friend read it. There were excellent components to this story and I really enjoyed reading it.

This lady can write one creepy, weird story.

Amazing adventure

Joanne Brothwell is an amazing author with a great imagination. This story starts off with Maggie and her father. Maggie just lost her mother and her dad was getting married days after her mother's funeral. Unknowest at the time, he was marrying a witch (who had a son that Maggie found extremely handsome). They set off to the forest and you will not believe the adventure, fairy tale, love story, action, and horror that this book will carry you through. If this was a movie you would be gripping the seats. You will want to keep reading to find out what will happen next. Great read!

I was somewhat surprised by the childish nature of the book...and even more so when it was made clear that the book is yet another version of Hansel and Gretel...

This is just one of those books I really couldn't get into. Maybe it was because we all know how the story of Hansel and Gretel ends? Anyway it goes, I would recommend the book for most people. I kind of have a dark side and I would say the book did a better job of feeding my dark side than it did my imagination. If you have no idea what I just said, you don't have a dark side like mine :)

I couldn't put this book down!!! I absolutely LOVE how the author took the classic Hansel and Grettle and turned it in to an adult romance paranormal novel. I really loved the characters in the book and the relationships between them. Meg and Joey of course was my favorite but I could really find the depth with the all the characters. The book kept me guessing til the end there is twist and turns that you wont expect. I goes from loving and sweet to dark and creepy but that is what made me love it so much. So all in all I got to say this book is well worth the price and time to read!!!

Well, this was a very interesting re-telling of Hansel and Gretel. The story is brought into today's world with an abuse survivor as Hansel (Joey) and a rather sheltered Gretel (Meg). While I enjoyed the different take, I'm not quite sure why she made Joey such a troubled young man. Oh, BTW, they become lovers as they are not truly brother and sister. All in all a new twist which I liked of a classic fairy tale story. A translator would have been helpful in parts as a smattering of German can be found in the section of the witch.

Can a retelling of a classic fairy tale be original? Yeah, it really can be! Take Hansel and Gretel and mash it up with parental betrayal, love, a little sex, magic, and folklore and you have a whole new story you won't read anywhere else. In a world where I feel I have read it all before, this book stands out! Forest of the Forsaken is perfect for those who like paranormal with a twist and don't mind a bit of sex. If a little sex is not your thing, do yourself a favor and check out her other work. You won't be disappointed!

Okay Ya'll if you have not read it, I totally recommend Forest of the Forsaken by Joanne Brothwell!! This tale pulls you in with a captivating twist that does not disappoint. Brothwell pens a fresh perspective on the fairy tale by masterfully blending sensuality, romance and fear with amazing world building that comes to life. In the end I wanted more, simply because I was so invested in the characters and did not want the book to end. You won't be disappointed.

I truly enjoyed this fast paced book. I couldn’t put it down! It is a great modern twist on Hansel and Gretel with a few hot naughty bits that only added to the already great story. I loved how Meg gets to be the hero, overcoming her fears and taking control to save the day. There were a few creepy parts that gave me chills which only added to how much I enjoyed the story. Joanne Brothwell is my new Author Crush and I am looking forward to reading everything she has written.

Very creepy & cool retelling of Hansel and Gretel! I was very much surprised by how engrossed I was by this novel. The author had some unique and unexpected twists, the most important being Hansel and Gretel are grown up and have a romantic feelings for each other (though they are brother and sister by marriage only!) Dark paranormal elements, magic, romance, and erotic scenes make this a very enchanting adult fairy tale!

A modern well written retelling of Hansel and Gretel where Hansel and Gretel instead of being brother and sister they are or at least become lovers. Hansel is a very disturbed 50-shades-of-grey-kind-of-hottie and Gretel a very much alike Anastasia.I was very pissed because by the time I realisehow good this book was I have already skipped several chapters(i just wanted to read it already)and missed vital information DAMN IT!!!

I received this book from the author for a honest review.
This was definitely a eerie adaptation of Hansel and Gretel. I loved the way the author took a classic and made it her own. It kept me entertained from beginning to end.
The only dislike I had about the book was the time it took Joey and Meg to become involved. One moment they were brother and sister and the next they were rolling around in the forrest. Overall it was a good read.

This is a very different take on the story Hansel and Gretel. if you like the story of Hansel and Gretel as a child and want a grown up version this is it. It also shows how someone can do bad things that they good on the inside. Joey has done bad things in his life due to the fact he had bad things done to him as a child. Meg can see the good in his heart and falls madly in love with him. They have work together to save each other from the forest forsaken and whitch that lives in it.

I wish I'd read the blurb before I started this. Revamped fairy tales never turn out well. It's lazy writing and in this case, the characters so ridiculous I couldn't stand them. What the hell is with female leads who are such easy victims to bad boys with issues? No, the fact she went from virgin to nympho wasn't empowerment. The whole relationship was weird. Dumb story. Just dumb. Ugh.

Well written story with a few good twists and turns. The back and forth and 'sudden love' of the characters put me off a bit.

Wouldn't recommend to readers under 18 due to sexual context
