Despite the odds, Reed Wolfe is making it, by the skin of her teeth. Her dreams and aspirations will have to wait until she can get on her feet. Because right now she’s homeless and churning on a downward spiral.
Falcon Black is existing. Not living, not thriving, just jutting along a path. But when he finds Reed, he can’t resist the urge to help her, lighten her load. But Falcon tends to go overboard, over the line, crossing boundaries he never thought he would and risking her trust in the process.
Can she accept his love or will it end up smothering her?
Lila Felix is full of antics and stories. She refused to go to Kindergarten after the teacher made her take a nap on the first day of school. She staged her first protest in middle school. She almost flunked out of her first semester at Pepperdine University because she was enthralled with their library and frequently was locked in. Now her husband and three children have to put up with her rebel nature in Louisiana where her days are filled with cypress trees, crawfish, and of course her books and writing. She writes about the ordinary people who fall extraordinarily in wild, true love.
The great thing about numbers is that they don’t lie. They never make you thing they mean one thing but really mean another. And when you find the answer? It always makes sense.
Falcon has always been the responsible one, the glue that holds the Black family together. You may not know it by looking at him, with his sexy mohawk, tattoos and piercings, but he is a very sweet guy who takes care of his family and isn’t into casual hookups or partying. He takes school seriously, numbers are his thing and he loves the 80’s.
FALCON BLACK On a scale of one to ten for bad assness, I get a five. And that’s only because the tats, the piercings, and the mohawk give me three points.
Reed Wolfe hasn’t had it easy. After both of her parents were killed in an accident, she bounced from foster home to home until she was 18. Now she is struggling to get by, living in her car for the time being. Things start to turn around when she gets a job at Nellie’s bookstore. She joins the derby team and fits right in with Nellie. She meets Falcon, who does all the accounting/books for Nellie’s store and his family’s restaurant.
REED WOLFE
Reed and Falcon hit it off. Reed is a little shy at first, but she becomes close with Nellie and Falcon’s mom, so it makes it a little easier to come out of her shell. Falcon knows something is up with Reed, and when he figures it out, he has to help her. It’s just in his nature to take care of people. Reed isn’t used to being taken care of like this. Falcon’s family thinks he is doing too much and moving too fast for Reed and that it will freak her out and push her away. Falcon and Reed’s story had some heartbreaking moments, but it was beautiful!
I want to know if guys like Falcon Black really exist, and if so, where can I find one? Lila Felix creates AMAZING men! Every book she writes has one, and Flacon is my absolute favorite! How it Rolls was romantic, sweet, and just a perfect love story. It was great to catch up with the Blacks, especially Nellie and Owen. I am so looking forward to Maddox’s book! Love this series!!!
Some of my favorite quotes...
There’s nothing in the world that can make you get all rilled up like a Roller Derby bout. Hot girls fighting and clawing at each other? Yeah, that’s my idea of a Saturday night.
It’s not often for me that reality is better than fantasy. This is one of those times. Reed next to me, in my bed, breathing against my chest. She was the Diane Court to my Lloyed Dobler. Yes, I relate everything back to the 80’s- sue me.
Somebody remind me to keep my phone away from Falcon. If I wake up to White Wedding one more time I was gonna scream. Yes, its’s only been one time. One morning, waking up to Billy Idol is quite enough.
“I love you more than I’ve ever loved anything in my life, and probably ever will. I can’t imagine a time in the future when you’re not there.”
“You’ve given me everything. Your home when I had none, your heart when I lost mine, a home of my own when you saw one perfect for me, a ring to solidify our love, you’ve given me everything, Falcon.”
Falcon: straight laced but is covered in tattoos and has a mohawk. Poster child for irony. Reed:orange haired, derby girl who was bounced from foster home to foster home until she was 18 and homeless.
Will these two lonely hearts find each other and fall in love?
It's official! I am a cradle robber. I am in love with a 20 year old and his name is Falcon Black.
He was so sweet, perfect, thoughtful, giving, loving, responsible, broody, romantic, swoon worthy, and whatever else you can come up with. I am not sure what he could have done to make me love him even more. He was seriously perfect.
I loved how we got to see Owen and Nellie :) That put a smile on my face.
I liked Reed, I really did. But, I hated the ending
Mad love going out to Sylvia Black! LOVE that woman.
Oh and what's up with no Epi. :(
I normally don't read sneak peeks and teasers, but I ended up reading a snippet of Maddox's book. EEK! I want it out...NOW!
Where's the LOVE button? Loved. As always. Lila's books are sweet and amazing. She's so great at wording and length. The way she describes things so well, but doesn't over describe and make me want to skip things is a gift of a great writer.
And she writes really great men, too. In honesty, I'm never really that focused on her girls. :) She alternates POVs in her novels, but I just can't wait to get back to the guy's POV the whole time. The girls always have a chip on their shoulder, had a rough childhood and been through so much and you feel for them for it, but the guys are what keep my attention. And Falcon is no exception.
If you're looking for romance, lots of it, men or care deeply for their family and women, and an author that is as sweet as her books? Pick this up.
I really loved the beginning, but then by 60% it started to lose me. I am not sure how I feel about Reed. I did not hate her, but I did not love her. Not sure how much I even liked her. She did not WOW me. She was just there. Falcon is so sweet, I am not sure what he got out of the relationship. He gave her everything and I am not sure what he got in return. I know Reed came from nothing, but I think even emotionally, she did not give Falcon everything he deserved. There was something that bothered me about her. I am not sure if she just appeared moody to me or not appreciative. I do not know.
We had some continuation of Nellie and Owen whom I adored. They make cameos and we find out how they are doing.
I absolutely loved "How It Rolls," and it was even better than the first book in the Love and Skate Series! I completely fell in love with Falcon because his character is pretty darn near perfect. I also loved Reed's character as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the story line and I'm very much looking forward to starting "Down 'N' Derby" next!
I took my time with this one. I didn't want to rush through the book and be left crying because it was over. Nope, instead I savored it and swam around in it. Fully clothed of course. Hey this is a clean YA read people. Let’s stay focused here. Anyhow, said it before, guess I am meant to say it again. Felix gets better and better with each book. No two books of hers are the same, and the romance is so very swoon worthy.
Wasn't entirely sure how to feel about a guy who was named Falcon at birth. I mean, yeah it’s a cool nickname and all, but will I be able to take him seriously? And for a parent to actually name him that? Well it’s preposterous. But when that boy steps into this book, everything else is forgotten. Who the flip cares if his name is Falcon, Harry, or Otis. Sure the boy goes a little overboard when it comes to those he loves but that’s just it. He loves. And he loves with his whole heart and soul. Here is a little free advice for you teen girls…when a guy loves like Falcon does…just know that he is a keeper.
And then we have Reed. I flat out adored her. In fact I was looking forward to her scenes so much, I started getting a little antsy when I noticed that each chapter was just Falcon for the first little bit. But then again it is Falcon, so you can't really get turned off by that, can you? Nope. Now back to Reed. I was glad to see that Falcon slowly brought her out of her shell; allowing her to be herself, even if she was withholding some truths from him. She goes from being this timid girl to a semi confident lady just days into their relationship. Reed is not 100% confident in herself, but it is one heck of a start. People can’t help but love her when they meet her. Soon Nellie and her become close and Reed ends up helping her through a very tough time. And yes, it is possible to love Nellie even more in this story too. Girl attached herself to our hearts in LOVE AND SKATE and decided she wasn’t done with us just yet.
Oh yeah, if you know Felix, you know there will be romance. That make-you-weak-in-your-knees romance. The leave-you-breathless-wanting-more romance. That never-wanna-leave-this-bed romance. Oh yeah, sweet romance. And I can never get enough of her mad skills. Lady dishes it out and leaves us readers needing more.
My most favorite parts were the start of each paragraph. They were hilarious and sometimes sad. But I loved them all the same. I looked forward to each chapter knowing I was going to get something totally off the wall. And Felix didn’t disappoint.
Please, please read this book. I promise you will love it to pieces. But if you haven’t read LOVE AND SKATE yet, you will want to. Trust me. And Holy Roller Skates is DOWN N' DERBY gonna be awesome. Just sayin!
Fav Lines..
She called me a stiff? I think that's worse than when Nellie calls me a square or a suit. I was a suit. And why in the Hell did I care if some girl called me a stiff? She could take her orange hair and stuff it up her...Oh who was I kidding, I wanted to be her hairbrush. **** Because whether my eyes were closed or open, he was my dream. **** "One way or the other, come back to me, in a month, or a year, when you're old, a haunt in my dreams, an invasion of my sanity, make a way to come back."
Just a warning: How It Rolls is going to make you long for your very own Falcon Black; a gentle, kind, tattooed, eyeglass- and newsboy-hat-wearing, profoundly decent and generous, financial wunderkind!! I'm now a Lila Felix fangirl, but, Lila, even more so, I'm a Falcon Black fangirl!
Reed Wolfe has an indomitable spirit. Barely getting by, she is a homeless young woman who is totally alone. However, despite this, she has her pride, her dreams...she has goals for herself. Getting the job at Nellie Forrester-Black's bookstore is the first step to a better life. Meeting Nellie's brother-in-law, Falcon, who does the books for the shop, makes things better and worse at the same time. Falcon Black is what you might call 'stuck' when it comes to his personal life, or lack thereof. He's really just floating along through life. Meeting Reed changes all of that in a hurry. Falcon recognizes the need and desperation in this young woman, and he simply cannot stop himself from helping, from trying to lighten her burden. He can't stop himself from falling in love either. Falcon tends toward grand gestures, and Reed is a proud young woman despite her circumstances. Their love for one another could be a problem or a solution.
Honestly, I don't know what to say other than FALCON. BLACK. That's really all you need to know. Review over. Go read the book. Talk to me when you too have fallen head over heels in love with FB ;-)
Okay, fine. So, I'll add a bit more. With How It Rolls, Lila Felix gives us another lovely, charming, quirky, sweet story. Once again it's quite innocent and wholesome, and, once again, that only seems to make me love the story and the characters that much more!
I felt so much for Reed. This quiet, adorable young woman has been through so much, and I just wanted to wrap her up in my arms and take care of her, much like Falcon did.
Again, Falcon's mother, the family matriarch, is such a wonderful addition to the story. She brings comfort to her family, and even in only a few scenes throughout the story, she managed to bring comfort to me, as well.
As the story takes place four years after Love & Skate, Lila gives us wonderful scenes with Nellie and Owen, but especially Nellie. I think I came to love her even more in this book. She and Falcon are such good friends, and I loved their relationship.
Annnnd...I'm back to Falcon ;-) I absolutely adore him. I find myself *still* smiling when I think of him, and it's been days since I finished the book! There is something about him that simply makes me utterly happy.
The characters are the key to this series and what I love most about it. Lila, keep the books coming! This series just keeps getting better!! On to book number three...

FAV line everrrrrr everest ever: My seven a.m. teacher was from France. And he spoke Frenglish. Sometimes it was funny, but when he announced which chapters we should study and the names came out in English, but the chapter numbers came out in French, I wanted to strangle the sacre bleu out of him.
FAV quote from Falcon: "One way or the other, come back to me, in a month, or a year, when you’re old, a haunt in my dreams, an invasion of my sanity, make a way to come back.”
My latest book boyfriend: Falcon. Kellan-like needy and vulnerable. A too serious should-probably-take-a-chill-pill sweet, loving, strong, soft, adorable, good, loyal, stand-up guy. Some will probably think he needs to "get a life". She is the love of his life from the moment he sees her. No cheating. He needs to be with her and love her and give her everything she needs. He wants to bind her to him forever yet even when he knows he might lose her, he does right by her. He has everything: loving family, financial security. It means nothing without her. Obsessed, protective, possessive and jealous. In his quite non dramatic way. He cries during a tear-jerker moment to do with his family. She irritates me but is young and hardworking and adores him and has more than her fair share of problems. Poor girl.
It's book 2 of the Love and Skate Series. Don't have to read bk 1 but it was nice catching up with the Hxh from bk 1. Never thought I'd like this one. I nearly didn't read it cos I judged the book by its cover and didn't think I'd connect with punk-style H. Editing problems. Ending too abrupt, although they are together and I'm happy about where they are. Possible installment, although the next book in the series covers another hero and heroine.
ok i feel horrible for sayin this but if uv read 'Love and Skate', u don really have to sit through this one the first book has been basicly rearranged and presented in 'How It Rolls' the same 'oohs' and 'aaahs' unfortunately it does not offer anything new m sorry Lila, u knw i am a big fan!
so wer i think things went wrong is wen the series continued with the same derby AND the same family that kinda automatically sort of tunnels the creative outlet and lets face it, there is only so much u can do with the same 'common ground' either switch the derby or the family, or the series is jst gona be a paler repetition of the last installment
that being said, yes it was infinitely cute n gooey n mushy and all that though unlike Owen and Nellie, i dint quite get the 'instant gratification' factor with Falcon (btw how cool is that name huh) and Reed n it was a lil too many chapters for my liking should have kept it short
but all of that can not keep me from lookin forward to the next book coz i LOVED, absolutely L-O-V-E-D, the first book keeping my fingers crossed for something refreshing :)
Omg Falcon will you marry me? He. Was. Awesome! He's so sweet and cute and he has a Mohawk! PERFECT! I like that he was the sensible one out of all the boys. I also liked the heroine and how strong she was. They both were an awesome match for each other and the romance was perfect. Another fantastic Love and Skate novel.
I read Love and Skate book #1 and was completely hooked on the series had to get my hands on book #2 right away!
Falcon & Reed's story is everything I wanted and more! Full of Soul deep love, lol funny humor, and emotional growth.
I think Falcon is my fave Black Brother hold on to UR heart this beautiful boy will steal it Tall dark N delicious coverd in sexy Ink and sweet as pie!
Reed is awesome I absolutely love her personality she's spunky N loving with all that Wild Orenge Hair!
Lila is and always will be my go to Author for Epic Romance!!! 5 Stars All The Way!

For the second time in my life, I have had the desire to dye my hair crazy colors and strap on some roller skates. There is something about this series of books that makes me want to become a rebel. I fell in love with Nellie and Owen in Love and Skate, and as soon as I saw that Lila Felix had come out with another roller derby inspired book, I had to read it. Bad ass girls skating their hearts out while figuring life out makes for some good reading.
Falcon Black is the glue that holds his family together. If you have a problem, call Falcon. Need a favor? Call Falcon. He is a 40 year old man trapped in a 20 year olds body. He doesn’t party, doesn’t drink or go to the club. He works. He takes care of the books for his mothers diner, Nellie’s book store and he has recently taken on Nellie’s roller derby team, too. He’d do anything for anyone, but he’s missing out on life. He’s not really living and he’s tired of being alone.
“She called me a stiff? I think that’s worse than when Nellie calls me a square or a suit. I was a suit. And why in the Hell did I care if some girl called me a stiff? She could take her orange hair and stuff it up her… Oh, who was I kidding, I wanted to be her hairbrush.”
With bright orange hair and a car for a “home”, Reed Wolfe has just taken a job at Cindi’s Indies. Her new boss Nellie is sweet, understanding and tough as nails. She wasn’t looking for anything but a paycheck until she saw him. Falcon Black. With his mohawk, tattoos, piercing and business attire. The man was a walking contradiction. After being moved from foster home to foster home and then being dumped out on the street like last weeks garbage, Reed has trouble believing that anyone could possibly want her enough to stick around. Could Falcon really want her as his forever?
“Tonight, I realized that I didn’t belong in his world. He had this perfect family who always were there for each other and actually cared. I didn’t even know how to begin to fit into that family as Falcon’s girlfriend or person he was dating or whatever. I just didn’t.”
Falcon is probably the sweetest man to ever grace the pages of a book. It’s impossible not to fall for his charm and pure heart. He doesn’t always go about things the way he should, but his heart is consistently in the right place.
Reed is lost and looking for her way through a life that seems almost hopeless. She’s had no one to depend on but herself. It’s time she learns what a real family is like.
If you read Love and Skate, you’re familiar with Nellie and Owen. You’ll be happy to know that they play a pretty large part in this book as well. The only gripe I have is that I felt it ended very abruptly. I would have liked to have spent a little more time with Falcon and Reed, but then again there is going to a be another book in the series so maybe I’ll get my wish.
How It Rolls is a effortless read. Lila Felix is an exceptional writer who tackles some pretty tough issues. Her characters are always so strong and although they may take the long way, they always seem to end up just where they’re supposed to be. I’d recommend any of her books, but especially this series. I’ve enjoyed both novels and can not wait to see what she comes up with next.
Falcon is like a walking irony. He is so responsible and suit-like (is that a word? am I turning into Nellie?) but then he also has piercings, tattoo sleeves, and a mohawk. I seriously couldn't help but SWOON every other page for this man! He seriously has the best heart ever and his intentions are so sweet. All he wants to do is take care of the ones that he loves which unfortunately for them pushes them away sometimes. I guess lucky for him he finds that perfect girl that really needs taken care of.
Reed (yep that's the girl's name) is really left broken. She was a orphaned at a young age and didn't have much luck in the foster care system. She was left homeless but has to much pride to admit it to anyone. She is also one kick-a$$ derby girl but with Orange hair!
Falcon and Reed have such a great relationship. They both need someone to care for and for someone to care for them. Together they make this book full of clean, swoony romance! You can't help but root for them while they are both holding back their secrets.
This review just wouldn't be complete without me mentioning how I love the family. Everyone has a role and they are all so accepting of each other. They are also so supportive. In Love & Skate Falcon was really supportive of Nellie and they became best friends and now Reed and Maddox are best friends. I mean can you say best brother-in-laws EVER! I can't help but love Sylvia, the mom, she is just the momma bear of the family.
The ending was a little off for me. I felt like it ended really abruptly and I was left wanting a lot more of Falcon and Reed!
Thank goodness that there is a 3rd book because my craving for the Black brothers has not been satisfied. And that teaser of Down N' Derby at the end of the book KILLER! I need it like yesterday!
I loved How It Rolls just as much as Love & Skate and encourage any fans of the series to read this one too and any new comers to pick these up!
Solid, studious, serious, sexy?(Sorry, the guys don’t do it for me, but I’ve had to jump over enough drool puddles to know the ladies think so) All seem to describe Falcon. Yeah I wonder how many fights he got into in school with a name like that!
“She calls me 'bird boy' and Hawkeye every time she gets a chance. Last year she bought me a bow and arrow for my birthday and told me it was for when the Avengers were called into action.”
Enter the orange-locked and mysterious Reed Wolfe, a new employee at Nellie’s Bookstore where mutual sparks fly between the two of them.
“Wait, was I already planning on kissing him? Put out the wanted posters, I’d lost it.”
And without giving anything away of course, one lesson that can be taken away from their relationship is simple. Don’t take Falcon on a cruise.. because he will go overboard!
“You’re gonna have to start being careful what you wish for. He-Man’s not gonna let those things go. He’ll go overboard every time.”
We have a sweet and swoon worthy relationship, because what else can you have with one of the Black boys anyway? Though unfortunately they take out a subscription to needlessly dramatic magazine, boy how I wish Mama Black would whack them both with a rolling pin.
I’m not sure what it was, but Falcon and Reed, though awesome, just didn't connect with me and I found myself waiting around for more Nellie because she totally stole the show. She ended up with some of the best lines and the most heartbreaking of plot lines. That rebellious scene-stealer!
One of the great facts of this series is that the characters in this ever growing family don’t vanish or fade away when the next book rolls around. And I look forward to my next visit with the Black family!
How it Rolls was a book I was highly anticipating. Was it worth the wait and did it exceed my expectations? Oh yeah and so much more...
I adored Falcon from Love & Skate and couldn't wait for his story. Falcon is absolutely perfect. He is the care taker of the family. Nellie's best friend and the "suit" of the family. He rocks is awesome Mohawk while wearing converse shoes and his suit. Yes an actual suit, not his birthday suit. Get your head out of the gutter.
Reed is a beautiful, orange haired and too thin girl who catches Falcon's eye quickly. Reed is hiding a few secrets that she is embarrassed and not ready to spill.
True to the Black Family way they take Reed into their home and into their hearts. Reed finds a family that she hasn't known in a long time.
However, nothing is ever perfect when there are secrets involved...
Lila's books are a breath of fresh air. There aren't a lot in this genre being written anymore. How awesome is it that you can always trust to know that her books are suitable for the YA audience? From page 1 she grabs your attention and you have to make yourself put it down. I know I must sound like a broken record because I say this every dang time. She sets the scene and you live it with these characters. I am invested in the Black family and will follow them wherever they may lead.
Best part of the book: WOW! Just ... WOW! I have loved everyone of Lila's book. Emerge is my favorite, until this one. How It Rolls is a spin off of Love & Skate, this is actually Falcon's story. I loved Falcon because he is not what he seems. He has a mohawk, tattoos and piercings...bet you are thinking "rock band"...WRONG! He is in college and has a way with numbers and money! Faclon's path soon crosses with Reed. Oh Reed *sniff* I wanted to reach through my Kindle and just hug her. She has had such a tough life and Falcon cannot seem to get enough of her. Along with their story we get an extended story of Nellie and Owen. Of course, Lila through in some twist that made me *gasp* *cry* and *yell* and I loved every word.
Not so great about the book: Ugh, the ending! I wanted more! I could not get enough of this story! Luckily, Lila is doing another spin off for Maddox's story and I hoping that there is more Falcon and Reed in it. AND since this one was 252 pages, maybe I could get 275 or even 300!
First off I have to ask..Can I please have Falcon? Can I please?I absolutely loved How it Rolls.I think Every woman or girl if you will wants a guy like Falcon.I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Lila Felix's latest Book,How It Rolls. It was wonderfully written and well played out.Everything Lila Felix Touches turns to gold. This is the Story of Falcon and Reed.Reed is homeless and Falcon has money but is just existing..he loves to nurture people and help them out.In his quest to help Reed out he may just push her a bit far.But Falcon is so sweet he can't help it.What I adore about this book is that we still get to see Nellie and Owen and whats in store for them..and you can bet your bottom dollar there are surprises!Your going to want to read Love and Skate first.I would not say its totally necessary but you will miss out on Nellie and Owen.Overall This book deserves High praise and I hope it gets it.You Rocked again Lila and I look forward to Book 3!
I really loved Falcon and Reed. I couldn't help but feel that there wasn't actually a plot to begin with and even when I could spot it, it moved too slow for my tastes. And the end was too rushed but all in all, it was a really nice read about a ornage haired homeless girl and a tattooed, mohawked, pierced nerd.
Loved Falcon & Poppy! Felix's writing is so awesome in this book! It was actually one of those books that you didn't want to read - because you really didn't want it to end. Can't wait for book 3!!!
I seriously love it up until the last 25%. I felt like the conflict that got brought up was blown wayyyy out of proportion and honestly the whole fight felt fake and unrealistic to me. It felt to me that the ending was rushed and when she came back it was like one mediocre conversation after 6 months of silence and book the whole relationship is fixed! Really love Falcons heart and love for his family and his girl. Really was enjoying this book but that ending.... Not the best by any means.

Sooo good! If you love skate books and romances, this is the book for you! Lila as always, has hit the mark with this one. Its enjoyable, it has the appropriate amount of tension, and the main female lead is believable and also sassy. The male love interest is also great, and I like that they don't fall instantly in love, but rather they have to work through their issues like a real life HEA.
If you love fun, engaging books, you will like this one.
This book was not for me. Unfortunately, the dialogue did not sounds natural and it kept distracting me from the story. Will not be rating this book since I did not finish it🙈
I will start with Falcon. I already mentioned that Falcon is dreamy, right? Well let me explain more. He is the perfect mix of good boy and bad. He is super smart (swoon!) and edgy too. He has piercings, a mohawk and tattoos. He wears Chucks with business attire. He goes to school and invests money. He manages the money of his family and friends’ businesses. He is an all-around good guy. Plus, when he loves, he loves with all of himself. He gives of himself fully and doesn’t expect anything in return. Dreamy… am I right?!?
Reed is a girl with a troubled past. Living on her own now with nothing to her name but the clothes on her back and her car, she seeks out employment to start her life. She meets Nellie (of Hellie as she is so fondly called by her derby friends) and the rest is history. Reed starts to work in the bookstore Nellie owns; the same bookstore that Falcon keeps financial books for. Reed has trouble accepting the love and friendship from Falcon and I felt like I was waiting for the shoe to fall the whole time I read… just waiting for her to find out just how sweet and caring Falcon is and turn around and break his heart.
These two fall in love. Ahhhh. And then Falcon does something that defines who he is in my mind. He does something for Reed that she wants but that will inevitably tear them apart. Noooo! I was angry at Reed. How dare she break Falcon’s heart. I mean, I would happily be with someone that loved me that much. But, the truth is she doesn’t even know how much she is loved by him until her decisions are made.
Just a little side note… I just love Maddox (the third brother) for his no nonsense attitude and for setting Reed straight in her error. He is my favorite brother and I am so glad that he has a special role in this book.
My thoughts
I loved, loved, loved this story. I loved the first book and knew Lila wouldn’t disappoint but I loved this one more than I thought. That stupid grin is because of the witty banter that is shared between the characters. It is for the fun derby descriptions. It is for the hilarious start to every chapter in which you get a look into the mind of the characters. For example, at the beginning of one of Falcon’s chapters, it says this…
"Mondays were the only days that I didn’t have classes so I spent the day getting a massage and taking a cooking class, along with a full manicure and pedicure. Plus, I brushed my unicorn. Ugh…"
Seriously, how funny is that?!? I laughed out loud and thankfully I was at home so the only strange looks I got were from my kids. In another one of these intros, Reed talks about her love of cookies. Another, Falcon mentions Stuart Smalley. These are just funny intros to the chapters and made me giggle time and again. Not all are funny though and you see a glimpse of feeling in them too. I enjoyed these intros a lot.
The story? Absolutely fantastic. Like I said, Lila’s writing is so easy to get into. I believed that Reed lived in her car. I believed that Falcon was a hot accountant. I did. I also got angry with them for being so darn stupid with each other. I wanted to strangle poor Reed when she couldn’t figure out what she wanted. I wanted to hug poor Falcon when he just gave and gave of himself only to have it thrown back in his face.
Final thoughts…
You have to read these books people. They are young adult books so there is no need to worry about too-hot-to-handle scenes. In fact, s-e-x is not even part of the story line in them really. Lila has these sweet people waiting for marriage. Again, ahhhh. I give both the books in this series 5 big flashing stars. I loved them. I can’t wait for more!!!
I adore Lila Felix’s style of writing and this one was no exception. It is the cutesy romance that we all love to gush over and so beautifully written. This book is Falcon and Reed’s story.
I loved Falcon in Love and Skate and I was so excited when I realised that it was his story. To look at he would be every mothers horror story if their daughters brought him home to meet them. He has a Mohawk, he has tattoos and he has piercings…but as the saying goes, never judge a book by it’s cover and you most definitely should not judge Falcon Black…the man is perfection…he is an old man in a young mans body…he is dependable, hard working, utterly selfless, generous to a fault, reliable, intelligent I could go on and on…he is absolute perfection…he loves completely and utterly with his whole heart…one heck of a catch for any lucky girl and the lucky one in this book is Reed.
Reed….my heart was breaking for her, she has been pushed around in foster care since she was 11 years old and has been taking care of herself ever since, at the age of 18 she is chucked out as the welfare cheques dry up and she is homeless..all she has is her beat up car, a few possessions and a few bucks. Luckily she stumbles into Nellie’s bookstore and Nellie can see that she has problems and gives her a job. Little does anyone know that Reed is living in her car. She is painfully thin, has bright orange hair, is timid and shy….but…..she is also another Roller Derby player and this soon comes to light and we see another side to Reed.
As we know Falcon is the brains in the family on the business side and he does the books for Nellie at the bookstore, he soon sees Reed and is fixated by the girl…he is overwhelmed by feelings and the need to look out for her. I loved this bit “She could take her orange hair and stuff it up her……..oh, who was I kidding, I wanted to be her hair brush”
We see many sides to Falcon and Reed on this journey and they are both adorable as are Nellie and Owen as we continue their story throughout the book too and the whole Black family.
I loved the beginnings of each chapter with the little snippets of wisdom, they were fabulous. Again, this book was alternate POV’s which I love.
Again, this is definitely a YA book, no steamy scenes but just amazing chemistry, a gorgeous romantic story told as ever beautifully. It will make you swoon, it will make you smile and it will make you laugh.
A leaving snippet, the first time Reed says those magic 3 little words and it took her some time..
““This Falcon. The one who smiles like I’ve rocked his world. The one who plans the most amazing dates. The one who buys me skates. Don’t get me wrong, I dig solemn Falcon, I do. But I love that no one but me gets to see this part of you. It’s like a secret you save just for me. I love how you keep things for me” “I love you so much”, he leaned forward and put his forehead on my chest like loving me wore him out. I nearly choked as my next words came out, “I love you Falcon”. He sucked in a swift breath and looked back into my eyes.”
How is rolls is such a great romance. To look at the cover of the book and see this guy with a Mohawk and tats, you would think he was some tough rebel guy, but in realty Falcon Black is one of the sweetest guys ever. He may have a rough exterior, but he has a heart the size of Texas. After being wounded by an old girlfriend, Falcon has pretty much given up the dating scene, throwing himself into his work. He's a business and accounting major, and is very good at it, managing the books for his family's restaurant and his bother and sister-in-law, Owen and Nellie's book store. Nellie is also Falcon's best friend. When Falcon finds out Nellie has hired a new employee, Reed Wolfe, and prepares to have Reed fill out the necessary paperwork, the last thing he expected was to see a girl, much less a beautiful girl, a girl that immediately captures his heart.
What Falcon doesn't know, is that when Reed sees him, she is crushing on him big time also. Reed is 18 years old, has tangerine orange hair, and has grown up in foster care ever since her parents died when she was 11 years old. At the age of 18, when her foster parent's could no longer get money for her, she was kicked out on the street. Now, barely scraping by, she is too proud to tell anyone that she doesn't have anywhere to live, and is also very cautious about getting too close people. Despite all of this Reed and Falcon grow closer, the attraction between them undeniable. Falcon's biggest "drawback," if you can call it that, is doing too much for people he loves, and though he is very careful, he really goes overboard with Reed. He tries to keep things on the down low, but secrets always have a way of coming out, and when Falcon confesses something he has done for Reed, it pushes her over the edge and she runs. The question is will she every come back?
I really love How it Rolls. It is such a sweet romance. Lila Felix has the theme of he roller derby going in this book, with Reed joining Nelli'es roller derby team, which I really enjoyed. Of course Nellie is a hoot and keeps you laughing also. I just fell in love with Falcon. I love a guy with tats, but a Mohawk and pierced tongue have never been my thing, that is until I got to know Falcon, and it totally works for him. He is such a hottie. I liked the way the relationship progressed between Falcon and Reed. Even though it was a instant attraction, the love and romance grew over time, and the romance was really sweet. The story progressed at a great pace and is told from mainly Falcon's point of few, though there are several chapters from Reed's point of view also.
This is the second book in Lila Felix's Love and Skate series, but can easily be read as a stand alone. If you love romance, then How it Rolls is a sweet, clean, feel-good romance with a different and creative twist. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
Leaving after the previous story, we are now a few years later and this is Falcon Black's story. He's in college, helps out at the restaurant, the bookstore and that's pretty much his life. No dating, no parties, no hanging out with friend etc. it's kind of sad actually. But this might change when he meets Reed. Not really sure what it is about her (her legs are definitely part of it), but he's immediately drawn to her.
Reed has not had an easy life, becoming an orphan at eleven and then seven years of foster care have made her jaded and reserved. Not used to the warm and welcoming personalities of the Black family, she's not sure how to handle it all. When Falcon starts paying attention to her and pretty much overwhelming her with kindness, she grabs onto it like she has been starving for love.
I absolutely adore Falcon! He's the nicest, most caring and giving person ever. Pretty much everything he does is to make someone else happy, be it his family, his friends or even a stranger. Almost an old soul in a young body, he's so mature and selfless. You would be an idiot not to fall for him. The only thing is, he's always been doing this stuff for everyone else, it seems they kind of take that for granted. Plus it has caused putting his own happiness on the back burner. But now finally his chance has come in the form of an orange Poppy.
Reed is certainly no idiot and everything goes pretty wel between her and Falcon. She can't believe how lucky she is. But Falcon him being just him, might sometimes be a bit too much, almost smothering, which might just push her away if he's not careful.
How It Rolls certainly has more depth an complexity than the first one. The things Reed has been through and still is going through, are way more dramatic than some boy or girl leaving you for someone else. Reading about her experiences after foster care and being on her own, make you really think about how she's not the only one this has happened to. Certainly very realistic.
I'm still not really liking the "fake" badass thing, because it is in such huge contrast with the personalities of the characters. This time we do get a written visual of a couple of tattoos, but still no explanation on what they mean. Even though seeing what they are, you can pretty much guess.
How It Rolls was definitely better than Love And Skate for me. A bit more realistic and there was some very needed complexity and drama. The third book in the series (Down 'N Derby) will be Maddox story and after reading a little sneak preview and the teasers on Lila Flex' blog, I believe that will be the best one yet.

Well, as I finished Love and Skate, I immediately started How it Rolls. It starts us out 4 years after Love and Skate, and this time we are following one of the Black brothers, Falcon. First, let me say...I LOVE his name.. It may scream badass...but, guess what?? Falcon is tattooed, mohawk wearing, tongue pierced, business major, with the hugest heart of gold found on an individual. You instantly fall in love with him because the genuine compassion that he shares for his family, and even strangers is blinding. But, in his world, he just can't find that right girl. The one who can accept him for who he is. So, we find a bachelor that works so hard day in and day out, saving his money, in hopes that one day he will find that special girl... Which now leads us to Reed...ah Reed, the orange haired girl, derby skater, now working for Nellie (yep, Nellie has her own bookstore) and of course, with Falcon running the financial aspects for Nellie's bookstore, this leads us to these two meeting...and.... Yep, when these two meet....WHAM!! Instant attraction. Just like with book one, told in both characters POV...you are immediately connected to these two characters. I already showed you how easy it is to fall for Falcon, well you easily connect to Reed as well. And as you learn about her story, your heart breaks for her. I was eagerly pushing for Reed and Falcon to get together. He is everything that she needs, and of course, she is the one girl that accepts him whole-heartedly... But, as before...Lila Felix has a knack for showing us that these characters endure real drama. Decisions made in relationships can have good and bad consequences, that everyday, no matter what you may do, sometimes that decision can hurt the one you love. I know that as I have now read both of these books, I am overwhelmed at the depth of these characters. They are so well developed. They are put in to a storyline that provides you with a view in to true love....finding that one partner to share your life and dreams with, and knowing that no matter what happens, they will always love you. Seeing the strength in these relationships, especially when not every individual started out with those kinds of relationships, gives you hope... I can honestly say that these books are part of my favorites...I devoured them and can't wait for the next book to soak up more of these fabulous characters... HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! www.tsktskwhattoread2.blogspot.com
Falcon Black is the younger brother of Owen from Love and Skate Book #1. Falcon is tattooed, tongue pierced twice and mohawk wearing, business major! You'd never guess by his appearance that he is the responsible one, the glue that holds the Black family together and has a heart of gold. He does the books for the Black family restaurant, and for Nellie roller derby team and her bookstore, where he crosses paths with the new hire Reed Wolfe. Reed hasn't had an easy life, her parents died in a fire and bounced around in foster care at 18 she was sent on her way with only $200. She is struggling to get by and living out of her car. She gets a job at Nellie's book store and joins the roller derby team fitting right in with Nellie.
"She called me a stiff? I think that's worse than when Nellie calls me a square or a suit. I was a suit. And why in the hell did I care if some girl called me a stiff? She could take her orange hair and stuff it up her... Oh, who was I kidding. I wanted to be her hairbrush."
Falcon and Reed hit it off. Reed is shy at first but building a friendship with Nellie and Falcon's mom makes it easier to break out of her shell. Falcon knows there is something going on Reed, when he finds out she is homeless, he does everything in his power to care and protect her. But the Black family think Falcon is moving too fast and will end up scaring Reed and end with her running away.
"One why or the other, come back to me, in a month, or a year, when you're old, a haunt in my dreams, an invasion of my sanity, make a way to come back."
I just adore this series!!! This is the second installment of Love and Skate Series, although it is about new characters we still have the Nellie, Owen and the rest of family very much present in this book (which I love). This is such a heart warming story that will leave you weak in the knees! Lila has done it again, I'm so hooked by her writing! I'll say it again, I love the purity of these books. Now don't get me wrong... it has, hot, sexy, swoon worth guys but they are well mannered, and the girls are not in a hurry to grow up.
“You’ve given me everything. Your home when I had none, your heart when I lost mine, a home of my own when you saw one perfect for me, a ring to solidify our love, you’ve given me everything, Falcon.”

Right after I finished book 1 I had to read this one. I wanted to keep the story going that was Nellie & Owen. With this book I loved how the family was still talked about and you got to see different people in a new light. I mean what amazing parents we have here that all of their sons are AMAZING men. They make sure the women they love are taken care of first and the rest will come after that.
We meet Falcon who is Owens younger brother and he seems to have a ton of responsibility on his shoulders. He never has told his family “no” when they have asked him to do something. He is always there to help out with a lending hand.
Falcon is at work at Nellie’s book store one day and he sees that the new hire she hired needs to fill out “his” paperwork, so Nellie tells him where Reed is, but when Falcon sees Reed, she is definitely not a “he”. It is love at first sight for Falcon. He had sworn off all women once he and his ex broke it off. He never thought that he would find the one for him and all it took was one look at Reed and he knew without a doubt that she was the one for him.
Reed has had a rough life. She was orphaned at a young age and thrown into one foster home after the other. The day she turned 18 she was tossed out on her butt with a little cash and told to have a nice life. She has been living in her car and landed a job at Nellie’s Book store after she came to sign-up for Derby Try-outs. Nellie told her she would give her a job. But no one knows she is homeless. It is her secret to keep and no ones to find out.
Once Falcon has set his eyes on Reed, he is doing everything he can to get her to let him in. He is hoping that she has the same feelings as he does and wants to open her heart and love him. Reed has had this perception that marriage and love never last. She feels that love & Marriage are destined to be ruined by one thing or another.
Can Falcon show Reed that real love does exist? Can Reed finally let Falcon in and tell him her secrets from her past? Can these two world ever find peace and happiness with one another………
