I was born in India, raised in Canada and California, and I now live in the Pacific Northwest, in a cottage in the woods, with my husband and six rescued cats.

I've always loved to write. When I was seven, I penned my first story about an abandoned puppy on a beach in Bengal. Then, inspired by my maternal grandmother—an English writer who lived in India—I wrote a mystery, The Green Secret, at the age of nine. I illustrated the book, stapled the pages together and pasted a copyright notice inside the front cover. After that, I churned out a series of mysteries and adventure novels with preposterous premises and impossible plots.

Growing up in a small town in Manitoba, Canada, my favorite family event was the weekly drive to the garbage dump to watch for bears. I also loved jaunts to the library, where I checked out the same Curious George books dozens of times. I adored a picture book called The Bear Who Couldn’t Sleep, starring a baby bear who refused to hibernate in winter. My favorite authors were Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie, Alexander Key, C.S. Lewis and others. Every night my dad read to me from C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia or Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

After I grew up and finished university, I tried on jobs like new sets of clothes before rediscovering my love for writing. Since then, my fiction has appeared in several literary journals and an anthology, and I was a contributing writer for three regional history books and local newspapers before I began writing novels.

I've now written five novels for youngsters and four for grownups, including ENCHANTING LILY. Romantic Times magazine gave ENCHANTING LILY a top rating of 4.5 stars: "This is a wonderful story with lovable characters who are trying to start fresh after tragedy touches their lives. Readers will fall head over heels for a four-legged character who almost upstages the two-legged leads.”

Of my recent novel, HAUNTING JASMINE, Melinda Bargreen of The Seattle Times wrote, “Banerjee invites the reader into her colorful, hopeful world, one in which the Northwest island tides coexist with the ghost of Julia Child, Charles Dickens’ mirror, and a sari or two.”

I've had many more wonderful reviews, but like any author, I know what it's like to receive a not-so-nice review. So I'm going to review only the books I love. I want to put positive energy out into the world.

Thank you for reading my books!

Lily Byre a young widow moves to an quaint town of Fairport on Shelter island in the Pacific Northwest.
She is in search of something new, a place to call home and start a vintage clothing business.
While she is moving in to a beautiful cottage a little white cat joins her.
Know one claims her and Lily is finally comfortable with the cat and all the people she is meeting because the cat draws people into her store.

Lovely story.

When Lily’s husband dies, Lily drives away from the big city in California and finds herself on a small island on the Pacific Coast. She falls in love with a cottage that she buys and decides to turn into a business: she sells vintage clothing. A white cat happens by and makes herself at home with Lily and Lily decides to keep her as a shop cat while she tries to make a go of her new business.

This was good. Simple and quick to read, but enjoyable. No surprise that I loved the cat! Chapters alternated between Lily’s point of view and the cat’s. I have to comment on the well-chosen cover with a cat that actually matches the description of the cat in the book, right down to the two different-coloured eyes: green and blue.

I chose this book, as I choose most books, for it's title and cover... without reading the back cover (I never read back covers or the flyleaf!) So I walked into this one knowing nothing about it, nor that it is the 2nd book by the author. It's a romance, who knew? ;-)

It is told from an interesting perspective... from the view of a CAT!

It is an "ok" book, nothing stellar and it really lacks character depth. The main character Lily has lost her husband and is running away to a new life. She has a thing for vintage clothing - her husband was a costume designer, and that is pretty much all we know about him - so she's pulling a UHaul behind her truck and she finally stops on an island. She sees an adorable cottage and decides to turn it into a vintage clothing store. She meets the local veterinarian, who is also struggling... his problem is a flighty wife, and they fall in love...kind of.

That really sums this book up. It's "kind of" a romance book, kind of. There is LOTS of angst and longing. Maybe it's my mood.... I guess that could be it, but it was just a rather blase' book. Not a bad book, and I did enjoy reading it but it was pure fluff!

The hubbie says I didn't smile once while reading it so he thinks it's loser material, but that would be unkind and unfair since the author put her blood, sweat and tears into this (and apparently 2 others). If you are looking to wile away an afternoon reading... something without substance, this is the book for you! :-)

Not good, not horrid, just.... not really anything.

I'm off to find something more! :-)

Lily recently is recovering from the recent death of her husband, Josh. Lily decides to move and start with a fresh new beginning to her life. Lily ends up on Shelter Island. For some reason she is drawn to this place. Lily spots a quiet cottage. Lily decides to purchase the cottage and open her vintage clothing store. Lily gets a new house guest in the form of a white cat with one blue and one green eye. Lily tries to find the cat's owner. It is during her search that she is introduced to the handsome Dr. Cole, the local veterinarian.

I read Haunting Jasmine and thoughly enjoyed it. So I had to check out Mrs. Banerjee's latest book Enchanting Lily. I liked Bella Luna. Although, in the beginning I did not think that Bella helped Lily so much as she got under Lily's feet. As the story progressed, Belly did help Lily to meet a good guy, form friends, and learn to let go of the past. This was a good thing as I felt that Lily needed to let loose. It took me a while to warm up to Lily. The romance between Lily and Dr. Cole was on the slow side. They did not interact a lot with each other in this book. Which, I would have liked to have seen they do more of as I did think there was going to be more romance.

The magical Shelter Island sounds like a place that I would want to live. It was nice to get to see Jasmine from Haunting Jasmine make a brief appearance in this book. This was a quick read. The way the book ended lead me to believe that I have not seen the last of Lily, Bella, or Dr. Cole. Enchanting Lily is a charming read.

I adored HAUNTING JASMINE (loved what was said about books and reading) and have eagerly awaited this companion book set on the same island.

Update: Told in alternate viewpoints, this was a charming story about Lily, a young widow, who moves to an island in Puget Sound and opens a vintage clothing shop. Along the way she learns to trust and love again with the help of an adorable and sweet white cat.

This was a quick feel-good gentle read that would appeal to anyone who likes a little magical realism and loves cats. It's possible that Jan Karon or Donna Ball fans might find these good-hearted village stories appealing.

For maximum reading pleasure although not necessary, read HAUNTING JASMINE first.

This was a sweet and quick to read romance but it is not a book I will remember. I had expected Kitty to play a bigger role. While the cat's awareness of the emotions and needs of the people, and the introduction of spirits haunting the cottage and the vintage clothing, could have been a story in itself, it wasn't explored and left me wanting more. The whole story slid to an unfulfilled ending. Did Lily's romance develop, did she go forward with a successful business partnership, what happened with Bish? Perhaps the author plans to follow up in a later novel?

This story started off well and really went no where much in the end. Reads like so many other stories . A widow packs ip leaves her past life and starts again in a seaside town. Kitty somehow doesn't quite really add a lot to the story nor do the lingering ghosts. The other townsfolk who come into Lily's vintage clothing store and have their lives changed , personalities are never really developed. I didn't really find my self caring about the romance between Lily and the local Vet, Ben. Everything in the story seems to just be skimmed over making for a what is a light fluffy read.

How does a book such as this get published? If there were something else to read in my house I would not have read this story. The first problem with the book and the problem that continued is that there isn't one thing Lily, the main character ever says or ever does that is positive. Every decision she makes is stupid, everything that comes out of her mouth is negative and so the story goes. I know she was depressed from losing her husband but the wandering tale of her woe does not make a good story.

I looked forever for this book after reading a review. And when I finally got my hands on it, it was... fine. Maybe the wait built up my expectations. The premise was cool but it never quite came together in a way that left me satisfied. More of a coincidence than a "magical meant to be."

Easy to read, and the prose is quite enjoyable. The plot was simply good, perhaps the worst thing was the poorly developed romance.
