"In 1899, my grandfather rode a horse from South Australia to Darwin looking for a site to set up a Christian mission station. A year later he rode a Red Bird Bicycle back again. He left a diary about these trips and other adventures during his years as a missionary in West Australia and in Kakadu, near Darwin. His name was Andrew Lennox.
In 2008, I hired a big red Commodore and drove to Andrew’s birthplace in Victoria and then to all the places along his Adelaide-Darwin routes I could sensibly get to by car. I finished up at Kapalga, where there is still evidence of his mission.
After Andrew is about my trip and Andrew’s often foolhardy life. It connects my experiences with bits of history and current events, with lots of pertinent input from Andrew himself. It’s amusing, diverting and informative - ideal bedtime reading for Australia’s Grey Nomads and the thousands of others who drive the outback - or who would like to some day."
