Ghosts and Other Really Big Surprises

Rate this book
A compilation of chilling short stories that explores those shadowy places that are lurking just below the surface of what we choose to call reality.

In 'Best In Show' Harold is perplexed as to why his cucumbers aren't growing as big as the neighbours and he fears that for the first time in years he won't win the trophy at the local fete. Should he try the new 'wonder' fertiliser being sold at the market?

'A Beer at the Consulate' follows the adventures of two young Egyptologists as they uncover sinister goings on at their dig in the ancient Theban necropolis. As they start to question the wisdom of the excavation, events start to take over and threaten to spill over into the outside world.

'Eloise' is a Christmas ghost story for children. When two young Victorian children move into a big old manor house, they soon realise that there is the presence of another child in the house. But why is she there and what is she trying to tell them.

'Consolamentum' is a story of the last days of the siege of Montsegur, when the beleaguered Cathars were preparing to surrender and had hard choices to make. So will one young girl choose to follow her heart or her faith?

'Mam Says' is a bleak post apocalyptic tale of a Britain that has been ravaged by a strange new disease. The economy and social fabric have been destroyed as the authorities struggle to contain the contagion, and for one family what Mam says is law.

'The Scent of Roses' is a tragic tale of a young bridegroom led astray before his honeymoon has even ended. Now his son is ill with scarlet fever, will his spurned lover gain her revenge from beyond the grave?

Have you ever been fixed up with a date by a friend? 'First Date' is a cautionary tale for all of you who, having been disappointed in love, go for the safe option. After all, how do you know what 'Mr Sensible' really has planned for you?

Hazel is not the kind of girl who would ever go on a bird watching weekend, so is very annoyed when her best friend drags her off into the depths of the countryside. Hazel quickly realises that it is the group leader Robin that is actually the main attraction, so as the weekend unfold will Hazel be able to fight her growing attraction to the charismatic bird watcher and also what secrets is Robin hiding?

Cynthia Marsh was born in Australia, but brought up in the UK. She spent most of her childhood with her nose stuck in a book and had to be chased out of the house to go and play during the holidays. Her treasured copy of 'Black Beauty' was very battered and torn!

Cynthia enjoyed writing stories and creating characters as a child, but on going to College in London and then working in the capital for many years her writing was put on a back burner.

She started her first book, 'Pharaoh's Gold - Aten Sequence 1' just before she went travelling in Australia and New Zealand. She was full of good intentions that she would complete it before she returned, but the lure of the sun, beaches and rainforest proved too strong.

When she returned she went back to work and qualified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist. The first book she self-published was 'Ghosts and Other Really Big Surprises', a collection of spooky short stories about ghosts, aliens and the end of the world.

'Pharaoh's Gold - Aten Sequence 1' was finally released into the world just before Christmas 2012 and is a fun YA science fantasy novel about an immortal space being called Aten who gets stuck on Earth because he has run out of fuel. He likes to think he is the ultimate all-powerful bad boy of the Universe, but his long suffering travelling companions Druiit, the half man/half basset hound, the irrepresible 21st century teenager Luke and the temptestuous Galasian cocktail waitress Tuy would beg to differ.

Set in Ancient Egypt, can Aten find the huge quantities of gold that he needs to make his fuel. Or will he come unstuck as he tries to get into the massive treasure vaults under the mighty Temple of Karnak.

The second book of The Aten Sequence, Hall of the Golden Crocodiles, will be availble in the next few weeks.

I love reading short crime and ghost stories, I have read Agatha Christies books before and thoroughly enjoyed them, however I was a bit disappointed with this book most of the stories ended abruptly and always wanted more, and some of them I would not consider as being ghostly tales. I would not recommend this book for the short ghost and crime enthusiasts.
