"This volume contains the Galaxy Express 999 manga stories originally published in Animerica issues vol. 7, no. 3 through vol. 8, no. 2 in their entirety."--T.p. verso.
Leiji Matsumoto (松本零士) is famous for his space operas such as Space Battleship Yamato. His style is characterized by tragic heroes; tall, slender, fragile-looking heroines with strong wills and in some cases, god-like powers; and a love of analog gauges and dials in his spacecraft.
Fun series reminds me of classic "World of hats" trope you see in Star Trek, every race and place with a unique theme and trade-off as a thought experiment. More than just a classic of Space Operas, Galaxy Express 999 is a life Journey, the character growing every episode.
This is an interesting series, but it's also just one small part of a much larger universe of titles, and it's not the first set of manga about these particular characters. Unfortunately, the earlier series has never (to my knowledge) been translated into English, and my access to other manga series in this world is limited. I like some of the adventures, and some are just odd. They're on a journey someplace to save the universe, but in all five volumes of this series, they only get to the point where they realize that their journey is just beginning.
