The Art of iPhone Photography explores how 45 of today's best iPhonegraphers from around the world conceived, composed, and created some of their finest and best-known pieces - all in their own words. Through a step-by-step presentation of each artist's vision, creative decisions, and techniques, beginning through advanced iPhoneographers will immediately be able to apply what they learn and take their own photographic art to the next level.
Key features of the book
Always on, always at hand, and inconspicuously deployed, today's smartphones empower us to record the world in ever newer and more personal ways. By leveraging the photo-editing applications found on the iPhone, professional and amateur photographers alike are able to create not only editorial imagery, but also creative art.
"Nicki Fitz-Gerald and Bob Weil, at iPhoneographyCentral.com, have built a community dedicated to the burgeoning collaboration between art and technology that is iPhoneography. Their site, and now this book, offer extensive, in-depth tutorials both for budding iPhoneographers looking to advance their craft, and professionals attempting to harness a new toolkit in service of their vision.
What they bring to the table is their belief that 'revealing the man behind the curtain' does not diminish the teacher. Technique does not the artist make, but it does enable the newcomer to find his or her own voice. With thousands of apps available and more flooding the market daily, every new iPhoneographer wonders, What apps should I use? The answer to that question is so complex, with so many variables, that an illustrated tutorial such as this becomes an invaluable tool. There is really nothing like it.
It does not offer the advice of a single artist or showcase images from a small artistic segment. Indeed, it offers up stories, knowledge, tips, and secrets from many of the key players in the formation of this movement, showcasing more than 40 artists and tutorials and 80 pages of iPhonic art."

If you find yourself addicted to iphonography, this book will send you spiraling deeper into the magical abyss. And if you are only slightly curious of this phenomenon, this book will make you wanna do the mobile-art dance after the first few pages.
As a "traditional" photographer I was probably the most skeptical of all when it came to cell phone photography. Then I upgraded my flip phone to one of those brainy phones. I must admit, the digital age reduced my love for photography. Instant gratification was never my forte but something happened when I started shooting with my mobile phone.
This book has given me the drive to start "seeing"again. It shares the work of several artists who graciously share their style and technique. Well written tutorials for several apps fill this book, along with some of the most inspiring art I've ever seen. The best part, in my opinion, is the personal insight that each artist shares. They tell us their story about the birth of each image. They reveal who they are, where their inspiration comes from and why their story is important to them.
A fair warning for the button pushing app user, this is a book that dives deep into the use of specific application and is not for those seeking instant effects. It covers complex topics like levels, curves, exposure, masking, cloning, layering, etc. it demands to be read from cover to cover.
I have the digital version and view it on my ipad.
A truly inspiring book. it demonstrates that one can produce great photos and art directly on your smart phone. At first glance the amazingly diverse collection of images from contributors from all over the world looks a little unobtainable but each image comes with a tutorial, 45 in total, that shows the steps and the thought processes behind each one. Instead of buying art for your walls or as gifts you can produce your own images, choose a tutorial follow the steps and soon you will have confidence to branch out and create your own unique images. I highly recommend this book as a resource for artists and photographers and as an introduction to a new hobby.
The title says it all, this book is serious about creating lovely works of photographic art using an iPhone and about a zillion different filter apps. The photographs are complex and beautiful and the how-it-was-done is easy to follow. The best part of the book is the two appendices, which provide guide to different apps and also specific goals e.g. borders, color to b&w, that sort of thing.
If you are serious about using your iPhone for a tool for photographic self expression, take a look at this one. If you want to learn how to take better snapshots for your own use, this is not a good choice.
I am so honored to be one of the artists featured in this book! I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to create beautiful art work from their iPhone or iPad!!! The tutorials featured are very straight forward and easy to understand. This book covers straight photography edits to the more abstract and fantastical edits. I don't think anyone would be disappointed with this book --- it simply provides concise information on how to make amazing photos!
For inspiration and exact information on how iphonographers have achieved the images they take using an iPhone. Each photographer explains their total creation process...apps used, order of use and fine-tuning. Just the book I was looking for to move my work to the next level.
A new tech invention into the art scene and we have to conceptually ask - is this art or just machine production ?
The iPhone is everywhere. It is able to take images immediately and discreetly . This book grows the principles that are useful to use the advantages and power of the iPhone in capturing stunning and memorable images - in tutorial format.
The first section of the book has inspiring photos . Simple ideas for better images . The second part ( and longer part) is about creation of images - by merging and editing - surrealistic images . More IT artwork than it is direct photography
I love this book. There’s so much inspiration through photos and step-by-step processes each photographer uses as they edit their images and I’ve already started using some of the apps and ideas to develop my own style of photography. I’d love to own this book so I could refer to it as often as possible.
It was interesting to follow the creative process of a number of iPhone photographers from original idea to completed photograph. I knew there were lots of photography apps out there, and this book gave me some idea of which ones I might enjoy using, both for shooting and for post-processing (mostly post-processing, which is the book's primary focus). I'd have liked more about the art of shooting better photos with an iPhone than it provided. I've learned more in that regard from mailings from the online iPhone Photography School.
That said, I did find the book inspiring and learned about some photographers whose work and backgrounds interested me enough that I looked them up online, and I even purchased one of Marian Rubin's e-books.
The tutorials are personal and not merely technical so you get an intimate look at the work and the process of creating it. Be careful though - many of the apps described so lovingly have recently been "upgraded," which means they are "infested with insects" and may no longer work at all. But the iphone art world moves so quickly that there is usually a reasonable substitute. This won't prevent you from getting wistful for What Might Have Been, but it will save you some money and some storage space on your iphone.
It's a great book . All who shoot for Iphone should read it and become familiar with the works of such great photographers for its development and the search path.
