This story has been read so many times, I've lost count. It's not one I would have guessed to be so popular, but I think it is one of the books that got my youngest granddaughter excited about reading. She's not real patient and can't sit still for a minute. But, Orangey had her glued to this book. Maybe it's the simplicity of the illustrations which are genius. They're cartoonish in a 1950s style, charcoal line drawings with a splash of color on the characters. Maybe that's the secret appeal. I never figured it out, but does it matter if it makes a child love to read?

Orangey the Goldfish, Book 1
Colorful children's book about a bright orange goldfish. Little boy, Billy has promised to take care of his new goldfish. The fish is so happy to be in a new home.
He didn't like the bag at all after being bought from the store.
Too funny when the boy tastes the fish food to make sure it's gonna be good for the fish!
Other books about Orangey are highlighted at the end.

My first impressions of "Orangey the Goldfish" by Eddie Bee, include intensity of emotions of the characters and animals. The book is very relatable for children. This story connects the readers to the character and it is light-hearted and funny. I enjoyed reading this children book, because it got me excited about reading and it is very adventurous. Literary elements include, easy repetitive words for beginning readers. The book is also somewhat interactive with the reader and humor is used. Design elements include, characters only in the picture and colorful backgrounds and images. Also, humor is used.

This adventurous children's story is about the relationship between a boy named Billy, and his new pet goldfish. As Billy learns how to care for his goldfish, he learns that Orangey can talk. He also loves food. Overall, this is a fun read for not only children, but entire families. It is exciting but also teaches kids the responsibilities of having a pet.

Glad I didn't read it to my daughter

It easily could have been written as an animal cruelty book. There wasn't a good flow to this book. The kid and dad were irresponsible and they are not good examples of pet owners. Felt like I was reading a book written by a fifth grader. Would never read this to my daughter.

I've read this book a few times. I think this story is cute for a beginning reader who likes the comic book style. It has simple word for reading. But, I'm not a huge fan of the story....the treatment of the goldfish doesn't teach responsibility. The boy & the fish seem to be making friends though...but it has an odd ending.

With how much Peanut loves her goldfish & the color orange, I thought this one would be a great one for her. However, neither of us liked it. We gave up on the side story. We definitely won't be reading the rest of the series.

Cute book

It’s a cute book, better for older children reading alone I think as my toddler got a little lost with the comic book style of this book. But he liked it non the less and wanted to read it again.

Nothing more than stupid. My grandsons said so and I agree. I'd have given it a zero star if I could have. I can't even figure out why this was published.

My daughter enjoyed it

It's a pretty basic book. Nothing fancy. Not a fan of the boy eating fish food (reading with a 3 yr old), but it was an ok book.

Orangeys new home

Orangey finds a new home with an energetic but loving new boy. This tale also shows the importance of taking care of your pet and making new friends for life!

Children

Even for a kids book this seems short but its adorable. Billy reminds me of a real child and Orangey is funny as he gets used to his new home.

Not very enthralling

Even for a children's book I found this to be quite boring. It was too simplistic and I don't think it really gives kids the chance to learn anything new.

Incredibly basic

It's like the retelling of an uneventful day. No arc, no conflict, no climax, no lesson. A chore to read to my child.

This book is a story about a boy who goes out on a day with his dad to the pet store where draws interest in a fish. After purchasing the first fish, Billy is filled with joy and over ecstatic, that on his way home he shook his a little fish a bit too much but billy's father began guiding him through the steps of owning a pet. Billy then choose as name for his calling it orangey resembling the orange color in a goldfish so although this book is mainly a picture book it does a good job in incorporating a story with the pictures.

One great note about this book is that is takes on the perspective of the boy billy and the fish so reader get a sense of how may your pet feel? For instance Billy is shown pointing at the fish and the fish has a dialogue saying, "why are you pointing at me," showing the fish is very concerned with the boy. As the two interacted it was very interesting how the two characters understood one another but never spoke to each other.

Lastly, I thought this book would be a great book to introduce to children when there is a lot of violence and students are not understanding each other. For example in the story you can feel the emotion of the fish as reader because the author allows that character to speak as if it was a human and the two bond together.
