Nature made Ash beautiful; Nurture made him a killer!
VICE NEW YORK IN THE 80s...
Nature made Ash Lynx beautiful; nurture made him a cold ruthless killer. A runaway brought up as the adopted heir and sex toy of “Papa” Dino Golzine, Ash, now at the rebellious age of seventeen, forsakes the kingdom held out by the devil who raised him. But the hideous secret that drove Ash's older brother mad in Vietnam has suddenly fallen into Papa's insatiably ambitious hands--and it's exactly the wrong time for Eiji Okamura, a pure-hearted young photographer from Japan, to make Ash Lynx's acquaintance... Epic in scope, and one of the best-selling shojo titles of all time in Japan, Akimi Yoshida put an electric shock into the genre and gained a huge crossover audience through Banana Fish 's stripped-down, non-stop style.
Ash and Dr. Alexis Dawson, the surviving brother of the duo that created Banana Fish , struggle to escape the mental institution where they have been committed against their will. Unbeknownst to Ash, Max and Ibé are also attempting to free him. Ash litters the complex's sterile hallways with the corpses of the guards who try to stop him. Then Blanca, a mysterious new character with a link to Ash's past, emerges, and Dino hires him to get Ash.
Akimi Yoshida (Japanese: 吉田秋生, Yoshida Akimi) is a Japanese cartoonist from Tokyo, best known for her manga series Banana Fish. Yoshida studied at the Musashino Art University in Tokyo and made her professional debut in 1977. Despite serialising her works in shōjo manga (girls' comics) magazines, most notably in 'Bessatsu Shōjo Comic' and 'Monthly Flowers', during the 80's she developed a visual style akin to the aesthetics of shōnen manga (boy's comics) of that era, contributing significantly to creating a bridge between these two traditions. This is particularly evident in her international best-seller Banana Fish (1985-1994), a thriller set in New York City blending action and homoerotic romance. Among her other major works are the series Yasha (1996-2002) and Umimachi Diary (2006-2018). Yoshida's comics have received a number of accolades in Japan, including three Shogakukan Manga Awards (1983 and 2001 in the category 'shojo', 2015 in the general category), an Excellence Award for manga at the Japan Media Arts Festival (2007) and the 6th Manga Taishō award (2013).
THEY HUGGED!!! That one hug was enough to make my entire day.
"If you went home, I'd probably end up worrying if something happened to you. It's better you're right here, where I can keep an eye on you." (Ash, honey, just admit that you don't wanna let him go)
Are you ready for Die Hard: Banana Fish Style Part 2? Cuz it didn't get all wrapped up in the last volume. I love the irritation that Ash has when he realizes he has to rescue the idiots who were trying to rescue him. Priceless. And there's the reunion between Ash & Eiji - aww, aren't they adorable? So, we've passed the midway point so it seems like the story should be building toward some serious climaxes, but there are still new characters being introduced and more background being developed. Clearly, this opera isn't going to be over until the fat man sings his swan song (sorry, I just couldn't resist).
This volume includes the second half of Ash's escape from the hospital, reuniting with Eiji, and then lots of exposition. There's also the introduction of a new villain. And just some really lovely quiet moments.
Last day of break, so I’m spending the day reading and relaxing.
This volume sets us up for the final arc in the series. The author is juggling a lot at this point, but if you’ve made it this far, you’re in it for the long haul and you’ve invested enough in the characters to care about what will happen to all of them.
Most of the folks have chosen their sides, but we have one toss up which keeps the what if factor in play.
The one thing that I realize while reading this volume is that normally I hate “perfect” characters, characters that are perfect looking and abnormally smart. But I don’t mind Ash. I think it is because the book doesn’t get bogged down with sexual conquest. I think that is my problem with Bond, Golgo 13, and other stories with the perfect specimen characters. So much time is soaked up with these guys stumbling on pussy like some porn parody Byronic hero. It is such a lame trope. The minute you see a woman you know she’s just there to get fucked and disappear or die. Maybe she’ll get saved though. All depends on the whim of the perfect male and his superior judgment 🙄
I know I know, sometimes that doesn’t happen, so the exception forces me into the area of sweeping generalization. That’s bullshit and you know it. If I had a buck for every male narrative where a dude is loyal and perfect in every way, then his lover dies or is kidnapped or turns out evil, allowing him to fuck and kill his way to the world’s salvation, I’d have enough money to buy the rest of the volumes in this series before the end of the year.
This book is almost completely void of women, and it’s fucking awesome. If you don’t know how to create a strong female character, just leave them out of the mix 🤷🏻♀️
I haven’t always followed that advice in my own work, but we’re allowed to grow right?
This will be my last volume for a little bit. I have been blowing too much money lately, and I can’t afford to burn through the last 8 volumes by the end of the year.
“It’s just that so far, I’ve lived my life by trusting my instincts and nothing else. That’s the one thing I was 100% sure of.. and yet— this has never happened to me before. I don’t like it.”
I love how everyone is so highly incompetent and Ash needs to save Max and Ibe who were there to save him! Ash is the mastermind surrounded by a bunch of well-meaning but ultimately thick brained adults. omg Ash needs to know that Eiji is ok. MY HEART VOLUME 11 PAGE 90 AND 91 THEY FUCKING HUGGED. IT TOOK THIS LONG FOR THE GODDAMN BUILD UP TO THEM HUGGING. I CAN'T Yut Lung teaming up with Golzine to not only have him take control of the Union Corse and then in return help in dismantling and killing all the Lee family is the exact revenge he wants. He wants to destroy the Lees with a seemingly outside influence but really is coming in from within the Lee family. Hurting the family who raised him because they killed his mother. Nice plan. But I hope they kill Golzine in the end too. "It's better when you're right here where I can keep an eye on you." Bro Ash the latent homoeroticism is there baby. I was worried there for a sec that Ash had something done to him in the mental hospital that makes him now seem jumpy and hallucinatory. But thank god I was wrong. oooooh, new antagonist!!!
Ash was determined to escape by design of his own making after he recovered from sedation. Lobo and Shunichi went to infiltrate the facility under the guise as reporters. Unfortunately, they don’t know what the hell they’re doing. Much to Ash’s chagrin. He was really pissed. Still, he managed to squirrel away a scientist who’s in a catatonic state thanks to Banana Fish he partly created. Then Ash has to rescue the two from security. The Baron, who was to replace Golzine, tried mightily to get Ash apprehended. Golzine knew that never gonna happen.
Magnetic, exciting, addicting. I love it! To be honest this particular book had me severely stressed out. Being so close to the end of the book series it is easy to tell something bad is going to happen. But what? All the little moments shared between Ash and Eiji have a place in my heart. They’re adorable, so funny! The new character that dropped makes this interesting I can’t wait for a little more background information. I just can’t book these books down!
Solid volume wrapping up the mental hospital arc (fun 80's action movie vibes continued) and setting up the next villain/ Golzine alliance members. Lots of humour and some much needed sweet moments to balance out Yut-Lung spelling out just how unhinged he really is, and Ash's legitimate hunch that he's being followed.
No quiero seguir leyendo.
A lot happened in this volume!! We get to see so many sides of the story in this which makes it very interesting because it keeps you wondering how it’ll all come together. I also loved some of the reunions we saw and also loved some sillier moments between the characters in these sour times.
This volume finalizes the escape and hatches the next set of machinations. Feels like it will be the underworld versus the evil government. Remember this series started in Vietnam, so maybe this is where the trail leads...
3.65 - Average Ash in a nurse outfit is not strange at all. Great to see the gang showing off their skills. Blanca's interest in books makes me like him already.
