Nature made Ash beautiful; Nurture made him a killer!
VICE NEW YORK IN THE 80s...
Nature made Ash Lynx beautiful; nurture made him a cold ruthless killer. A runaway brought up as the adopted heir and sex toy of “Papa” Dino Golzine, Ash, now at the rebellious age of seventeen, forsakes the kingdom held out by the devil who raised him. But the hideous secret that drove Ash's older brother mad in Vietnam has suddenly fallen into Papa's insatiably ambitious hands--and it's exactly the wrong time for Eiji Okamura, a pure-hearted young photographer from Japan, to make Ash Lynx's acquaintance... Epic in scope, and one of the best-selling shojo titles of all time in Japan, Akimi Yoshida put an electric shock into the genre and gained a huge crossover audience through Banana Fish 's stripped-down, non-stop style.
Ash has finally escaped from the mental institution where he was held captive and has brought with him crucial evidence of the proof and power of the drug known as Banana Fish. Golzine has hired Blanca, the man responsible for Ash's training in the fighting arts, to bring Ash "home" at any cost!!
Akimi Yoshida (Japanese: 吉田秋生, Yoshida Akimi) is a Japanese cartoonist from Tokyo, best known for her manga series Banana Fish. Yoshida studied at the Musashino Art University in Tokyo and made her professional debut in 1977. Despite serialising her works in shōjo manga (girls' comics) magazines, most notably in 'Bessatsu Shōjo Comic' and 'Monthly Flowers', during the 80's she developed a visual style akin to the aesthetics of shōnen manga (boy's comics) of that era, contributing significantly to creating a bridge between these two traditions. This is particularly evident in her international best-seller Banana Fish (1985-1994), a thriller set in New York City blending action and homoerotic romance. Among her other major works are the series Yasha (1996-2002) and Umimachi Diary (2006-2018). Yoshida's comics have received a number of accolades in Japan, including three Shogakukan Manga Awards (1983 and 2001 in the category 'shojo', 2015 in the general category), an Excellence Award for manga at the Japan Media Arts Festival (2007) and the 6th Manga Taishō award (2013).
“if anybody hurts you…it’ll be over my dead body. i don’t care who it is. i am not letting anybody hurt you, eiji” “please…don’t hurt him. let him go. please…”
i think i’ve seen this film before…and i didn’t like the ending 🙃
I can't believe how much Ash loves Eiji, every interaction makes me wanna cry, I'm not kidding. I just want them to be save and happy, but I think that's too much to ask for.
"If anybody ever hurts you, it'll be over my dead body—I don't care who it is. I am not letting anybody hurt you, Eiji!" KIIILLLLL MEEEEE!!!!
"Dear God—if you exist, the American god, the Japanese gods, I don't care which. This is for both, please look after him." AND YOU PEOPLE CALL THEM JUST FRIENDS??!!!
"I'm happy, goddammit. I know there's at least one person in this world who cares about me, who doesn't want anything from me. Not once in my entire life—until now. And that's worth more to me than anything else." You think i would read a volume like this one and be chill af and not like THROW THE GODDAMN BOOK AT THE WALL, SCRATCH MY SKIN, CLAW MY HAIR OUT AND SCREAM LIKE A BANSHEE?
Lots of Eiji & Ash scenes in this one. And lots of development on the background of Ash as well. I have to admit though that the whole everyone-controlling-the-underworld-is-a-kid does seem a bit weird, but I don't mind it that much. The story is fast, furious and funny - so I suppose I can deal with all kid gangsters. ;)
first tear of the series and definitely not last. i just can't get over how a over 30 year old manga handles these relationships better than some popular modern media. its so beautiful and important but also very heartbreaking and we are only starting i fear
5/5 stars. This may be my favorite volume so far. Like, the level of emotional distress I reached, is unreal. I entered a whole other dimension I was so upset. That shit hurted, on so many levels. But at the same time, there was quite a lot of development in the plot in this volume. I have so many feelings, so excuse me while I go scream into my pillow for what I’ve just read.
So of course, just as Ash is about to get answers Kippard is killed. Blanca please-
Ash just refusing to wake up was a whole mood. He really fell asleep in a bathtub and while eating. His bedhead lol. Ash not realizing he was the one who ate some of the salad was another whole mood. Can we talk about Eiji making Ash’s favorite food? Because- The subtle detail of Ash telling Eiji to check the door before opening the door. Also, their banters are everything.
Ibe being all worried for Eiji was peak soft. Eiji and Ibe agreeing that they don’t feel fear despite the situation they’re in, protect them.
ITS BEEN A YEAR SINCE EIJI AND IBE WENT TO AMERICA- when did this happen? I’m- Ibe is no longer trying to convince Eiji of returning to Japan, at least not until they see the end of this conspiracy.
Ash begins to suspect that Blanca was the one who killed Kippard and Holstock, two big contributors of Banana Fish and Golzine’s plans.
I actually gasped when Blanca just shanked Eiji on the picture. No, ma’am, no ma’am! We don’t hurt Eiji Okumura in this household, no ma’am!!!
Eiji being able to notice when Ash is acting differently, sue me already.
Ash protecting Eiji from the bullets... really, just end me already. When they shot and almost got Eiji and Ash ran up to him and was like “You okay? Did you get hit?”
Eiji getting shot, listen Blanca you keep those dirty dusty bullets AWAY FROM MY BOI! Ash literally covered him with his whole body I- Now Ash knows Blanca’s target isn’t himself, it’s Eiji. Also, idk why Yut-Lung has that surprised look on his face, boy as if you don’t know what’s going on. You know perfectly well.
Ash really called Yut-Lung a “slimy evil bastard” lmao. When he told Blanca “I hope your dick falls off.” It made me think of that vine “My dick fell off!” and I can’t stop laughing now.
Yeah why, good question. Why does Yut-Lung hate Eiji? Why did Blanca take the job when he has a soft spot for Ash like- let Ash get a break already, for the love of all that is holy.
Everyone, remember that on page 118 Eiji explicitly suggests Ash come with him to Japan. This is what I’ve been saying since the beginning of this manga, probably volume 3 or so. Eiji telling Ash that there’s no guns in Japan, that he wants to show him his country. Ash saying he can’t do anything besides kill people- STOP! Ash getting triggered by the idea of modeling again- STOP IT!
They’re so soft, please just keep them safe. The looks on their faces as they talked about what’s in Japan. And Eiji fixes Ash’s pronunciation. Why am I about to CRY?
“I wish I could go.” “Well, I really want to take you.”
YALL SHOULDA JUST DIPPED YESTERDAY
I would take a bullet for Ash and Eiji so they could go to Japan together. I will work and buy their plane tickets myself. Damn, I will be their bodyguard.
“...over my dead body. If anybody hurts you it’ll be over my dead body. I don’t care who it is. I am not letting anybody hurt you, Eiji.”
He really got up in the middle of the night, saw him sleeping and thought all of this. Aslan Jade Callenresse how dare you drop down on his bed like that? I’m in pain.
When Eiji just knows when Ash is lying to him. The emotional connection, y’all-
“You probably don’t realize this, but when you lie, you become dead-calm. You stop swearing and joking around. You’re hiding something from me, something really serious.”
Eiji you can stop attacking me emotionally-
“Dear God- if you exist, the American God, the Japanese Gods, I don’t care which. This is for both, please look after him. Please...”
Ash does exactly this later on, BOYS STOP!
Eiji friendzoned him he said, Dear god, take care of my friend. And Ash is like, I WOULD DIE FOR YOU OMG YOU ARE MY PRIORITY.
Every time, every single time Ash is like: just kill me y’all. I lowkey agree because, for the millionth time, IT WOULD'VE HURT LESS!
When Yut-Lung offered him the gun, and said they’d leave Eiji alone if he shot himself, AND ASH JUST LIFTED THE GUN AND PULLED THE TRIGGER WITHOUT HESITATION WTF! I CANT! DID YALL SEE THAT? Yut-Lung was somehow shocked that Ash was actually going to do it I- why is Yut-Lung so shocked? Bitch, some people are loyal and care about others, don’t act surprised. Did y’all see the blank stare in Ash’s eyes as he pulled the trigger? Literally a blank stare- He really did that! Ash is THAT bitch. Ugh.
When Blanca said:
“You’re not connecting, and you never will...”
PERIOD BLANCA, PERIOD
I am so mad at Yut-Lung. BOY, I WILL PULL YOU BY YOUR OWN BRAID IF YOU DONT LEAVE ASH TF ALONE. How dare you, first of all, coerce him into following all your orders on the condition that Eiji will be safe. And also, how dare you return him to Golzine, what’s your problem, bro? What did Ash ever do to you? He’s such a sNAKE. And for his information, Eiji would NEVER forget that kind of sacrifice. Every time Yut-Lung makes that dumbass shocked face it makes me scream, WHY ARE YOU ACTING SURPRISED? It’s not like he doesn’t know Ash would sacrifice everything for Eiji. Ash loves that boi periodt, so maybe connect the dots Yut-Lung, since you’re such a smart-ass in literally everything else.
Ash calling Blanca a “beefhead meathead” period.
“What you want isn’t possible.” Thanks for reminding us, Blanca. It’s not like I wasn’t aware and furiously denying this.
Ash going off on Blanca saying:
“Just leave me alone, I’m happy goddamnit. Do you have any idea what that’s like? I never did. Not once in my entire life- until now. I know there’s at least one person in the world who cares about me. Who doesn’t want anything from me. And that’s worth more to me than anything.”
ASH YOU DESERVE IT OMFG. This shit hurted. I’m about to cry in the club. Especially now, because Ash asked one thing of Blanca:
“Don't kill him. Please, don’t hurt him. Let him go, please Blanca.”
Damn it, stop y’all. That hurted, just leave Ash alone already. I wanna just quit at this point, this is hurting too much. But I’m in it to win it. Except not at all because I WILL lose.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
So this new guy.... Blanca..... he's killing off all the government people so that Ash doesn't get to figure out who's allowing for all of this to happen. I bet the President or Vice President is all behind this. WAIT WHAT!!?!?!? IT'S BEEN A YEAR SINCE THIS SHIT STARTED!?!?? WHAT!?!?? Ok ok ok. Wait. So Blanca is the one who taught Ash all he knows about shooting and defense and Blanca's target is Eiji because of Yut Lung wanting Eiji dead because he's Ash's weakness and he'll do anything to keep Eiji safe and Golzine is just here in the backseat for a ride through all this. Blanca wants to test Ash and see how far Ash is willing to go and willing to deal with for Eiji's safety. uwuwuwuwuwuwuw Eiji wanting Ash to go to Japan with him after this is all over - and then it cuts to Ash looking at Eiji sleeping and saying "If anybody hurts you, it'll be over my dead body. I don't care who it is. I am not letting anybody hurt you, Eiji!" OH MY FUCKING HEART. Eiji knowing Ash so well and how Ash is when he lies.... oh my god. I can't any more of these Ash/Eiji moments. MY FUCKING HEART. "I'm happy... I know there's at least one person in this world .. who cares about me. Who doesn't want anything from me. Not once in my entire life until now. And that's worth more to me than anything else." I'm crying. oh god, I'm crying. I HATE IT HERE.
Blanca’s involvement changes everything. At the beginning of the volume, Ash is at the top of his game, only for us to watch him spiral down into constant anxiety, then fear, as his suspicions are confirmed. Despite what it means for our protagonist, Blanca is cool as hell.
This volume is absolutely a 5/5 – it may be my favorite in the series so far. Yoshida’s depictions of the characters’ expressions is gorgeous. We’re able to gather so much about what they’re thinking and feeling. Hearing from Ash’s mouth what Eiji means to him feels like such an important marker in the series. Unfortunately, that marker is not pointing towards better times.
We get new dimensions with our protagonist all the time.
We see yet more layers of vulnerability here.
I truly don’t understand the appeal of his lover/friend at this point. Never really did. We have a genius who looks like a god according to others in the story, and this very boring, average person who gets in the way all the time and is generally a pain in the ass.
As the story becomes more about our protagonist growing into a self-sacrificing character, I find the appeal diminishing.
I’m not giving up on it though. It still has its merits.
Now, Ash is loose. Back with his own gang, with Eiji by his side. One thinks Eiji is being a foil. But, Ash is concerned about him. He’s sensed he’s being followed. Plus, he almost had the senator talking. The senator who had the financial backing for Banana Fish project. But, the senator got plugged. So’s the colonel who conveniently got killed in an accident. So, Golzine’s the one pulling the strings. He called in the professional hit man, Blanca.
I felt that the balance in this volume wasn't as good as the others. I am also a little tired of cat and mouse. There does seem to be some more mystery but sometimes it would be nice to see something out in the open.
I think that this story is strong enough to not rely on discovery and twists. I would like to see a bit more development at this stage in the game. I want to have a great payoff by the end. But maybe I just missed something in this volume that will come together later.
Ash 😭
“I’m happy goddamit. I know there’s at least one person in this world… who cares about me. Who doesn’t want anything from me. Do you have any idea what that’s like? I never did… not once in my life until now. And that’s worth more to me than anything else.”
"I know there's at least one person in this world who cares about me, who doesn't want anything from me. Do you have any idea what that's like? I never did.. Not once in my entire life--until now. And that's worth more to me than anything else."
3.90 - Good Blanca is growing on me. Ash in the rain is the best. How is Eiji good at observing and understanding Ash when they've known each other for less than a year? I'm impressed and scared that Ash was able to fire the gun without hesitation.
What the heck?! The emotions in this volume hit me hard. The conversation between Ash and Eiji, where they talked about visiting Japan together and Ash professing his undying love to Eiji, had me thinking about crying in the club. It feels like the conclusion is coming, and it will hurt, but there are still quite a few more volumes left. 4.5/5 rounded up to five on Goodreads
"I know there's at least one person in the world who /cares/ about me. who doesn't /want/ anything from me. do you have any idea what that's like? I never did... not once in my entire life, until now. and that's worth more to me than anything else."
