Cabin Pressure is set in the wing and a prayer world of a tiny, one-plane charter airline; staffed by two pilots, one on his way down, and one who was never up to start with. Whether flying a nervous bassoonist to Gdansk or a horrible sister to Helsinki, no job is too small, but many, many jobs are too difficult.
Carolyn Knapp-Shappey, MJN Air's formidable boss, has employed two of the very cheapest pilots money can buy: Captain Martin Crieff, who's always wanted to fly and won't let a little thing like lack of ability stop him, and First Officer Douglas Richardson, smooth-voiced old sky god and eternal schemer. Passenger service is provided by the relentlessly cheery Arthur, proud inventor of both Surprising Rice and his own hat.
Written by John Finnemore (John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme, The Now Show), Cabin Pressure stars Stephanie Cole as Carolyn, Benedict Cumberbatch as Martin, Roger Allam as Douglas and John Finnemore as Arthur.
John David Finnemore (born 28 September 1977) is a British comedy writer and actor. He wrote and performs in the radio series Cabin Pressure, John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme, and John Finnemore's Double Acts, and frequently features in other BBC Radio 4 comedy shows such as The Now Show.
Absolutely hilarious. Such good fun and each story has made me laugh, especially the christmas one.
Carolyn is such a great character and Douglas gives me strong Braxiatel vibes its uncanny. I love his and Martin's relationship dynamics and Arthur is very sweet.
I loved this series as much as the first! Ipswich was probably my favourite episode where the crew go for training, and such amusing scenerios are played out like Douglas being introduced to a technique of getting over his paralysing fear of criticising the captain!
Although I did love the scene in Kuala Lampur too, where Douglas stands up to his mum during her test of his stewarding skills. It was so good, I skipped back straight away so I could hear it again!
Hmm, I could be here all day picking great scenes out of all the episodes so I will end by saying, if you've not experienced Cabin Pressure yet, what are you waiting for?!
British radio sitcom released on Audible. I love Stephanie Cole in other British tv sitcoms so was looking forward to listening to this. I laughed and loved the hilarious season #1 and immediately bought all the other Cabin Pressure series' and anything else done by John Finnemore. This Cabin Pressure radio sitcom is fairly clean for a secular program but I've since discovered that other things done by John Finnemore can be rather unwholesome, tasteless and offensive so I've deleted his other programs off my audible. But the ensemble cast of this Cabin Pressure series is great together and I wish they'd done more than 4 years worth of hilarious programs.
Cabin Pressure is a delight. The cast fit together perfectly: Benedict Cumberbatch as the anxious, hapless, not-yet-failed captain; Roger Allam as the older, more talented and far more distinguished co-pilot; Stephanie Cole as the fearsome airline owner, who won't tolerate the foolish men messing it all up; and John Finnemore (the writer) as her bumbling son Arthur, the steward.
I could happily listen to them for hours; I have done, and they're hours full of laughter and camaraderie. Heartily recommended.
John Finnemore is a genius and never fails to make me laugh and feel better. I listen to Cabin Pressure and J. F.'s Souvenir Programme whenever I need to cheer myself up or distract myself from problems. It doesn't matter how many times I listen to this, I still can't suppress the laughter. Thank you John.
Zany genius sparkles around characters with depth and classic storytelling. Who would have thought the tribulations of a tiny airline (four on the payroll) could be so fun? I know it’s not a book or actual poetry, but, well, it’s as good as.
These are so fun. I'm getting more attached to the characters- would definitely enjoy being on a plane with them. We listened on a road trip and adults and kids both enjoyed greatly.
In my review for Series 1 of Cabin Pressure, I focused on an overview of the plot (and characters) for new listeners. However, as anyone checking into Series 2 has (hopefully) already enjoyed Series 1, I will instead jump straight into the most important question:
Does Series 2 avoid the sophomore slump and live up to its predecessor's breakout success?
The answer is a resounding YES. The writing is sharper, the actors more comfortable in their roles, and subsequently, the laughs are even more frequent. Series 2 has moments that will go down as some of my favorites in any comedy show, radio or television.
This time around we join our favorite 'AirDot' as they showcase karate skills (and lose to children), bet an entire cheese tray on Passenger Derby (Harry Potter's gran!), strafe a child's birthday party with boiled candy, listen to Arthur's attempt at lying ('How do people do it? It's impossible!') and more.
But I think what I appreciate most about Series 2 is how much character development writer John Finnemore manages to squeeze in between all of the humor and absurdity. There are moments in this series that are quite touching, and by the end, you will realize how much you truly love all four of these amazing characters.
Cabin Pressure continues to be an absolute joy to listen to. Bring on Series 3!
Continuing the same high standards set in the first series, Cabin Pressure Season 2 is another laugh filled romp in the friendly skies. As the pilots continue their alphabetical journeys around the globe this delightful radio produced sit-com will have you laughing in the airplane isles.
This is another wonderful example of the writing genius of John Finnemore which is high lighted by the cast: Stephanie Cole, Roger Allam, Benedict Cumberbatch and of course, John Finnemore as Arthur. The crisp, fault free recording allows the listener to laugh along with the live audience at the antics of this wonderful airdot. (An airline with only one plane is not a line, it is a dot... or so we are told).
Do yourself a favor. If you have not had occasion to listen to this witty production, take the time grab a copy. You will become a convert, I am sure of it!
