A gross and fairly stupid western about wooden, nasty characters out for information from and/or revenge on each other after the diamond from a jewel heist goes missing.

Bouncer Vol. 1 A Diamond For The Beyond is written by Alexandro Jodorowsky and art by Francois Boucq.

Set in the American West in the late 19th century, three brothers have let a rare diamond destroy their relationship, their families, and their bodies. The Bouncer is the youngest brother who, now one-armed, guards a saloon when his never-before-met young nephew arrives. His father has been killed by his notorious third brother in search of the diamond. The Bouncer will now teach his nephew the way of the gun in order for him avenge his family's murder.

The first book was a lot of the set-up for the story and establishing the main characters of the book. When I first read it I thought it was good, but didn't have much further thoughts. But as I let the book sit in my mind, I enjoyed it even more. The art landscapes are absolutely beautiful though some of the characters are hard to distinguish. Very excited to see how this book progresses.

As with everything Humanoids publishes, the art in Bouncer is stellar. François Boucq creates memorable characters while absolutely convincing me that they live in the American West. The story is dark and Leone-inspired; all awful villains and a young man's revenge, but the Bouncer character is cool since he's connected to the shenanigans, but enough of an outsider to have a level perspective on them. Will definitely read more.

Continuing my journey into the 'jodoverse', still within the old west theme.

I expected the best and I got the best.

A good, well structured story, telling the origin of the character know as Bouncer. Including how he lost his right arm.

Couldn't be any better.

This was a great introduction to the revered Jodorowsky. As someone who loves westerns, this contained everything I wanted. A gritty tone, vicious violence, and a strong sense of restlessness to the characters and setting all contribute to a great issue.

This issue does a good job of establishing a solid foundation. The characters are connected through the pursuit of revenge, either being a victim of it or seeking it. Revenge is a classic western trope and I look forward to seeing how it informs the characters over the course of the series.

A pretty basic outline of the protagonist and the Bouncer are set with there being a lot of potential for both characters to grow in the subsequent issues. The antagonist, Ralton, is the most fully formed in this first issue. He's an immensely despicable character - a virulent racist, plunderer, and murderer who seemingly has no boundaries. He's hateable but appropriately reflects the harshness of the well realized setting. The violence is callous and frequent and there's a real sense of volatility to the characters' interactions.

The art is complementary to the tone of the issue. Characters are ugly but drawn well, with very expressive faces and distinct appearances. Movements and actions are straightforward and it's easy to follow what's happening within a panel. The environments feel loved in and overall it was a very immersive read.

I will definitely be checking out the subsequent issues. And look eager to participate in this Western journey.

Currently available on Kindle Unlimited, this is the first volume of an archetypal spaghetti western (which were mostly made in Spain rather than Italy, as was this graphic novel) with all the violence, immorality, venality, racism, and misogyny turned up to eleven.

It was the art by Boucq which drew my attention. He is a formidable artist, creator of cinematic action, extremely dynamic visual storytelling, and breathtaking backgrounds. He did not disappoint. His work here is simply amazing. That made this book worth the read.

I expected the story by Jodorowsky to be visceral and deliberately shocking, as that increasingly seems to be his stock in trade, and he did not … erm … disappoint either. This story is full of violence, with murder, rape, torture, prostitution, theft, and vengeance in every scene. It’s quite disturbing, definitely a video nasty. Not one character has any redeeming qualities.

I suppose there is an element of reality in all the depravity, as the Wild West was truly a lawless land and time. But this tale fetishises the barbarism in the name of entertainment. It leaves an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Nevertheless there is a compelling element to something this brazen.

Feios, porcos e maus.

This story was bloody and disgusting. Bad people doing bad things which don't get me wrong, can be entertaining. I'm not reading books to learn morals. However, It's difficult to start off a book with confederate soldiers and all their atrocities (clearly the villain but it was a good chunk of the book). Somehow, it gets worse from there. The protagonists were unappealing and boring. The portrayal of women was uninspired, you've got the wife, the whore, and the hag in two whole women!

I don't often regret reading books but this felt like a waste of time. Maybe this genre just isn't for me.

A good but extremely dark Western about three brothers who have let a diamond come between them. This thing abounds with trigger warnings so be aware. European comics have a much more relaxed attitude towards rape and violence towards women in general. I don't really care if it was a product of the times. I can go with it being inferred instead of shown. That being said, the story of 3 brothers and a nephew all searching for this diamond is an intriguing one.

Boucq’s western landscapes look really nice in a familiar euro style, and his faces are lumpy and horribly distinctive. I was less taken with Jodo’s story, a post-Civil War story about ex-Confederate scoundrels committing atrocities as they hunt down a lost treasure from their family. The exploitation genre depravity might not be any worse than something like Inglorious Bastards, but there’s also a lack of humor to it and I found those frequent bits more off-putting than entertaining.

I don't really like the comic's style. The story is just okay, it feels a bit weird, like they're trying to bring today's hypermoralistic views into play, which just doesn't fit into the wild west scenario. at all!

Re-reading this whole series, in order to fully appreciate, and review, the last volume, which was just recently published in Swedish. This is a traditional Jodorowsky story, set in the Wild West of the late 19th century, with a positively Shakespearian family feud, where just about everyone is out to kill each other, in order to get to the riches that lay hidden. Most of the element here are clichés, like the boy seeing his parents killed, vowing to get revenge, and in order to achieve this, getting trained in the art of war by an older master. The one fact that sticks out is that the old master in this case is missing an arm, which is ironic for a gunslinger and probably symbolic in some way, Things usually are in a Jodorowsky story.

I'm in two minds about this series. On the one hand I love the art by Boucq, which I hold as better than that of the old master Jean Giarud, of Blueberry fame. I find Boucq's art more personal and not so clean, perfect but also cold as Giraud's art could sometimes be.

On the other hand, the script by Jodorowsky is just as chauvinistic as his scripts always are. The men are hard and gritty and the women are there to be raped and killed. True, there is a character probably inspired by Ma Baker, who is tough and resilient, leading her three sons to a life of crime. But she is also killed, in order to let the otherwise all-male cast get their narrative priorities straight...

Oh well, on to volume two!

No habia leido nada de Jodorowsky, pero al ver el documental JODOROWSKY DUNE´S (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cySmz... ), me invadierón unas ganas inmensas de leer algo de este tipo, que puede o ser un genio o un charlatan, o una mezcla de las dos, pero el Colombia es difícil encontrar obras de su trabajo en comic, así que no dude en devorar este primer tomo de BOUNCER, un Western en toda regla, en donde encontramos a un grupo de 3 hermanos , que viven en el filo de la cordura y las balas.En este volumen, encontramos a Bouncer,quien le cuenta a su sobrino los crueles origenes de su familia, como se forjarón en sangre y polvo, cada vez desquiciándose mas y mas ( la mama es un PERSONAJE !!! ) de manera infernal, acá hay balas y cuchillos de todos y para todos, de manera realista y sanguiolinea, además es un placer encontrar un artista del que no conocia nada ,el genial Boucq , que es de un detalle altísimo sin sacrificar el storytelling, mezclando todo en unos diseños de pagina audaces ,clásicos y excelentemente construidos.Si es tanta maravilla, ¿porque le doy solo 4 estrellas?, porque deja en el cuerpo un dolor saber que faltan muchos tomos para saber que pasara con la historia, lo cual me lleva a pensar seriamente en comprar ese tomo recopilatorio que esta en la libreria Nacional.}
