James Dean is the original creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat. He is a self-taught artist originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. His passion for drawing became apparent at a young age, and as a child, you could find James drawing his favorite characters like Snoopy and Yogi Bear.
James earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and went on to work for Georgia Power for a number of years. Eventually, he was called to pursue his art full- time and began selling his work at art festivals around the Southeast. It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since.
James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006, and he illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time. James is humbled every day by the success that this groovy blue cat has brought him. He says positively affecting children’s lives is his number one priority, and he is grateful to have such an amazing audience to work for.
Pete!!! :) Pete the Cat discovers just how cool Valentine’s Day is with a little help from his friends and his Mom. Our cool, blue hero sets out to spread the love around.
I will always love Pete’s cute, blue, furry ways, but this visit did not hold the usual bright, brilliant Pete magic for me. The colors, sweet simplicity, and sneakers were all in here, but the tone felt stale to me somehow. I usually want to read a Pete tale again and again, but I just didn’t feel that re-read love and magic with this story.
Still a fun read about the heart-happy day of the year that urges us all to tell the people around us how much we care.
My 8 year old recently borrowed this book for our local library.
In this installment of Pete the Cat, Pete learns that Valentine's Day is cool. The story starts the day before Valentine's Day. Pete runs into his friend Callie. She asks him if he has finished his Valentine's card yet. Pete says he hasn't because Valentine's is not cool. Callie explains to him that Valentine's Day is the day that we tell people how special they are to use. Pete heads home, and thinks about what Callie told him. By the end of next day, Pete figures out that Valentine's Day is cool.
My 8 year old really enjoyed this story. The text was easy for him to read and understand. Contains colorful illustrations throughout the book. We will be reading more of Pete the Cat.
In last two days, I have read nine (yep 9) Pete the Cat books. These books are perfect for grands and great-grands to read to young children. The underlying value system seems to be of some cool cats, 1960s-70s style. The color scheme fits in with the the cool cat theme--mostly cool colors with warm undertones. The warm undertones are emotionally attractive.
This book concerns itself with everyday love expressed on Valentine's Day.
Lovely and well written picture book about Pete the Cat and his friend Callie planning to make cards for Valentine’s Day. Pete forgets a couple of people but he catches up. I read the read aloud book. The narration is just perfect. Love it.
This is a wonderful book for all kids about Valentine's Day and about friendship! It teaches children that our presence is a better gift than even a card!
Each of Pete's friends who is a boy gets a personalized card about something they like or are good at (guitar, soccer, football etc) and the girls get... hearts? Disappointing.
Pete is kind to all the people in his life by making homemade valentines (not store-bought junk). He realizes that everyone likes to be recognized for doing their part. We love Pete! 5 stars
I really need to read more Pete The Cat. I really do love Pete The Cat. The only problem I have with this Pete the Cat is Callie is the other characters name. Callie is such a hard name for beginner readers. I think readers need to read difficult names but Callie is a really hard one. It is confusing for an early reader. I tried to explain callie vs. "call" ie and it was certainly a struggle. I just think when writing for early readers that is something to pay attention to. (I know it is super picky and an unneeded criticism.)
Pete the Cat: Valentine's Day is Cool is a great book to use with younger readers. I enjoy how the book uses quotes to make up the story. I think it is a great book for parents to read aloud to their children and to talk about the true meaning behind the quotes.
As a teacher, I think it is a great book to have in a classroom library or to read aloud around Valentine's Day.
Simple Book about Valentine's Day. Helped my boys understand that they should appreciate all people that are in their lives. They can also simply appreciate someone by showing them what makes them unique.
I watched this as a read-along/audiobook on YouTube.
Pete isn't very into Valentine's day until his mother gives him some good advice that changes how he makes Valentine's cards for his friends. After that, he feels like everyone deserves a card.
Kids really love Pete the Cat books. This one was really good. Pete the Cat thinks Valentine's Day isn't cool, but Callie his friend tells him it is. He makes Valentine's for all his friends because his mom tells him there's something cool about every cat! This is a fun book about Valentine's Day!
Another great book, Pete thinks Valentine isn't cool until his friend reminds him of the thought behind it. Showing how much you like you friends and family. Great story and pics.
I liked how this book talked about showing love to everyone. Pete’s mom to the crossing guard. But the most important lesson isn’t to make stuff and give gifts but to spend time with people you live, like your friends. Definitely a super cute book.

I loved this cute little story about Pete and Valentine's Day. The illustrations are cute and the stickers and cards included in the book are an added bonus.
I have to say I loved this because I loved the simple message that expressing your love or thanks can make a huge impact and basically costs you nothing.
This book is great to teach about Valentine's day. The pictures are vivid and attractive and more importantly, the story was very interesting. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.
This was a nice read. Pete the Cat is always a win. The message is sweet that Valentine's Day is just a good day to tell people how special they are to you.
This month I read Pete the Cat: Valentine's Day Is Cool by Kimberly and James Dean. I chose this book because Valentine's Day is a great time to celebrate love and friendship, and I thought Pete would give us a great version of his story. This book follows Pete, a groovy cat who usually thinks Valentine's Day isn’t cool until he realizes that it is actually a great opportunity to show people how much he cares about them. With the help of Callie, one of his friends, Pete wants to make Valentine's cards for all the special people in his life. He goes through his list, making sure he doesn’t forget anyone, but just as he thinks he is done, he realizes he forgot someone really important. Pete has to come up with a quick and creative solution to fix his mistake. One thing I liked about this book is how Pete learns to appreciate something he didn't think was important at first. It shows that sometimes you don’t realize how special something is until you take the time to think about it. A lesson people can take away from this book is that showing appreciation for others doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as a thoughtful card or a kind word. I would recommend this book to young readers who enjoy fun, lighthearted stories about friendship. The pictures and vocabulary make it an easy and enjoyable read for all ages. Overall, I would rate this book an 8/10 because I liked the message and the way Pete learns an important lesson in a fun way. Once again... till next month!
Pete the Cat Valentine's Day is Cool By Kimberly and James Dean 3⭐️ Children's Picture Books Format:Hardcover Ages: K-2 📚📚📚📚 Read this for storytime on Saturday. Honestly, Pete the Cat is not my jam. This book had posters, stickers, and Valentine's cards your kids can pass out. The overall story is that Pete the Cat doesn't think Valentine's Day is cool, and then his friend Callie tells him why it is cool. Then he wants to write Valentine's for everyone. This book is a good reminder to kids that you can show grattitude and love to all the people who help you throughout your day, like your bus driver, teacher, and crossing guard.
